Use These STOIC Virtues to Achieve GREATNESS | Ryan Holiday on Conversations with Tom

When you think of someone being courageous, it’s easy to think of police, fire fighters, and military. Maybe the person that risked their life to help a total stranger in a time of need comes to mind as being courageous. But courage manifests in many ways than not just the physical acts that we default to. Ryan Holiday joins Tom to discuss his new book, Courage Is Calling. He explains how courage is ongoing. It’s about the moments and opportunities that are presented where you choose to act in courage, or you show up reckless without regard, or you choose the cowardly thing in that moment.
]Ryan unpacks having courage, acting in courage, and where it falls in the spectrum between being reckless and being a coward. Even the term coward seems harsh when you realize you may be guilty of acting cowardly at different points in your life. You’ve chosen to “save face” and look after your personal safety and benefit at some point, and it’s okay, we all have. Ryan further explains through his personal experiences that doing the courageous thing is not always self-evident, and that these moments will present themselves. This is a great jumping off point to exercise your courage muscle, do the heroic things and start living to a higher standard today.

QUOTES:
“That's kind of the idea of virtues, is to create sort of a structure that you can live in, that guides you so you're not again winging it on these critical decisions.” [7:03]
“There is no deed in this life so impossible that you cannot do it, your whole life should be lived as a heroic deed.” Leo Tolstoy read by Tom [12:21]
“History is not just a parade of shitty people and crimes and awfulness and hypocrites, that we are making progress and things are getting better and it's getting better because people were courageously committed to ideas and ideals, and risked themselves and their reputations to try to make those things more real.” [22:45]
“You don't get to stick your head in the sand and deny that facts are facts, but you have to decide what facts are you going to take and integrate into your understanding of the world, and what your imperative as an individual is.” [31:28]
“What do you do with the little moments that life offers you? Do you make the brave choice Or the cowardly choice?” [34:32]
“If the fight doesn't need to happen, it's not courageous to start it [....] deciding what battles need to be fought, what risks need to be taken, how risk can be taken off the table if it's not necessary. This is an important part of courage. It's not just, I don't feel fear.” [44:49]
“The thing you're hesitating on doing, the considerations, are usually very helpful in reminding you of what actually matters.” [51:33]
“Courage isn't this thing where you're either courageous or you're not. It's more a thing you do, day to day.” [1:14:54]
“If you think about courage as like, very rarely the easy way, and almost always the harder way, you can build that as a muscle” [1:17:21]
“The decision to quit, the decision to give up, the decision to concede, that's ultimately a power that you always have.” [1:20:19]
“Everyone tells you, it's a bad idea, until you definitively prove it was a good idea. And then the curse is that it looks like it was obvious all along.” [1:25:30]

I have not read Stoic philosophy, but have read several human development theorists, and discovered the empiricism of some theories, which I prefer as paradigms(Freud, Kohlberg, Bronfenbrenner, others). I enjoyed your conversation with Ryan Holiday on his life's virtues of courage, temperance, justice, and wisdom leading to greatness. I believe his "greatness" may be equivalent to what Kohlberg discovered as the highest level of human development and functioning (stage six). Ryan is able to face the racism of the past, but does he have the courage to face the presence of racism in American culture and institutions today? Does he believe America, the nation, can move forward in these virtues without coming to terms with the role of racism in both history, and more importantly, current American culture?

When I was in the hospital in Santa Monica, 3 years ago. My doctor saw me reading Ryan’s book, “The obstacles is the way’. She told me, he was a friend of her, and his book would help me as much as the medical treatment would help. She was Right!! Thank you Mr. Ryan

Ryan is right on. We live in a twisted political world where the most skilled or qualified person doesn’t always get the job or position. Instead, is looked upon as a threat by their superiors. By superiors I mean people up in the food chain, who are trying to keep their positions.

Very true, I think so many of people’s negative attitudes/laziness are due to cowardice…they have opted out of society rather than tackling to challenges in front of them. I find myself sometimes slipping then I remind myself that the alternative is me becoming a cynical blob with no hope or happiness in my life.

At 52.00 minutes, or thereabout, Tom and Ryan discuss the issue of when to know whether you're being reckless vs. brave...when hesitating can be a genuine consideration for the high stakes risk you're thinking about making or whether the hesitation is based on fear and survival-based intuition. At that point, I remembered something Tom said in one of his Q&A rant-type videos where he says, that a moment of fear or hesitation is evidence of stakes. That we should go in the direction of where the stakes are high simply because stakes are evidence of meaning and what matters to you. I can't exactly remember the phrasing he used but ultimately it highlighted this:- the fact that this decision is bothering you so much, or like Ryan described 'if it wasn't as high stakes you wouldn't have this much hesitation', means that there is something to actually doing this thing, otherwise you'd just basically just choose the thing that ensures your basic survival.

Whatever it is that makes you feel supercharged, kickstart your day with that habit. Establishing a meaningful morning ritual helps you start your day on a positive, proactive note. Having a structured start to your day instead of rushing to make up for the lost time also helps eliminate stress, mental fatigue and enhances your productivity. Don’t know where to begin? The Stoic virtues of wisdom, courage, justice, and self-discipline can provide a framework for achieving greatness by guiding individuals towards making ethical and rational decisions, developing resilience in the face of adversity, treating others with fairness and compassion, and cultivating a sense of inner strength and purpose. Practicing these virtues can help individuals to achieve their full potential and make a positive impact in the world.

People today are no less hypocrites than Thomas Jefferson. He grew up and lived during a time when slavery was legal. We did not. What moral right do we have to look down on people of those past generations for their failings, while patting ourselves on the back in the midst of our own hypocricies? Killing children because they are inconvenient and hidden from sight, is arguably worse than slavery. There is just no getting around that.

1) Saying people today are hypocrites and therefore cannot critique is like saying we cannot judge Hitler because people today commit crimes. Makes zero sense. 2) We have a moral right to look down on enslavers...because we know it was morally wrong. And so did Tomas Jefferson. 3) Killing children and hiding them is not NEARLY as pervasive, historically speaking, as American slavery - which lasted or almost 300 years and involved millions! And, by the way, children were killed at the hands of enslavers during that period - only they didn't bother to hide it! 4) To your point....there's just no getting around that.

I wish you asked Ryan his thoughts on the vaccine mandates, restrictions, shut downs etc. Especially in relation to Australia and Europe.

I saw a recent video about how nice Tom’s house is. As I get older. I find materialism unimpressive. I’d rather just charity my money and not waste it on a home you can’t take with you.

Virtues are for balance. Majority of the population strives for survival, wealthy in pursuit of pleasure or gratification, so virtues doesn't matter to most of the population. A miniscule percentage of people has the code or virtues in life, they are unnoticed and unsung. Precious things are not valued during the lifetime. Truth is never celebrated.

So . . . Ryan interviews the guy who is responsible for impeaching the greatest president we’ve ever had and then says “Put politics aside”. Okay dude, that’s not very “morally ambiguous” to me. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Love you Tom!
