Rugby will always have things happen to it to knock it down in the USA and that’s not because Americans don’t like it, the Americans I’v introduced it to over here love it, it’s because big money broadcasting hates the idea of a game that’ll go for forty minutes straight, with no ad revenue opportunities.

@@alohatigers1199Americans can already watch the english premiership (gallagher premiership) the problem is just that in rugby there is oy advert during half time. Meaning like 10 mins of adverts for 80 minutes of game + a lot of game replays which is what we have when it stops occasionally.

@@alohatigers1199 ….I bought a FloSports subscription and they would put adverts on during a live game, whilst the ball was in play, using splitscreen. One big screen for the ad and a titchy one for the game. Watching replays of games, they just go straight to a full screen ad. Fuggin annoying. PeacockTV is a lot better but they have a far more limited range of rugby comps, although they do have the RWC and 7’s series…. 6N too I think.

It’s not about size or athleticism. They are a horribly managed and choose shit coaches. I had friends go to the u20s camp and the selection process is insane. The athletes prerequisites are insane. I can’t even imagine the the actual national sides. These guys aren’t even small. There are 125,000 rugby players in the US. Compared to countries like Chile and Uruguay who at most have 15,000 registered rugby players and actually made the World Cup with way less money and players. That just proves it’s a management and coaching issue. It’s a management and coaching problem through and through. We have the skill and ability to be an up and coming tier 2 nation. I’m not saying USA rugby shouldn’t try expanding into those areas just to increase the player pool, cause they should but rugby is way more than just athletics. At the international level, that will get us nowhere. I’d put money that if we recruited NFL rejects or ex nfl players and ex college football players and trained them for a full world cup cycle (4 years) they’d still get there ass handed to them. Not because they aren’t physical but they just will not have enough experience or rugby IQ. Hell I’d bet Uruguay would beat them. Japan would smash them. The Uruguayan team is smaller and less athletic I’d say than the us pool of players now but hey they still beat us and made it to the World Cup. Rugby is way more complicated than that. It’s like a chess match that always keeps moving. USA rugby needs to be gutted and then we need foreign coaches dare I say it. And then USA rugby just needs to keep focusing on expanding and growing the sport. MLR is a good idea but grassroots rugby is how the game will really flourish. Trying to expand the entire USA player pool is how we will go. Getting more kids to start playing young and to keep playing. It’s too late to recruit players in past 20. Maybe a few but for a national team it’s unfeasible. Also I hate to say it but a lot of our players need to try to go and play abroad, which will be a challenge but we have had players go and do that. I’ve had coaches that have been saying the same gripes since I started playing in 2012. Horrible management, horrible coaching, not so great selection processes focusing more on athleticism than rugby IQ but on that I’ll say they kind of had to because the player pool is small but it’s a cycle because they need to focus on grassroots rugby and growing the game in the US to increase the player pool so the competition is higher. It’s a whole host of problems and it’ll be a long journey and tbh I’m not that optimistic. If we somehow get like soccer and have 4 million registered players, we’d easily be a borderline tier 1 nation, without a shadow of a doubt. Hell even half of that or a million. The biggest long term focus should be aggressively growing the game at the grassroots level to the high school level. GET PEOPLE TO PLAY THE GAME first and foremost and get their fucking shit in order for the long term. Short term they need a solid foreign coach but that’s gunna be hard cause usa rugby is so shit. It’s more nuanced then recruit big and athletic people to save the game in the US. The only reason we’re 18th in the world is cause most countries don’t have the population or money and some of those countries still made it. Like we would thrash Namibia. Go watch the squidge rugby RU-vid video on their team and union. Talk about a disaster of a rugby union. Corruption out the ass and basically no support but they still made it but the African competition isn’t that much harder the the americas qualifying. It’s a headache to think about. Makes me angry cause they are wasting a giant long term opportunity. I’ve thought and researched about this way to long.

US Rugby shut down for two years thanks to Covid and that had a huge impact on the national team. These smaller countries have national team players that compete together on the same clubs. With all that said, the Eagles drew with Portugal; who had a strong WC (why no extra time in an elimination qualifier?). The US men’s team also completed a successful fall. Plenty of upside.

And yet world rugby seems to have no problem managing the rest of the world; which if you didn’t know, is bigger than the USA. Shocking isn’t it, that the world doesn’t revolve around the USA? The issue is the innate greed in the USA. Look at your college football players; just because they can play football they get offers from the best universities AND full ride scholarships; along with having all their bad behaviour swept under the carpet. That’s what would happen if the USA got their greedy claws on rugby; greed and the sport would never be the same again. In fact the USA would start to dictate what the rest of the world’s organisations do.

As an American who grew up watching Tom Brady, NFL is not that appealing to the world. Those things that pay for things like referees and insurance,, managing various competitions etc. USA Rugby May not be great but there is so much tribalism in US rugby it is nearly impossible to manage. Instead of fighting turf wars maybe the various factions could actually work together. As for World Rugby - they desperately need the US. Don't be too hard on yourself. Rugby as a whole is a bit messed up, they messed up not going professional (it's why there's a union-league split) and it has damaged rugby ever since. Although the league players were ultimately proven right when union went professional, they never got their shit together and reunited the sport.

Can anyone tell me if NCR has any tie to NCAA?

No, the only NCAA connection to rugby is through NIRA, which is only for Women's rugby.

America always felt like the missing piece in rugby. Rugby should have The NFL's spot, it's more entertaining to watch because of the continuous action. Where as NFL has constant stops which is annoying & takes you out of the game as a person trying to give it a chance

Disagree, it's much more boring, and only more popular globally because it's easier to play and learn. Kicking a ball into a net ain't that interesting imo
