Having an electronic engineering degree and a ham radio license it is absolutely fabulous to see you someone actually testing products. One of the best recommendations that RU-vid has ever given me. Thank you for your diligence. As you said the open box and let's look at product is not a product review.

Wow Martin! A lot of work there. A few comments and questions. 1) Voltage roll off at end of discharge. Did all of the units cut out rapidly at the end of the discharge from 5V to 0V or did they start dropping to 4.9, 4.8, 4.7 and then finally cut out over the last 10 minutes? 2) Capacity drop after X number of complete charge discharge cycles. After 10 cycles how much capacity have they lost? Likely want to stay away from the units that are only going to be useful for 6 months. 3) Nit picking... perhaps use a second row (or divided column) for those lines that have exceptions or for multiple ports. Instead of "Yes port 1 only" use 2 columns and use yes or a check mark in each. Less confusion I think. Like what is the difference between "Yes port 1 only" and "yes port 1"? Any how, GOOD WORK MARTIN !!

Only watched the beginning so far so apologies if you tested it properly later on. Those jump starters are meant to "boost" a dead battery, they'll provide about 300amps or so with the hope that the depleted car battery connected in parallel will provide the additional oomph required to jump the vehicle. I've successfully jumped a 1.9ltr TDi with one. Left lights on in garage overnight, came out to a dead car, even central locking was sluggish. Hooked up my jumpstarter (got mine from hobbyking, so different make but exact same casing fonts/etc) and left it 15 minutes hooked up, then cranked it. Started 1st try. Disconnecting a battery and replacing it with one of those devices is asking for a fail, though will still work in some cases especially on smaller petrol engines.

Hi Martin. Nice video as always but i miss a bit hmm if it is possible it would be nice to see what is really inside..because quality you can't tell just from outside and maybe there is reason why you pay more for product. Soo if possible some some teardown video would be nice also :)
@mjlorton
@mjlorton 9 лет назад
SylwerDragon Good point. I started the video saying that...but I had not hit the bloody record button so lost a bit of filming!!! Silly me... So let me say it here...this video does not cover the the cables, accessories or (importantly) the inside build quality. I would also like to test the claims of 500+ and 1000+ cycles of the cells. That will take a whole lot more testing and time...but it's on my "to do" list. Thanks for the post.

Yeah, I would have liked to have seen more information regarding how these units differ in design, usb charging specs/pin outs, different charging cables' resistance, information on the IC Anker is using for its "Power IQ chargers, and how this can all impact charge rate as opposed to simply a test of each unit's performance.

I do believe manufacturers and especially Chinese sellers will overstate capacity on power banks. BUT, I also believe that those stated capacities are the LiIon/LiPo battery's capacities. Now, due to stepping up to 5V the current on the high side will be roughly 74% of the current on the low side - which pretty much matches the capacity difference for the EasyAcc bank (10 Ah @ 3.7 V vs. 7.2 Ah @ 5 V). This would also explain why the measured stored energy (Wh) matches the stated value, since that'd only get notably affected by the efficiency of the boost circuit. I'm not saying it's the best to declare the battery's capacity, I do agree that Wh should be used. But then phone manufacturers etc. should adopt Wh ratings over mAh ratings. Also on a side note, given that most portable devices do have a single lithium cell in them, the capacity rating might actually be almost met, after stepping back down to 3.7 V by the device (as in, a 10 Ah power bank will actually charge a device with 10 Ah battery) (minus losses in boost and buck converters of course).

