I always keep an open mind to get tips with some good ones from this channel. She is right that a grid in a 5 gal bucket is the way to go over a tray. Long term or use it everyday I do not recommend keeping a grid or roller handle submerged in a sealed bucket. They will develop rust and that will get into your paint which will then get on wall besides ruining your tools with rust. Grids always rust, but a good aluminum handle will not so you could get away with it, but still don't recommend because it is messy and gunks up tools. Notice all the paint on the metal part of the handle when she loads and especially after submerged. Want to paint a room without any drips? Keep that part clean because that is where the drips come from usually. Lightly kiss the paint a few and distribute on the grid a few times. Roll out on the wall and repeat to saturate roller. Once you get that "squushy" sound that is good. A roller needs to be saturated to begin to perform optimal. Wipe metal handle with rag if you over dip. One can paint a room with no drips, or very few this way. Use a plastic shopping bag to wrap roller with clothes pin on handle when not in use while working. I have done a lot of house painting so I take my roller cover off right into the shopping bag and put in a tuppeware with a damp sponge if I need for next day. Rinse off roller handle and grid at end of day to air dry. Slip the cover back on next day.

Thanks Leah. You answered my question. I bought 5 gals and the roller grid and figured the only way it would work is if I poured some of the paint into another 5 gal bucket as there is no way to use the grid with a full bucket. I also like the idea of using 2 buckets to thoroughly mix the paint.

I've done apartment maintenance for the past 10 years, I always roll straight from the 5 gallon like this (full apartments I'll pour the paint into a 5 gallon trough and roll with an 18"). I leave a 9" and 4' roller sleeve in all my 5 gallon buckets, just wear a rubber glove and squeeze the excess paint out next time you use them. They make screens(grids) for 1 gallon buckets so for smaller projects trim ECT you can do the same with a 4" sleeve

I use aluminum foil to store my roller or brush overnight....and another tip...if you have paint that has been sitting for a while...and the lid is on TIGHTLY, invert your cans a couple of days before you know you are going to paint. It allows for what has settled to disengage from the bottom a little.

When you're painting using a paint tray, covering it with Press n' Seal (a plastic that actually sticks to things but is removeable) will keep the paint and roller wet for a couple days. It's also good for making a tight seal over a brush with paint on it if you're not ready to wash.

Nice thing about that paint grid is any little foreign bits will settle to the bottom of the bucket as opposed to a paint tray where they will be continually re-introduced to the roller.

if you are using a 9' roller like she is jut get a 1 gal freezer bag and put it over the roller when you are done. Then you don't have all that paint on the roller to get off. Just take it out of the bag and go
@SteveSinBaja
@SteveSinBaja 4 года назад
I have been known to use a plastic grocery bag to the same effect - roll out as much paint as possible, put the still damp roller deep into the bottom of the bag, then squeeze the bag around the roller and roll up the excess bag to seal out air.
@rooflurker6800
@rooflurker6800 4 года назад
Plastic cling wrap works even better, then put it inside the bag. But I always wonder who actually does this? A 9” roller costs about $5. A gallon of paint can cost up to 10 times as much. Multiple gallons are painted in a day with a roller. Why would you want to risk compromising your paint and roller by trying to be cheap and save $5? Especially if you’re a professional, getting paid several hundred bucks for a days work, client paying another hundred for the paint etc, do people really think it’s appropriate to be cheap and reuse a $5 roller? Obviously the advice where she says in the video “it’s ok to leave it for 30-60 minutes, if you load it with paint or submerge it first, is terrible advice and is NOT ok. The paint will start to for little clots and get a skin , little dust specks will land in the paint etc. Be a professional, when you paint you paint. When you’re done you’re done. Why put the roller down for an hour? Must be someone who plans their work in a sloppy way or someone who can’t control their impulses and feel it’s necessary to eat or take breaks in the middle of a paint job. 5 minutes breaks are ok, but 30-60 breaks will make your paint shitier then if you didn’t take a break.

I also like the idea of dunking the lot into the bucket at the end of the day and then drainng it the next. Since you'll have a few other prep things to do, just let the roller drain first and by the time you're ready for to paint, most of it should have dripped off.

Hi Leah! I love your videos! Very helpful especially when you’re a home owner with little knowledge about doing normal house hold fixes and such! I do have a question on paint splattering. I’m painting my ceilings and they are spiky textured. I have a nice thick roller but the splatter is crazy. I have plastic down and make sure the roller isn’t crazy loaded but it still gets everywhere. Is there any other tips you may know of to reduce it? Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for your time! And keep up the great work!
@tamaskep4902

Hi, the splatter can be eleminated using better quality paint(more gel type for example dulux) and better quality shorter roller nap(1/2 inch or 3/8 inch) for example purdy white dowe.
