USB Oscilloscope-Pros & Cons (4K)

Many years ago I bought a USB oscilloscope. It's a small box with 2 BNC connectors, a USB port, and a test signal out. It came with software that takes data from the box and makes the computer into a nice oscilloscope. BUT, would I do it again? Why or why not?
There are several factors one might find important that I never heard discussed before I bought.

I think I found that same one. I ran down all the leads and links and they were all dead ends. Sad.

C'mon, we now play even nearly every Windows game on Linux. From old to new. You don't even need to use Windows. Of course, I would still be interested to know from others if that software in particular works fine. All that said, I hope they will make some FOSS version of such software at some point, so hard- and software is separated. Also, you could always get old hardware very cheap and install Windows XP or whatever.

I just got a Hantek 6022 for fun, on Win 10 the Hantek software worked, but I also installed OpenHantek6022 which is free, open source etc and seemed better. I belive the open source version will run on Linux/Mac. There is also OpenHantek and I believe Sigrok (similar open source project) will also work with the scope. Your software looks like what comes with the Hantek.

I will have to try the open source with mine. It's not Hantek but it costs nothing to try. Thanks.

@@tsbrownie Google shows a few open source packages for the Sain Smart DDS-120 which I gather is yours.

@@david_pilling I never even thought to look. Again thanks. I have a friend that wants it, but the old laptop is a bother.

@@david_pilling I did that search and followed the links. Some were dead, some were just comments, one led to an open source thing but no windows support that I saw, just a tar ball for unix.

@@tsbrownie You've got a nice new scope which will be better - hope you enjoy it.

Dunno man, I've heard every single one of these arguments before. Everybody is talking about the software support when it comes to USB oscilloscopes. As for the extra space due to the laptop: I have a dedicated place for my laptop on my table at home and I use a tower PC at work. So, I don't consider it as fair to say that the PC/Laptop costs extra space. I mean, I probably also have google open while working, or Altium or something. I am going to need the PC/Laptop anyway. But at the end of the day, the software support issue is the biggest problem and the reason why I have not bought such a USB oscilloscope yet. Oh! I would be interested to find out if your USB Oscilloscope would work under Linux (a live version is fine), through WINE. Because in that case, one almost could live with such a workaround, if money is an issue and so you would absolutely have to go for a cheap USB oscilloscope. Have you ever tried it out?

I tried with Ubuntu and wine but it was a no-go.

@@tsbrownie That's sad. Thanks for trying out!

Isn't the real problem with some of the cheaper USB oscilloscopes that they don't provide protection to PC they are hooked into? You better be using the cheapest laptop you can, because sooner or later you will make a mistake that takes out your PC?

That's a really good point. Enough voltage and it will jump across circuitry.

This was a problem but they are some USB oscilloscopes that they have an isolation for this reason. They aren't expensive btw, under 100 dollars/euros.
