(20 Mar 1997) English/Nat
The widow of the once-feared Chinese general and Nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-shek, has been celebrating her one hundredth birthday at her home in New York.
She and her husband ruled China until 1949 when they fled into exile in Taiwan following the success of Mao Zedong's Communist Party.
There they ruled together with an iron fist until he died in 1975 and his widow moved to America.
Madame Chiang now lives in America.
She's seen here during the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and her efforts for the Allied cause in Asia.
Madame Chiang moved to New York's Long Island after her husband's death in 1975.
For her it was a return home
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"I came here as a child, spent my formative years here, and stayed through college. Therefore I will always think of America as my second home and it is good to be back home again."
SUPER CAPTION: Madame Chiang Kai-shek
More than half a century ago Madame Chiang became only the second woman to address both houses of the U-S Congress.
During the war she was a frequent guest of American leaders - holding audience with her husband Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek.
Her birthday isn't being celebrated back home in Taiwan where they've erected a monument bearing an inscription holding the general responsible for ordering troops to slaughter thousands of Taiwanese in the 1947 massacre.

Sigh, I wish we had a time machine, my friend. Perhaps if Nationalist China (the ROC) had won the civil war, then China and India today would be allies, and China and America today would be brothers. :)

@Andrew Yu Young Earn now I *know* you’re a bot. The Chinese granted 18 trademarks in 2months to Ivanka after her father was President, then he agreed ZTE could sell phones in the U.S. Straight line corruption, simple.

@Andrew Yu Young Earn Ivanka gets paid by the Chinese Government then their telecom company gets to earn money in America. The Chinese called Ivanka the Princess and Jared the Princeling. That’s corruption in its simplest form.

Personally, as someone who has deeply studied Chinese and Asian history, I think Meiling was indeed a true hero, albeit a flawed one. True "heroes" are not perfect or saints, nor are they meant to be so. I admire her because overall, I truly believe she did save more lives than not. :) 🇹🇼 🇹🇼 🇹🇼

Her accent’s definitely shifted to a more contemporary American one over the years. I saw videos of her speeches during WW2 and she definitely had more of a Mid-Atlantic accent.

Probably means she was actually 95 because East Asians tend to add one more year to their age. It's called East Asian age reckoning.

She aged extremely well. What's crazy is she was a heavy smoker for many decades. She outlived both of her stepsons. Died in 2003 at 106 years old. Her life spans 3 different centuries. I remember George W. Bush released a statement when she passed.

His 4th wife Juliana died 3 years ago at age 112. Young Marshal Chang Hsueh-liang lived to 100. Japanese collaborator Wang Jingwei had 5 children. His oldest lived to 98. His 2nd oldest lived to 101. His 3rd child lived to 95. His 4th child died relatively early at 80. His youngest is still alive at 92. Among Chiang's top generals, Ho Ying-chin lived to 97, Gu Zhutong lived to 94, Kuo Chi-Chiao lived to 95, Huang Chieh lived to 92, Hsueh Yueh lived to 101, Kao Kuei-yuan lived to 105, Wang Daoyuan lived to 98, and Hau Pei-tsun just passed away this year at 101.
