Wow, what a great race, Joe! Kudos for the fantastic GoPro footage, it's always awesome to watch your races. You're really looking stronger every race, knocking on the door of a big podium soon!!!
This was a GREAT video. SO much better than the 9min recap that @usacycling put together. The footage was amazing. I felt like I was in the race. When your elastic snapped I was like "Noooooo" out loud to the computer. Nice race man!
Joe, this just shows the type of person you are... US Nationals... going all out... 100 miles into the race... you still thought to give that little gesture of thanks to the truck that pulled over to let the group pass 👍👍 (20:10). Amazing how quickly the group split apart in the deep sand section. Great footage. It would be great to see you at BWR British Columbia one of these years.
@@jamesainsworth5711 Thanks James! It was a good day out there and a step in the right direction for me! I’m actually heading out to BWR BC this year! Come say hi if you see me!
Way to not be a pawn in Keegan's game. It benefits the attacker to make the other guy pull through and do work at their pace but not at your own expense. Bravo.
I was confused at that part - I don't know Keegan at all but initially it looked like he was getting annoyed that Joe was seemingly drafting him? That's why he said "Dude, ride!" It sounded kind of snarky but, I also am unfamiliar with race tactics.
Thanks for taking a few minutes to chat after the race. I was riding as support for my friend who won the Para handcycle jersey. Great to see us in your video @ 18:32ish! Again, thanks for being such a decent human and spending a few minutes with us.
@@h18p Yes! I was excited when I saw that I got you guys on camera when I was editing after getting to chat with you at the race! Thank you for watching and saying hi!
Great ride - love the comment to Keegan early on. Reminded me of a road race back in the 80's when I got in a break with some 7-Eleven and 10 Speed Drive guys, I was only a Cat 2, and they told me to pull through and I said it was all I could do to hang on - so they proceeded to take me off the back:). I guess by the looks of it 45's look to be the standard now. What Top Tube bag are you using - and does it work well? Again, thanks for the videos.
@@tonykonvalin9959 thanks Tony, mostly 45’s with some guys on 50’s or mtb tires like Keegan, Dylan, and Chase! It’s the Almsthre too tube bag, I like the inside pockets to help keep my extra go pro batteries organized, then I put some extra gels in it! Only thing I recommend is getting their rubber straps, the Velcro is more seamless but it wears on your bib shorts. I also have it screwed in to my bike, but i put my phone in it for training and the extra strap helps keep it stable! I am thinking of switching to the bag that goes under the top tube though, more aero and out of the way and I believe it has two separate side pockets so I can keep fresh batteries in one side and used in the other
@@jgoettl2.0 - Thanks, yes I have a small bag with velcro and has done a job on at least one pair of short. Getting a new bike I hope in the next year so can get wider tyres as have an 2016 Orbea and can only go up to 40's. I can see the wider tyres being good even on just the deeper gravel and not just the rough stuff . Will look at the bag.
Great ride, Joe!! You proved - once again - that you can be in the battle at the front with the best in the country. Excellent video, and I look forward to watching the recap version. Were you happy with your bike setup? I'm guessing you were rolling Pirelli H 45s, yes?
@@efraer thanks Eric! Yeah I rolled with the Pirelli gravel h’s in 45, no inserts, and felt they were great! I think the mtb tires for sure had advantages in the sand and cross winds so you could ride off the line and get a better draft, but there was also a lot of smooth fast gravel out there that these were perfect on!
Wow J!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 one of your best rides, love the confidence you had on the bike, your positioning was superb. Pity the tank got empty a the worst possible moment! Damn. Otherwise an inspiration ride, you really got involved with some heavy hitters! Again, Well Done. Next year I’m kinda hoping you aim higher. 👍🏻
@@lazlo2511 thanks! It was a good step in the right direction compared to last year, working hard so next year I can have a better shot at making it all the way!
