Usagi Yojimbo The Gallery Edition: The Artist and Other Stories is the second Usagi Gallery Edition, (find my video on the first one here: • My Favorite Way to Rea... ) and, just like the first one, showcases and celebrates Stan Sakai's genius in comics storytelling. I still remember always looking at Usagi in my teens but buying it because i was worried it would be a funny animal comic and not the Japanese historical adventure i hoped-for. Thankfully, i tried it. Finally i grabbed Grasscutter, and have been hooked for over 25 years. Enjoying your videos.

Great video! I think it was mentioned in the book but the story "Chanoyu" reproduced in this book included one page that was not scanned from the original artwork. Page 21 of Chanoyu is the only page of original art from a published Usagi Yojimbo story that Stan Sakai has ever sold. Of course, he has sold alternate or unused pages, and pages for collaborative stories like "Usagi's Ark" have been sold, but he has kept all the original artwork for the actual Usagi series, except this Chanoyu page and another page That he gave away as a wedding gift.

This Volume 2 Edition is very hard to find now. You're lucky you were able to snag one! I'm still hunting for this one.

I love the handheld camera approach. It really captures the art beautifully and is kind of akin to the way your eyes would move across panels and pages when reading, so I think it's a wonderful way to give someone a 'feel' for the book.

Really enjoy Usagi Yojimbo but more for the stories. I'm not crazy about the art in all honestly so despite being a big fan of Artist Editions in general (I have about 20), I passed on this one. Great video as usual though.

Twenty! Wow! I know what you mean, even though I love the art of Usagi myself. Also, as I mention in my previous Usagi Gallery Ed video, Sakai's art is so clean and so lacking in corrections or unused lines that it feels like reading a finished comic (Usagi being a mainly black and white comic contributes to that too) . People looking for art process and formative workings will not find these the books for them perhaps, whereas I think of them as giant editions of some great stories😁.

They're gorgeous books, and yes, they can be expensive, even when on sale, There's nothing quite like them though, which is what makes them worth it for me personally. For everything we don't buy ourselves, there's RU-vid videos! 😋

I'm tempted to get these Gallery Editions, as a big book to read. Do you think starting with the second volume is a good idea, as I'm more used to the later iterations of Usagi? I've fallen in love with the series through the new color version, which might be to my discredit, but that's how it worked for me.

You can't go wrong with either volume, but absolutely - the later style is on full display in the superb stories collected in The Artist, and they work just fine as standalone reads. In my 'How to Get Started Reading Usagi' video, I did mention that a lot of this series can be read in whatever order you want, in spite of it having an interior chronology. IDW is also planning to reprint all older Usagi stories (although I am not sure if that will stretch back to Albedo and Fantagraphics or just to Mirage and Dark Horse) so I'm expecting a few more options to become available soon, no matter what you want to try.

Yes, the news broke at the same time as the previous Gallery Ed. video was published. I have full faith in Stan Sakai continuing to deliver, and I’m really curious about the new colour editions of older books that will now come out!

I like the new filming techniques but I would prefer if it was a mix of the usual top-down style videos you do. For me, I feel that would help me from being to distracted by the camera movement. But overall good stuff!

That is great feedback - I too was thinking I need a mix more than just one type of shot, but of course that means twice the amount of time shooting and twice the amount of time editing. But nobody said it'd be easy! =) Thanks again for the advice and look for it to be implemented as soon as I get a chance to put it into play !

do you think, or have any news on dark horse releasing volume 9 ( the final HC book to match there 1 - 8 editons of the saga? LOVE your channel !

Steven Fairweather Thank you so much! And they just released Book 8! (There’s seven books in the Saga and one unnumbered Legends volume). Amazon US shows a release date of May 28 for it, but a friend in Singapore picked up a copy at a bookstore already last week. That’s the last of the DH books I guess, but I’m glad they got it out!

Steven Fairweather the Legends book contains stories from all across the chronology, so you can actually read UYSaga Book 2 then some Legends, Book 3 then some Legends, and so on. You can definitely read Legends before Book 8.