Martin, I have had one of the first item you identified, the 10,400 mAh unit. I have used it for about two months now, to charge an iPhone 5, as needed. It has performed quite well, every time. I think I paid about $10 or $12 USD for it, if I recall, prior to leaving the US to return home to Cambodia. I hope it continues to perform as it has in the past.
@samgab
@samgab 8 лет назад
Excellent stuff, thank you Martin. I appreciate the time and effort you put into this. I have a suggestion, if you are ever looking for new ideas. I see the market has been flooded with Power Banks of the type that purport to jump start cars. You had one of these in your testing here. No one has done intensive testing of several of these type of units side-by-side, showing what their true capacities are, their true high amp jump starting capabilities, and feature comparisons. The "PowerAll" is one of the better known versions, as they seem to have done a fair bit of marketing, but there are lots of cheap eBay/Amazon alternatives too, and one doesn't know what one is going to get if buying online... Well, just an idea for you. Keep up the good work, and have a good 2016!
@mjlorton
@mjlorton 8 лет назад
+Samgab Thanks Sam. Good point and it's something I've already bookmarked as a future test. The other issue that's come to my mind with these devices is how long they can sit around in a car before their own self discharge makes them useless in an emergency. I think I have a solution for that issue but one I need to test. All the best for 2016.
@samgab
@samgab 8 лет назад
Cheers. Yes I agree about the self-discharge potential issue. Li-Ion chemistry isn't that bad for self discharge, but if it is kept in a vehicle you have potentially great temperature variances, and also Li-Ion chemistry doesn't like being kept at 100% charge, which is exactly what you'd want to do with an emergency power source. I think my simple solution when I buy one is to top-up charge it every 3-6 months, and don't expect it to last more than about 3 years for emergency dependence. Then it can be relegated to non-emergency USB power bank functionality and replaced with a newer device.

These battery banks are advertising the ratings of the lithium cells inside, which at 3.7 volts. Take the amp-hour rating times 3.7 to get the watt-hour rating, which is an actual measurement of capacity, then divide that by the voltage you'll be using, which is 5 volts, and you'll get the amp-hour rating for the voltage you'll be using at the output. Due to boost converters not being perfectly efficient, if you take that number times 0.9 (90%), you end up with a number that's very close to what your "actual" capacities ended up being. If you do the math on your results, you'll see that the amp-hour rating adjusted for 5 volts is pretty close to what your measured amp-hour ratings ended up being. We can't expect anyone to advertise the actual capacity because the average Joe won't know any better and would pick the one with the rating of the internal cells since it's a bigger number. Stupid marketing. That being said, Joules would be the proper unit for stating the capacities of these things. Great video!

In your final spreadsheet you have omitted what I would consider to be the main selling point of a powerbank, after actual capacity and cost - whether it has a proper LCD display for power remaining instead of those four dots that you have to guess how much is left. Fast charge is grossly overrated, 1 amp charge is quite sufficient if you go around with the phone connected to the powerbank. Ditto flashlight, you have a flashlight on the phone itself! LCD display vs those infernal four dots should be given more prominence.

Again another very thorough report. Thank you. Two of my powerbanks have inbuilt QI transmitters. I bought mine before fast-charging QI was available. QI transmitters can be added via self-adhesive tapes or 3rd party external units to any USB power outlet. Could you test these one day, for QI charge rates & efficiencies please? BTW: any device with standard USB ports can also use the 3rd party QI-receivers. I found this useful, on table-tops or in my belt pouch. No cable attachments needed for my hand-held units.

Your real capacity calculations are oddly near 60%. I think manufacturers are using Ah in reference to 3.7V, because mobile devices have batteries rated in mAh at this voltage, and so do the power bank batteries. You are calculating this at 5V, hence the low results. 3.7V is 74% of 5V. I.e. many power banks claim capacities with oddly recurring numbers, especially 10400 mAh. This is due to 4x3.7V@2.6Ah batteries internally. At 5V it's 7700 mAh.
@jusb1066
@jusb1066 9 лет назад
TheMatgaw also because they voltage is boosted by a dc converter it also isnt 100 percent efficient, and neither is charging another battery all that efficient, in reality a 12000 mah bank will just about charge an ipad mini which has a 5000ma battery, due to all the conversion losses
@skizgrzl
@skizgrzl 9 лет назад
jusb1066 You guys are totally right. I JUST did a video about this, and commented on this video to let Martin know about it, but youtube's spam filtering keeps killing my comments :(
@lordofthebeltsthereturnoft1127
You are correct, also how is Martin on this video getting a lower mAh rating but then saying it was more Watt Hours? How does that make sense? For example on the EasyAcc one he has 10Ah at 3.7v which is 37Wh and that is their claim. But then he is testing from the 5V port and he got 7.2Ah from that port which would be 36Wh and not 37.6Wh which he has written down on there. As you said you will never get the same Ah out of the 5V port as it has to step up the voltage and in doing so the Ah is lowered, but it's still the same amount of power in Wh (with 1-5% losses usually from the step up conversion).

I had a question...with all of these, but specifically with the Anker, how long will these hold a charge after being charged if left idle? And is there a breakdown as to how much they lose over time? Great review as always.

