Reminds me of how the CIA destroyed the uranium concentrating centrifuges at a nuclear plant in Iran. They just dropped a few USB thumb drives outside, near the lab entrance. Eventually a young local scientist picked one up. Suspecting no foul play and wanting to know what was on it if anything, our young inexperienced scientist plugged it in the main circuit of the building. Soon after, the centrifuges started over spinning and one after the other, all blew up, mission accomplished.

Yup, it's a tried and tested method, especially to infect airgapped systems such as in the example you mention.

Love how the CIA is thought of as a super creative agency but it honestly is really as simple as plugging in a usb that were thrown out outside. But the real trick up the sleeve is the cyber warfare folks who code malware

It was StuxNet, not USB kill sticks. StuxNet forced the refiners to work at irregularly changing speeds wearing them down fast all while spoofing the control system with data as though they were working perfectly.

@@yashojitbhaumik6012 Okay, but how did StuxNet get in there then? From what I saw, strategically placed kill sticks near the plant to arouse as little suspicion as possible were laid there and eventually one guy from the inside picked up one of those, brought it in and wanted to see what was on it... Of course that could be complete bunk, when it comes to US operations, one is always free to believe any of the 20 versions let loose whether it's the WMDs, incubators, Tonkin, freedom fighters, evil doers, USS Maine, we don't negotiate with commies... I MEAN terrorists, Saddam, Khaddafi, Assan, Putin, Putin or Xi-Putin, all options are on the table, read his lips, he kept us from the war or the axis of fat dudes in NHK... who knows! BUT, the sticks made sense to me.

I would be cautious about overvolting something with a lithium battery in it!

Does this device destroy the hard drive? Memory card? Or just kills power? Thanks

It destroys anything the electrical surge will reach, so that can include drive controllers, etc.

Are USB kill sticks legal in the UK ?
@FidgetCHAD
@FidgetCHAD Год назад
They are illegal if u use them illegally for example like a gun if u shoot someone for bad reasons it is illegal and if u use it as self defence it is legal so if u harm someone with the usb and they find out u did it and report u u go to jail

kill the hard drive ?
@SydneyButler
@SydneyButler Год назад
It's possible, it depends on whether the surge reached the drive controller or not, but it's not a guaranteed kill and data could still be recovered from a mechanical drive.
