I've been getting a lot of questions about C Channel over on Instagram so I thought I'd make a quick video answering the most asked ones and briefly go over how to install them.
If you're interested in using C Channel in your projects, I recommend the ones from Bidwell Wood Company. If you use promo code "COFFEY" you get 10% off your order. That includes anything in their shop. I used their C Channel and the Rampatec inserts from their store!

Have you ever tried aluminum c channel rather than steel? Aluminum C channel seems like it would be plenty rigid for most moderate sized live edge slabs. I would imagine a huge walnut slab (or similar) might move enough to stress the aluminum, but smaller slabs (like dining or coffee table sized) dont seem like they would be strong enough to flex aluminum c channel.

Hello!! In your video, you describe making the C channel pocket 0.25" wider on the sides and 0.5" wider on the C channel. But I am interested in the following question. To what depth do you make transverse cuts for the ribs of the C channel? Are you making the incision deeper than the canal ribs and giving extra space? (as on the sides and along the edges of the C channel). I have also seen that some craftsmen and companies recommend making a cross cut depth of 2/3 of the thickness of the slab!

@charlieodom9107 3 года назад
@@CoffeyCustomBuilds the forstner bit idea has crossed my mind, but stepping up bits is what I currently do to no avail. I always get splinters tear out away from the hole. I'm going to try to find some forstner bits in the right sizes.
@CoffeyCustomBuilds
@CoffeyCustomBuilds 3 года назад
Have you tried masking it off?
@tbc210
@tbc210 2 года назад
Sharp brad point drill bits can usually make clean entries without tear out. But if you don’t have any, you could also try starting the hole with your regular twist drill bit, except with the drill in reverse. First drill a pilot hole, then start drilling with your larger twist bit in reverse. If your bit is sharp you will often be able to get the hole started without tearing out the wood around the hole. After a second or two you can then stop and switch the drill to forward and complete your hole. This is not a perfect solution but it’s worked for me many times. Btw you can also do this when you need to countersink a hole for a screw and for whatever reason you don’t have your countersink. Pick out the right sized drill bit and then just drill the hole with the drill in reverse. You may have to bear down on the drill a little, but if the bit is sharp it’s usually not too difficult. This works fairly well, doesn’t tend to tear out the hole, and the drill bit doesn’t suddenly bite into the wood and drill your hole too deep.
@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 Год назад
@@CoffeyCustomBuilds I have been been very successful using a forstner bit but run it backwards (counterclockwise) first with light downward force. This scores the circumference first. Then drill the hole normally.

I wouldn't have thought that just bolting a piece of channel iron, with screwed-in inserts, would be enough to keep it from twisting. I thought a piece that large would laugh at something like that. Question: I’m told that a c channel in metal in combination with wood is a complete no no. The argument was that metal doesn’t give when the wood starts bending. Because of the stress on the wood it’s a guarantee for cracks. Instead the furniture maker suggested to use wood instead of metal on the bottom. This would mostly stop the table from bending yet still give it some slight chance to move so that there is no stress on the table which prevents it from bursting/cracking. Is there any truth to this.
@FastRedPonyCar
@FastRedPonyCar 2 года назад
No the long slots in the metal channel allows the mounting screws (which typically aren’t tightened super tight) to slide when the table flexes and moves. If you only had holes for the mounting bolts then there would be some damage as the wood would almost certainly be ripping the bolts out. The job of the channels is to not allow the wood to cup or bow.

Hello how long a c channel do you recommend for a table? I’m building a 29.5in depth x 59inch long table. Looking at getting 2strips of 17inch c channel for the table on the ends.

I'd go 18" but yeah that would work.

I built a sofa table out of sistered 2x4s and it keeps twisting. I have soaked it in hot water with towels and put weights on it until it dried and it flattens out for a few days and then twists again. Would the c channel prevent that?