It's interesting with the Goal Zero and there other products, I think they could be all hacked and modified to be compatible with other connections and solar panels and maybe change the battery to a calb lithium and probably change the power inverter to a higher watt especially the one that Goal Zero 1250 has.

Hi, thanks for putting this great review together. Just had a couple of questions from your spreadsheet. You seem to have skipped off the Anker 16,000 mAh device, do you have the results elsewhere for this? Also I see the Goal Zero listed as having a tested capacity of 22.71 AH when it's only rated for 14,000 mAh, I'm guessing this was a typo but can you confirm? I'm trying to find the highest true capacity power bank for some Traveling I'll be doing soon, so interested to work out which was the most capacious among your tests. Thanks again for the great videos!

One of those projects where there isn't any meaningful shortcuts... Thank you for devoting so many hours of your life to this comparison! Certainly allows us to make more informed choices and save serious money or disappointment. Would also make a nice annual series once some new devices come out and existing ones are revised (possibly using your feedback). Would hope that in such a case more manufacturers at leat offer you their devices for review for free.

Nice video Martin, such a lot of effort and man hours to bring all that data to bear. Just shows you, it's easy to get 'Duped' by manufacturers claimed spec. If you are in a shop and all you have to go on is their word for it, it could cost a fortune before you get one that actually does what it says on the tin (To quote a famous UK Varnish advert) You just may have saved a lot of people a lot of money.

HI Martin, I solar charge a RAVPower 13000mAh model# RP-PB22 powerbank . The solar charger is Sunkingdom 8W non-folding white plastic panel which works quite well! My problem is any sunlight disturbance (clouds or flicker of shadow) will cause the powerbank to cease charging, and it will not resume charge under direct sunlight. I understand this happens when solar panel is direct charging iPhone device - and that is the reason I am charging powerbank. I have to manually reset the powerbank by reinserting USB. Is this phenomenon restricted to this particular RAVPower powerbank or all powerbanks in general? In other words, are there other powerbanks more suitable for USB solar chargers?

Thanks for these videos, exactly the kind of information I need. The problem is I'm looking for something which can deliver 12V (preferably 9V) for my camera so that I can run it for large periods of time doing time lapse photography. Many others would be interested in large capacity batteries for video or their Sony cameras which seriously lack in that department. The market for these batteries seems to be highly convoluted and the ratings for these batteries misleading because amp-hours scale with voltage, and they seem to rate for their batteries (3.7V) and not at expected voltage loads for example 5V or 12V. RAVPower 23000mah seems to be the most capable design on Amazon but reviews for it are also sketchy, I'd be interested to see how it does in the real world.

That thing about not being able to charge the Blackberry at all. I have that experience with several Nokia phones, actually all the Nokia phones I have (N8, N9, 808 PureView and Lumia 1020). They just do not charge with any car charger unless it's made FOR a Nokia.. It's weird. And for house chargers with USB cables, even if it's a high power charger (2.1A), some just won't charge it, even if I use a short cable. I checked it with the YZXstudio USB meter, and I'm no brighter on the subject. I have no idea why Nokia phones are so picky :P

On the Scud USA you said it could do 6.6 iPhone charges. Was that 6.6 calculated from its amp power or from real test charging of 6.6 times? I have a JetSun that based on someone's formula claimed it could charge iPhone 7 Plus 8 times, but in reality it could only charge my iPhone 7 Plus 2 times.

Hi mjlorton. I'm really impressed with the thoroughness of your testing and results spreadsheeting. The kind of thing I do when I want to compare stuff. I am curious though what equipment you used to log and record the results, and what cables you used. I've done some current(amperage) testing with several cables I purchased with all my devices and have gotten wildly varying results, and not a single cable was best for all devices, although there were a couple of standouts. My OEM Sony cable being one of them.

YOUR PHONE CHARGES @ 5v SO YOU CAN'T USE THE 3.7v RATING! 20,000mAh or 20Ah rated battery pack multiplied by 3.7v = 74,000 divided by 5v = 14,800 @ 80 to 90% so 14,800 multiplied by 0.9 = 13,320 and that's the true rating divided by the amp hour rating of your battery so say it's 3,400mAh for math sake we use 3400.00mAh = 3.91 Charges if everything is perfect so we'll use the optimal percentage of effiecency due to the 5v step up! But because The cord, the charging port, connection and Device Battery brings it down to 80%! As time goes on the efficency goes down from 80 and so on which you change the 0.9 to 0.8 so the 14,800 multiplied by 0.8 = 11,840 divided by your device battery, say the same as before which is 3400.00 so you will get 3.48 charges and not the 5.88 charges you're led to believe! The LAW OF CONSERVATION

Thank you Martin, nice work. I have an original Xiaomi 10400mAh which can draw 2.2A (measured by USB Charger Doctor) when being charged with 2A output rated AC Adapter (ASUS). Compared to Scud USA which only draws 0.9A when being charged, I think this explains something. Thanks again..

