Thank you so much! We chose the Emerald Duration, semi-gloss ultra white - straight out of the can. Super happy with it! My parents have been renting the same place since 1978, and the bathroom's only been painted a couple times, and not professionally. My parents took my word for it to go to Sherman Williams to grab this stuff, and they pre-mixed it for us! 👍

can I use Matte paint over a flat paint? And should I use a Matte paint for the bathroom ceiling too? Thank you .
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 23 дня назад
Yes you can use matte over flat. And also yes you should use the matte paint like emerald matte on the bathroom ceiling as well as the walls. The ceiling in a bathroom gets exposed to a lot of moisture so it’s important that the ceiling gets painted with a product that has moisture and mold blocking agents built into it.

Recently discovered your videos and I have to say, they've been VERY helpful, as we are building a new home and to the stage of painting. Our builder prefers to use flat everything so that the walls can be touched up as needed without having to repaint a wall entirely. Assuming the price is right, we have intentions to use SW Duration (based on your videos) for all of our walls. All of our family and friends have told us to absolutely not use flat paint, but it seems that SW Duration is different. Matte is also very intriguing to us. Would you consider it to be more durable / cleanable than a flat? Thanks again for your videos!
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers Год назад
So builders almost always prefer using flat everywhere because it also hides the most imperfections and looks the best initially. Unfortunately it's also the least durable. As soon as you touch it, it's going to scuff. It is easy to touchup, but it is likely that you'll still see where the touchups are. Here is a quick explanation of paint sheens and where they are typically used: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DyKh80Yt9k0.html We use Promar Ceiling paint on the ceiling, Duration Matte on the walls and Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel on the trim and doors. Duration Matte holds up well on the walls and is decently wipeable. Few paints are actually "scrubbable". Scrubbing any paint usually mars the finish. I've reviewed all of those products on our channel if you care to take a look. Good luck with your house! Promar Ceiling: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-caIEPWxxTFk.html Duration Matte: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SGFB1n0ID7c.html Emerald Urethane Semi-Gloss: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZjENP6httxg.html

@SuperVassarBrothers

Duration Matte holds up well as long as the bathroom has a decent fan. If you're concerned about the steam or hairspray, then you may wanna bump up to the satin finish. That'll give you a little bit better durability. Good luck with your project!

There’s a difference between washable and wipeable. Satin will be a more durable sheen than matte and flat, but will still wear down if you scrub it. There are few finishes that hold up well to being scrubbed repeatedly.

Hey Jeremy, appreciate the video! I was planning to use Duration semi-gloss for the walls and ceiling for my bathrooms but I have about 1.5-ish gallons left of Duration satin that I used for all my bedroom/living room walls. Should I just use the remaining 1.5 gallons for the bathrooms or should I go with the semi-gloss? I was planning to use semi-gloss in the kitchen and bathrooms for maximum durability. @SuperVassarBrothers

Semi-Gloss is quite an aggressive sheen to put on walls and ceiling, but that's a personal preference. If it were me, then I'd use the satin that you have left. That will give you a good amount of durability with a decent finish quality as far as how it actually looks when it's on the walls. Good luck with your project!

From what I understand Kool Seal is a product used for exterior roofs. You can do what you want, but I wouldn't use that inside. I've never tried doing that, so I can't speak to how that would look or hold up. I'm sure it would be durable, but I'm going to guess that the finish quality will be less than ideal and the fumes are probably going to be a tad aggressive. Again, I have zero experience using that product inside, so take my comments with a grain of salt. Good luck with your project!

@@SuperVassarBrothers I haven't used it inside either, but I've found it to be great for many outdoor projects. The thing is, I bought an old house from the 40's. Whoever refurbished it really didn't know what they were doing. I don't think they used green sheetrock where they were supposed to and I'm trying to think outside of the box, on a solution to cover the ceiling and walls inside the shower area without having to do a complete demo. I don't know anyone that's used Kool Seal in their house, and there's probably a good reason but the stoner in me keeps saying "why not?" @KenTough-ez4lp 4 месяца назад
The Emerald is a horrible paint to work with unless you use Sherwins cheapest sleeves and brushes but the out come is too shiny and picks up every defect on the walls. Duration can not handle high humidity, especially in the matte. The only product you reviewed that can handle steamy bathrooms is Aura Matte because it is on spec for inside a SAUNA... You have to wash your walls heavily to get rid of leaching before painting or prime with Fresh Start. Never have I had lap marks from Aura Bath and Spa, it it wasn't so expensive I would paint the whole inside of the house in it. You also forgot Benjamin Moores Kitchen & Bathroom pearl which is an excellent product that has been around for ever.
@SuperVassarBrothers
@SuperVassarBrothers 4 месяца назад
That has not been my experience, or the experience of many of the other painters I know with emerald or duration. Both of those products are rated for moisture and mold. As far as it being too shiny, that all depends on what sheen you choose. Regardless of the product you choose in a bathroom, it’s optimal to have a fan running when moisture is being produced. I’ve seen every product fail at some point in the room was not ventilated properly. Bath and spa is a decent product, I’m just not a big fan of the finish quality, especially for the price point. That being said, if it’s working for you then have at it 🫡

Typically we use the same sheen as the trim / doors on wainscoting. That's usually semi-gloss. Usually wainscoting is on the bottom half of the walls in a bathroom, so going with a semi-gloss or satin gives you a bit better durability and it holds up better to cleaning.
