It was a very good idea of Boeing to make the E-3 AWACS with the 707. The IL-76's landing was awesome.

Keep in mind that new version of IL-76- the new IL-76MD-90A (some people call it- IL-476) has already entered production, which is a completely new aircraft- with modern and more powerful engines, low noise, made by completely different materials (composive) and with totally new avionics systems and will follow it, MY FAVOURITE VERSION- the upcoming IL-76MF-90A ("MF"- is 6,6 meters longer than the previous "MD" version!!)

The actual touchdown is a 3 point one ( nose and main gears touch the rnwy simultaniously ), in order to slow down more effectively, when on the ground they raise the nose back to create more drag, helping the reversers. You can see similar at delta winged fighters too, only their touchdown is a 2 point one. As seen here, it's a speciality of the IL-76.

Deploying the thrust reversers before the nose wheel is on the ground is a great way to put the aircraft on its tail.

That landing is called aerodynamic braking
@Elfokko
@Elfokko 12 лет назад
The IL76 is a well designed aircraft. In this case it just shows the bad brake capability by the steel brakes and outer thrust reversers..So the crew decided the aerodynamic brake and lifted the nose very high after touch down. This aircraft would fly forever if they install some upgrades. Engines,brake, avionics etc. The hull is designed for save life !! Experts know what I mean

Thanks for posting this video. It showed the enormous flaps on both aircraft, and the numerous high-lift devices on the Il-76. I didn't know that the AWACS craft (modified 707?) didn't have reversers. That would really make a difference, as you say. We used to watch the 707s descend into Lambert Field in St. Louis, roaring along with almost full power to keep flying with those gigantic flaps deployed. That was quite something, way back when.

For the person below, it looks like there is an incline in the runway after the touchdown markers and that's why both aircraft had a nose up after touchdown. The second pilot just seem a bit more unfamiliar, and unprepared with the runway and that's why he took a bit longer in response.

That's interesting: The IL-76 pilot seems to have to get the plane's nose pointed down much more than the AWACS. Usually only the older large prop driven planes take such an attitude on approach.

I believe the plane in question was the second one that landed, that was an IL-78 aerial refueling tanker. And as of 25th May 2009, India inducted its first full capability AWAC, an Israeli Phalcon AWAC system mounted on an IL-76 (similar to the one in the video) aircraft. As for missiles, India has some long range BVR missiles (R-27, R-77, Astra (in development)) and is jointly developing the Novator K-100 "AWAC killer" missile with Russia.

@Basabe7 No its with aircraft construction and the way the wing is positioned in relation to the fuselage (to have least drag at high speed, it needs low AOA on landing)
@azimuth361

Either way, according to the navigator of the IL-76 I flew in from Baghdad to Thesaloniki, the Soviets put a guy with a map up front up until the mid-90's. That's why Russian planes had glass noses.

they were shortening the landing distance by lifting up the front gear after touch down. (other than deploying spoiler and maybe applying some reverse thrust)

@Basabe7 You don't understand...the wing AOA relative to the line of the fuselage, not the position of the wing. The wing is bent in a different manner on a IL-76 so that when it flies level at speed, it has the wing AOA relative to the airstream in a different position compared to a C-17...I don't know how to explain it, look up the vids of the C-17s wings and the IL-76 wings.

@missymonroe72 Yes, you are right about the YC-15 origin, but I am not wrong about it being based off the C-141/C-5. The YC-15 was intended to replace the C-130's. Although it was canceled, the T-tail design and high wing mount designs had to come from the C-141's and C-5's. The YC-15 never even had a payload close to the C-17, which at the time the Air Force was looking for a plane to combine the capacity of C-5 and C-141's, yet have have same flexibility/maneuverbility as the C-130.

OK, Mr. FAIP or UPT washout. It was a smooth touchdown and not a banged nose gear, thanks for playing.
@e3pilot1
@e3pilot1 12 лет назад
The E-3 doesn't have thrust reversers, and when I deployed the spoilers, I didn't have enough down force on the yoke which is what caused the slight nose rise.
@Babacaru
@Babacaru 13 лет назад
@flchange The il-76 is designed to fly pitching down. You can't necessarily flare up with it or you will gain lift. The flaps are so massive that they produce a lot of lift,
@e3pilot1
@e3pilot1 13 лет назад
This was my landing. (the AWACS one) I let the nose come up a little after the spoilers were deployed, plus there is a slight rise in the runway at the touchdown zone. The landing was very smooth so it wasn't a bounce that caused the nose to rise, just not enough forward yoke pressure. I wasn't trying to aerobrake like the Indian IL was. Aerobraking is not a tech order procedure in AWACS so we don't do it. And the effects of the dome are negligible in flight, but it weighs 30,000 lbs!

@gypsykingg Thats weird because when I was an Air Surveillance Technician on the E-3B/C they taught us it created lift. They even showed us how, as it is shaped like an airfoil that rotates.

@DrBPhD I know, that was a joke. This actually makes sense. The aircraft's belly is a surface larger than the spoilers, so it can play the same role more effectively.

Oh, I don't know if one is necessarily better than the other. They're just different. West: Advanced and precise. East: Simple and rugged. Long after the west subscribed to GPS, LOR, VOR and ILS for navigation, the Soviets still built planes with a glass nose and a guy up front with a map, compass and stopwatch.

@MegaStealth101 Well, the jet blue flight that stuck gear had to do aerodynamic breaking, and then this aircraft here rotated while the reverse thrust was engaged, so I assume that it's just a maneuver that they use to slow down the aircraft.

Yea, it's just airbraking. You pull the yoke all the way back and it gives the plane maximum drag to slow it down. The pilot just holds the yoke back after touchdown and the plane will gently settle all on it's own as the airspeed bleeds out.

@hasenpfote272 Actually its got the 4th largest Airforce in the world. And,yes, it does defend us against Pakistan.Quite well in fact. BTW apart from the IL-76s the IAF is moving to acquire 10 C-17 Globemaster from US with an option of 6 more.The IAF would be the 2nd largest operator of C-17s after the US.

Considering an average age and a number in use by a poorest 3rd world airlines it has to have more crashes than B-2 bomber for sure. In fact old Soviet jets may look like a gypsy vans but technically much safer than any western airliner is. The reason they are mostly appendix projects made out of military designs with much different standards of way higher reliability and a specific approach to maintanance.
