Wood ash fire rolls are easy to ignite because the ash on the top and bottom boards allows them to grip the roll, drive it, compact it, and thereby create an ember. In contrast, non-ash fire rolling can be very frustrating due to the lack of grip. Often, the top board will slide across the fire roll and flatten it out before it even gets close to ignition.
Seeking a natural grip medium that is both widespread and accessible, I decided to try pine sap or resin in its clear liquid form. Today, I tested it and was thrilled to see how beautifully it worked to grip and drive seven fire rolls!