I don't get the need of the different ratings on the USB ports. Why not put 2x 2.1 in it? Or 2x 1.5? Nonesense...

Xiaomi Mi powerbank is the original, some say they have the best powerbanks out there, i recently picked up a ravpower 6700 mAh wich is awesome, it comes with a 60 cm flat cable, thinking about picking up a 20-30 cm one to maximize efficiency.

Martin, is any of these powerbanks (apart from the ones with a dedicated solar) capable of being charged and charge a device at the same time? Eg. Is ist possible to connect a 5V Solar via the charging port to a powerbank to make it a charge buffer for another device?
@Mixte83

I was wondering the same... I think the feature is called "pass-through charging" or "direct charging"? It seems not to be a common feature at all but it would seal the deal for me when purchasing a power bank. Could you please test this, Martin? Well done comparison all in all, watched every single minute of it, thanks!

Mixte83 The problem came up during my last trip to Caucasus. I happened to be a powerplant for my group widh: 2 chinese 5Ah powerbanks and a 10W foldable solar and usb splitter, Solar charged the banks quite well in full exposure to high mountain sun butwhen I plugged anything and press the power button the solar charging stopped. Had to disconnect solar first.

what i did to get around all the fake cells, is you can buy a powerbank box with the circuitry, a kit (well you just clip it together, no soldering) and buy a couple of used laptop batteries and i was lucky and got enough cells for 2 powerbanks with cells that are at least 2200mah, and for a lot less price, around £5 for a laptop battery with 6 cells and about £2 for the powerbank kit. Be careful you are buying a genuine used laptopbattery and not a chinese replacement, and preferably one from someone who dropped their laptop or somesuch, so you get better cells

jusb1066 This is what I did, but went one better (albeit slightly more expensive). I got a DIY kit 4 channel power bank, and bought batteries from the E-Cigarette vendors, which have genuine capacities of up to 3400mAh (FYI atm 3400mAh is the greatest capacity you can get in an 18650 cell; made by panasonic). I bought 4 panasonic cells for mine and as soon as I got them I fully charged each and noted what my hobby charger pulled out of them on its discharge cycle at 2A until it shut off at termination voltage of 3.2V which is reasonably kind to the cells. I averaged between 2950 and 3200 mAh of capacity, bear in mind I didnt fully discharge the cells to 3.0 volts which is roughly when you should stop using them and put them back on charge.

When I heard you say the "Xiaomi" power bank had sharp edges - I knew it was fake. If you scroll down on the page for their 16000mAh unit - www.mi.com/en/pb16000/ - you can see a close-up of the chamfered edges on an authentic one. And here's a guide as to how the BBC suggests you pronounce the name: www.bbc.com/news/blogs-magazine-monitor-30848303 - in short, "SHOW-mee", with the "show" as in "shower".

Every single one of those things are pure overpriced garbage. More crap to tote around and have to worry about plugging in later to charge up, finding space in a travel bag, getting through airport security, and making sure it doesn't get stolen..... Because traditionally when you go camping you want to take 3 smartphones, 2 tablets, a laptop, a 4g hotspot biscuit.. Why not just check into a hotel. Maybe in the UK is perfectly normal to bring all the electronics from home camping with you but here in the States we try to get away from all that bullshit when were camping, Yes we will have a cell phone in case of an emergency but it remains in the car and turned OFF. The last thing I want to hear while I am camping is a god damn cell phone bleeping and chirping all damn night..

Hi Martin! I've watched the review. Very interesting and informative. Do you know how they rate the capacity? I think they rate the capacity as the capacity of the battery used. When charging you have conversion efficiency and that will take a toll on the charging capacity.

xiaomi builds oem powerbanks for many companies, even asus. Just like they do with mobile phones. You just make an order of at least a few thousand devices and they will print whatever you want on them. Fortunately they build devices of good quality.
