How did you get into graphics? In the video you mentioned your dad using a type program to view fonts. Thanks for the videos!! I'm a dedicated follower now! Also.... +Bobbi Rawks Haha thanks Bobbi! Yeah my dad used to be an art director at an ad agency and so I used to always mess around in photoshop, illustrator, and quark express (eww) as a kid. My dad used to use Extensis Suitecase for font management back in the 90s. I've always liked using those programs and drawing and I kind of just stumbled into working for a screen printer without knowing anything about designing for apparel. From there I started doing freelance graphics for more indie clothing brands which I enjoyed a hell of a lot more than designing commercial art for soccer moms and high schools. I'm really glad you enjoy the videos and appreciate the humor. They always make me groan when I'm editing them haha! Filming more all the time.
Love your videos! Noticed when you first entered your type, you did so in the text box and then you highlighted the text, deleted the box and pasted the text. You can actually skip that last step by just selecting the type tool and clicking once somewhere in the document and then type in your wording. Click and drag with text tool creates the text box, just a single click with the text tool gives you the text solo as you wanted it to be.
So when adding effects like the inner shadow and gradient overlay, those become halftones when printing, right? If I am printing straight from Illustrator (no RIP software), would I separate my colors normally and change the LPI frequency of my spot black to print it out correctly? (I know you have a video on printing without RIP software but with one of the Illustrator updates, I'm no longer able to save as the correct PDF file. At least, when I tried I wasn't able too haha). As a graphic designer/illustrator who is new to the screen printing business, I've really appreciated your videos and have learned a lot. Thank you so much for taking the time to create these!
+Broc Baird Hey broc! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos! Yes with effects like those it will be printed as a halftone (make sure you have a spot color applied to it). But all of the other stuff you said is true. If you aren't able to print to pdf or postscript from illustrator you might need to reinstall Adobe acrobat. I'm not 100% though on that. I created the text box, put the type in there, selected the type, cut, deleted the text box, but when I paste, the type does not appear in the text box the way yours does. What am I doing wrong? Thanks~