Lamazing race and rythm! For racing in general wath width of tire you will recomend 40? 45? Mixed fr and rear? Inserts? Thanks a lot and keep going with this amazing footage
@@michaelsteven1090 thank you! Yes, Keegan, Tobin, Chase, and Dylan all had mtb tires, most of us were running about 45 including myself. This course I think both had their pros and cons, not 100percent what was faster but the winner had 40 slicks which is pretty crazy, I ran 40’s last year and the 45’s this year were way better!
I know in your non-raw videos you talk about your watts throughout the race, curious if you've explored posting the watts on screen during the raw footage. I've seen it on a couple other you-tubers, have no idea what technology they are using tho. thks for all the footage!!!
@@anthonyrodiger3793 thanks for watching. I will have power/data overlay on the full “Raw Files” videos I’ll release this winter. It’s a time consuming process to get the data on and it’s more important for the RU-vid Algorithms to get this video up asap!
Just had a realization - If you are on gravel tires instead of mtb tires, you can't ride anywhere near as close to the guy in front of you during the gravel sections and/or can't take the fastest lines without getting a flat or crashing. Mtb tires allow gravel racers to ride more like drafting road pelotons and as a result go waaaaay faster. A little front suspension to take the surprise hits doesn't hurt either. You can draft closer, switch sides easier, take the inside lines faster... They basically turn gravel into pavement and if you want to stay in the lead pack, you're going to need mtb tires to stay in there. Skinnier tires have you picking your way through stuff and you're gonna get dropped.
@@SteveFukuzawa-u2t it will be on the full “Raw Files” video! It’s a time consuming process to do which is why it’s not on the highlights as getting this video up fast is more important for RU-vid algorithms
Great finish Joe! Nicely done. I was there doing the 88 race and what an incredible experience I had. Around mile 38 I turned a corner not knowing on that road the Moto came up to me and said nice job but move over the boys are coming lol. Looked back and I see a wall of pros coming. The rider with the Ventum bike and crazy mustache grabbed me and pushed me forward with them and asked if I knew who was winning the woman’s race lol. I can honestly say I rode with you pros for a short time but I didn’t finish last so it was a good day. Beautiful area to race that’s for sure. See you guys in Wisconsin on Saturday
I always look forward to your race videos. As someone who'll probably never race in these scenarios (just seeing how closely people ride to each other gives me anxiety) I greatly appreciate this first-hand look at race dynamics. It's pretty intoxicating, imo. And great effort on your part!
Well done bro, too bad you blew up at the end but excellent 12th place!! What bike, tires (and size) and groupset drivetrain (gearing front and rear) were you riding hope you dont mind if i ask? And for the last commenter gravel is amazing!
Thank you! -Trek Checkpoint SLR 9 -Pirelli Gravel H’s in 45c -SRAM red explr (old generation) 1x (46t chain ring, 10-44 cassette) Setup was pretty great, if I were on the new red with the 10-46t cassette, I’d go for a 48t chain ring
@@jgoettl2.0 Great info thanks! My Pinarello Grevil came with Rival 1X XPLR, 42t chainring 10-44 cassette AXS. I do a ton of climbing as I live in So Cal, so climbs like Puerco Cyn (Off of PCH in Malibu), Bulldog (Malibu) and others left me wanting lower gears. I ended up switching derailleur to an Eagle GX, with the Garbaruk 10-52 cassette 42T chainring and the gearing is amazing! But the XPLR was phenomenal minus the big gears! Thanks again look forward to more of your videos! God Bless!
@@Hokum48 no problem! Sounds like a smart decision on your part! While I don’t recommend for non pro’s, I do ok with the 46t front and 44 biggest in the rear. I was hoping the new red was going to have a 48 on it but they only went to 46 biggest cog. For me, I think it will be optimal to run run a 48t front ring with the 10-46 cassette (when/if I switch to the new red) over the mtb cassette to have the gears closer together. But I think there is still for sure a place for the mtb gearing on gravel bikes for a lot folks in mountainous areas!
