Released over 5 years ago.. This WW2 US Military Tractor was in their range for a very short time. Its become a rare kit to collect too... It had a military and a brilliant Civilian scheme as an option.. But its not an Airfix Tooling or even Academy.. I made this a few years ago and found what looked initially to be a fairly simple kit a bit more complicated to build than I was expecting. But worth the effort and I was well pleased with the civilian version which I put in a farmyard vignette setting with lots of detailing and scratch building. Worth getting if you like quirky and non-mainstream models, but do read the instructions carefully!

On the 2 pedals: One is a brake one is the clutch. I drove one for my counties road dept. It had a spinning brush on the front and counter weight on the back. Was a road broom in that configuration. 😊

so it wasn't a split brake on the right foot? left pedal for the left rear wheel and right was right wheel? then a catch that joined them together to operate them at the same time... every tractor i've driven were like that.. you wouldn't have the clutch and brake pedal on the same side matey.. clutch was on the left side and accelerator was a stick on the dashboard...

Case VAI and civilian (factory) colour is orange, with a metallic grey on the rear wheel outer rim and not yellow. plus there must be three thin black horizontal stripes on the bonnet next to the ''CASE"lettering , wich are not given on the decal sheet.

That kit looks like a fun build. Great for dioramas too. Revell makes a 1/24 scale 1952 -56 Porshe Junior 108 diesel farm tractor.

It’s a Case model VAI. The I stands-for the industrial version of the VA model.. Most civilians industrial tractors are painted yellow. Case painted they farm tractors orange in those days

Apart from the Airfix logos strategically placed you can definitely see it's not genuine Airfix. It does look like a nice model and at least it's a relatively new mould.

@flitsertheo yes They were manufactured in Korea by academy but the tooling was designed by airfix so its their tooling.. Academy will never release them as they dont own the tooling.. Ferret was manufactured in india but again the tooling was designed and owned by airfix. The cromwell is the same.

If is in Airfix plastic it should be better than Thunder Models. Also, for an ex Thunder Models kit I am surprised it is only a Skill level 3! Most of the Thunder kits I have done would be about a 7 on that scale. 🤣 Only kit that nearly had me in tears was one of theirs (Thunder Models).

This one builds quite easily, but it is fiddly. I alos had issues with a Thunder Models Artillery tractor, still not sure whether it was the fault of the kit, the plastic, or myself...

I had built their tank transporter which was fun but buildable so when the Thunder Morris Bofors was released I got that. I did finish it but just don't look underneath! It isn't unbuildable but I think many people would give up. Probably should try the Airfix one for a laugh.

Thats how we review kits.. we look at the details and decals.. how the build goes together in the instructions.. if you want to see it build you look at full build videos

Old molds never die , they just get passed along , Frog , Renwal and more reappear under other makers , then there are the limited run remakes Polar Lights etc ?

I don't mind old kits being re-released, especially if it's the only model kit of that subject as long as they mention this is old stuff such as the Airfix Classics and don't pretend it's a new kit such as half of the Revell kits.

May not be tooled by Airfix but it is, you can tell by the box where it says AIRFIX. Tamiya do the same with Italeri as do many many other companies, many updating or adding certain sprues or an etch set.

@@flitsertheo If Airfix have bought the tooling or rights then they are under no obligation too. Why advertise another manufacturer when they have paid. I run a figure company and although I release new pieces unique to myself I also carry those previously released by other companies as I own the masters.I only ever sell under my name as I alone own the rights.

Mos does say in the video that it doesn't. My guess is that the tyre manufacturer still exists (G or P) so Thunder (and later Airfix) dodged the IP fees by not naming them. I'm trying to think now of /any/ models that name tyre manufacturers that still exist.. I can't think of any.

Nothing new about Airfix rebranding other manufacturers' kits under their name, they been at it since the 1970's. 1/35th vehicles originally from Max were released about 50 years ago, and in the 90's a load of 1/48th ex-Otaki aircraft hit the shelves.

This looks amazing, truly, but it's a shame that it's to 1/35. Thunder Models should have really offered this to 1/32, and then, eventually, to 1/48. (Do Border Models offer any US a/c subjects presently?) This kit would be perfect, then. I know that's a little pedantic on my part, but hey, ho, just mo. Why nobody has done a Cle-Trac tug yet is beyond me. (That's the tractor that comes with Monogram's classic B-24D/J Liberator.) They've got one, or did have, at Duxford, so no excuse, Airfix. Come on. Great review as always, Mos.👍

as it was military i guess they went for 1/35.. thunder models have often mixed up the 1/32 and 1/35 scales with the same kit before now lol

When US military tractors were shipped to the UK they originally were fitted with ribbed tires similar to the front. However it was soon realised that thanks to the good old British weather and sort ground on British airfields the would easily get bogged down, the solution came when local farmers came to pull them out using our so called "inferior" smaller underpowered tractors fitted with agricultural tires. So the Americans embarrassingly admitted defeat and quickly changed to agricultural tires. I hope this information is of use to you. 😁

Small detail Mos. In the video title you said it's not Airfix.. err yes it is. Did you mean 'it's not an aircraft' or that the original tooling wasn't Airfix? Good to see external frames on the sprues so fragile parts don't get damaged. Unusual subject so looks like a fun build.. :) BTW with vehicle parts if I'm not sure I just call it 'part of the suspension / drive train / chassis' etc. Dodges the bullet of naming specific parts :) You mentioned one bit of the instructions was unclear. Do you think Airfix will copy ICM and animate their CAD plans in future, uploading them to You Tube so modellers can see how parts fit together?

@@typhoon2827 Gotcha.. although just to nitpick Mos says it's not Airfix /plastic/.. but it's being sold and branded as Airfix, so unless you know this history of the kit in detail it looks like an Airfix kit.

Why is this even an issue? How long have you been around modelling and doing product reviews!!! Model manufacturers will regularly use generic nomenclature and even obscure brand decals in order to avoid having to pay expensive royalties to the real world companies. Your very own RAF charge royalties for the use of their livery schemes. As for who was the actual manufacturer, using someone else's product molds and releasing it under another's brand, in this case Airfix, is a very common licencing arrangement. Airfix did it with the M3 Stuart Honey, using the Academy M3 Stuart model kit. It was a sprue for sprue copy and then Airfix charged a premium price. At least the likes of Eduard provide additional pieces, such as photo-etch and resin parts when they do it. Airfix are just pure rip-off merchants, charging a premium for kits that, whilst an improvement in some cases, still suffer from the ever reliable Airfix quality issues. 🙄

@@MOS6510Modelsone thing about royalties that may interest you, in the model railway world, manufacturers have to licence every livery they produce (apart from some really old ones). This includes all of the former British rail logos and livery which are owned by the department for transport.
