A US woman was duped into buying artificial jewellery worth ₹ 300 for a whopping ₹ 6 crore by a jeweller father-son duo in Jaipur, Rajasthan. According to the police, Cherish, who is an American citizen, had met the owner Gaurav Soni of a jewellery shop called Rama Radium in Jaipur’s Johri Bazaar through Instagram in 2022. Over the past two years, she paid Rs 6 crore for what she believed were genuine ornaments.At the time of purchase, the seller also provided a hallmark certificate to the woman, which showed the purity of the jewellery. Cherish then went back to the US. In April 2024, she put the jewellery on display at an exhibition, where she found that it was a fake and that its value was about ₹300. She returned to Jaipur and visited the jeweller's shop, Rama Radium, and complained about the fake jewellery to the shop owner, Gaurav Soni. She also sent the jewellery to other shops to check its purity, which, after tests, also confirmed that the jewellery was fake. The shop owners dismissed her allegations and so on 18th May 2024, Cherish filed an FIR in Jaipur against jeweller Rajendra Soni and his son Gaurav Soni. She also sought help from the US embassy, which has urged the Jaipur Police to investigate the matter. Cherish said, "Gaurav Soni and his father have been systematically cheating me in jewellery. They have been shipping me nine-carat instead of 14-carat. They have been shipping me entirely moonstone instead of natural diamond. It's not just me, it's about 10 other designers who are impacted by him and his fraud. He included fake certificates... Just nothing is real."
Jaipur Police's DCP Bajrang Singh Shekhawat said, "During the investigation, the police sent the jewellery for testing. The results showed that the diamonds in it were moonstones and the gold content in the jewellery, which should have been 14 carats, was only two carats.” He added, “The accused jewellers had also filed a complaint alleging that the woman fled with jewellery from their shop. But when we checked the CCTV footage, it turned out to be false. The accused jewellers are on the run. A lookout notice has also been issued against them. We have arrested one Nandkishore, who issued fake hallmark certificates. Special teams have been formed to trace the two men.” After the complaint by Cherish, police also received several other complaints, alleging fraud worth crores by Gaurav Soni and Rajendra Soni and police are investigating them as well.