Hi great video it was super helpful! I have a question hopefully you can help me. I bought a c channel that is 3/16” in thickness and the ends are 3/4” deep. I can’t seem to find a router bit that goes to that depth in 3/16” diameter. I’m not sure if they sell one online but I haven’t been able to find one. What would you suggest I could do?
@CoffeyCustomBuilds

Just do a 1/4" bit. You want some play in there.

I tend to overbuild everything and just used your code to save on my order of a couple c-channels and inserts for a 24" wide 80" long 1.5" thick black walnut panel table I'm planning to build with hairpin legs from Semi Exact. Are the channels necessary? I really have no idea (feedback appreciated) but this is my first hardwood project and will likely end up costing more than any of my previous projects so I'll overbuild to avoid disappointment. I found "The Sagulator" calculator in the Fine Woodworking archives and used it for determining if this long table will sag based on the thickness of the panel.

They aren't necessary but I really like the added insurance policy. In some cases they can help a great deal.

Great information, I’ve used C channel once before on a table. I have a smaller table I want to build now but shouldn’t be over 22” so I should be good I think? I will use the threaded inserts for sure. What size drill bit do you use for yours?
@CoffeyCustomBuilds
@CoffeyCustomBuilds 3 года назад
I think you will be good too! I used a 3/8" bit. Could have gone with a 7/16" though I think.
@charlieodom9107

I use somewhere between an L and a P bit for my 1/4-20 threaded inserts. It will vary based on the moisture content of the wood, the janka hardness of the wood, and grain direction. I want mine to have as much holding power as possible, but not make the hole so small that it is impossible to screw in or splits the wood. Remember, you can ALWAYS drill a hole larger!

Do these channels need to be cross grain or does it not matter? Assuming the top and bottom of the piece is face grain.

Hey, great video! Quick question - I'm building a 12 ft x 40 inch table and think I'll likely get some C-channels installed. The table has two 20" wide slabs jointed together. The slabs were dried for several years at a local lumber yard and that table isn't ever going to move from the environment its going to (which happens to be the same location as the lumber yard). Do you still believe the C-channels to be necessary. My inclination is to just do em, but id like to save the cost and time if it's totally unnecessary. Thanks!

I think they can be a nice insurance policy. I would personally do it but if you think they are fully dried then you will be fine.

Hey there, I have a question. I’m making a 3.5’ x 7’ dining table from a single 3” slab of white oak and I’m definitely going to use C channel (probably 4 c channels)! Is it better if i build the table top so that the end grain looks like a ‘frown’ instead of a ‘smily face’ because I assume that the slab will want to warp/twist in the same direction as the end grain? Therefore, if/when it does warp it will be pushing down on the steel c channels instead of (if the board was built flipped over) pulling on the threaded inserts and bolts. It seems to me the scenario of pushing on the c channel would better take advantage of the steel. Any thoughts? Thanks!!

That's a solid question. I would say down between the two option. Try alternating them though. Sorry for the slow response.

Hi I dont get something. You crosscut with the router two rather deep channels in parallel, at a mere 3-4” from each other. Then you mount an insert into the top 1/2” or less. Once tension rises in the wood, doesnt it just rip a chunk out between the two channels considering wood splits in that dimension pretty easy? I mean its just a few inches long piece where the screw and insert applies all the pulling force, and the steel of course cant buckle.
@CoffeyCustomBuilds
@CoffeyCustomBuilds Год назад
I don't understand the question
@hullion
@hullion Год назад
@@CoffeyCustomBuilds There's only short fibers holding the screw, so if the pull is strong due to wood trying hard to cup, how come the chunk of wood doesn't split out with C channel and screw insert and all? a figure would help to explain, but yeah...

Because of how small the screws are and because the c channel will be moving as the wood moves, the screws will eventually come out.

You’ll want to stay away from the c channels sold at HD. They’re hot rolled steel. These channels need to be made from cold rolled steel. I installed the HD C channels to address a cupped table top…didn’t work at all. Hot rolled steel flexes and moreover does not spring back, unlike cold rolled steel channels. Bummer I can’t find these channels with 3/4” legs.
