During the college football game between USC and Utah, USC was granted a timeout that was called in the middle of a play. The clock was reset to the point when USC called the timeout, even though more time ran off the clock before the play ended. USC gained an extra five seconds because of the ruling, but it did not affect the outcome as Utah defeated USC 43-42.

For those confused, what the official is saying is that the "Time out signal" was given. This is where the official crosses his arms over his head. Despite the name of the signal, it's used for more than just time outs. It's used anytime they want the clock to stop. They do it for Time Outs as well as incomplete passes, out of bounds plays and so on. Looks like the official who signaled it thought it was an incomplete pass or something. It was a bad call, but they are saying since the "Time out signal" was given that the clock should have been stopped.

@@TheodoreBrosevelt On this particular play the clock still should have stayed running and the penalty applied only after the play was over with the clock remaining where it stopped at the end of the play. So in theory they could have run all over the field killing the clock. That said, there is a rule that states the game can not end on a defensive penalty and even if the clock ran out they still get to run another play. It would be interesting though if they changed it to where the clock rolled back to when the penalty was actually committed, but I'm also sure that would drag a game on as the officials would have to go back and look at when the penalty was thrown.

My assumption is that, because of the pass interference, the play would have been considered dead anyway, and the time that was run off the clock during the runback would be given back. Otherwise, you'd be allowed to interfere with the receiver, get an interception and run around until the clock ran out.
@noex100
@noex100 Год назад

Genuine question I have never really thought about this but how does the clock stoppage work on a play like this? If the defense makes an interception but there is pass interference called. Is the clock suppose to continue during the run back even though their was a penalty? Should USC have only had 1 untimed down because the clock should have expired during the interception return or does the clock reset to the time when the pass interference was called?
@michaelpeck1346
@michaelpeck1346 Год назад
The clock isn't supposed to stop until the play is over even if there is a penalty for interference. Theoretically the defender could run around until the clock is at zero but the game can't end on a defensive penalty so the offense would have one play with a zero clock.

I'm guessing that because Utah got an INT off the PI, they could have ran as much time off the clock as they could have because of an infraction. But maybe there should just be a rule that's basically the opposite of a ten second runoff: if the winning team is able to waste time by committing a penalty, then the game clock goes back to the time that the infraction occurred at.

No that doesn't matter. The play must go to completion no matter if there's a hundred penalties. The reason the clock was reset in this instance was the play was whistled dead by accident. That's literally the dumbest rule you just suggested as if any team is knowingly looking to waste a few extra seconds here in a situation that may occur once every 10 years.
