have you thought about doing a indoor bag to compare how the two perform against each other? I want to get back into indoor composting, but if I add another project, my chief executive will cut funding 🤣

😂🤣😂 She sounds a lot like my wife!! I haven't figured out the logistics of having the bag indoors since it drains and is doesn't hold its shape but maybe place if I place it inside a big rubbermaid tote? It would be cool to compare!! I do have two indoor worm bins...my Tiny Traveling worm bin: ru-vid.com/group/PLimznaPXKV09y9X94Q4aNpNzwUoLoVXug and my VermiHut indoor worm tower: ru-vid.com/group/PLimznaPXKV0_jVcRI9rI5xnbAFqNP3WZ_ Tell your CEO they are super easy to run and don't take up much room at all in the house!! My Executive Producer has me on a strict diet of 4 worm bins!! Thanks so much for watching & for the good laugh!!🪱🪱🪱

Hello Peggy!!! That early heat with no rain really took a toll on my garden but now that it is raining everyday, the luffa, peppers and some of the cherry tomatoes that made it through are doing better! Ice cubes are such a fun way to cool down the worm bins!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Hi Patrick and oh sensible one, great video as usual. Worm bin bag is looking good. You'll have that bulked up in no time with all that shredded cardboard. And that mountain of food 😄😋 Where did all those m&m's go? I bet Autumn sneaked out in the middle of the night to retrieve them 🤤😋 Have fun, Mark : )

To my knowledge the mosquito dunks are effective on any true fly larva. Nice strategy for keeping the bins cool, We are heading into the 90's next week, might give it a try. Always enjoy your videos Patrick! Stay Well!!!

You are absolutely correct for the effectiveness of the mosquito dunk solution against the BSF larvae! It contains Bt var. israelensis, a Bt that targets selectively the Diptera insects and only! Great observation.

❤️👍 finally seen my worms I dumped in my outdoor compost pile/from my indoor bin. I couldn't find them for the longest time. Until I flipped the chicken bin💩 everywhere!! Except in the veg/ garden bin pretty Strange. ❤️✌️

That is a little strange! I have them in the bottom of the regular compost pile that I use grass and excess veggies in. I would love to have aged chicken manure!! I hear worms absolutely love it! Thanks for passing on your experience Tory!!🪱🪱🪱

Can you do an experiment with putting in whole eggshells that aren’t blended? Curious if the worms end up eating it. Would like to see it in the UWB because I have one!

Do you boil the eggshells before grinding?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 месяца назад
I do not...in fact I haven't been using our hard boiled egg shells because I don't like the membrane that kind of clings on to them...But I should be using them. Water is the universal solvent so I would think some of the nutrients would be dissolved in the water when boiling the shells. But I wonder if it would help to grind them easier??!? The only thing I do is rinse my egg shells off to get some of the gelatinous material out and them let them dry on the counter or out in the sun. No real washing, boiling, baking etc. But is boiling them gives you a level of comfort knowing most, if not all, germs are destroyed, I would keep doing it!! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching Angelia!!🪱🪱🪱

Have you ever considered using moringa powder in your worm chow purely for bulking?
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 месяца назад
Great question! I have actually used moringa leaves & stems in my worm bin a while ago, but nothing recently. I should give it a try again since my moringa tree is growing again! I have not used the powder for bulking it however...it would take a lot of powder I fear. Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

Why not just have it outside. Heat is good, neutralizes weed seeds etc. Worms will be fine

Black soldier fly larvae good in composting or bad
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 месяца назад
I have never had a problem with them in my worm bins and they do a really good job of helping to get rid of my food scraps and I'm sure the worms also eat their frass (Black Soldier Fly Larvae poop) as well. I have heard of, but never witnessed, a black soldier fly larvae infestation where they overwhelm a worm bin by eating all the food and essentially starve the worms. I'm a little skeptical of this since I live in Florida where it is warm and have never seen anything close to this. So in my book, they are just fine if not helpful!! Here is a video where I show the differences of a worm bin and a BSFL bin: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OpBm0SA4Pmo.html I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

@Spyros_Mazarakis
@Spyros_Mazarakis 2 месяца назад
If your goal is a better quantity of compost, then you don't want them in your compost pile. They poop very little compared to the red winglers. So at a high percentage the BSF larvae store in their body what they eat. Also, if you have BSF larvae in your compost pile, the ammount of compost that you will harvest will double down, in contrast to the ammount of compost from a compost pile with no BSF larvae. It would take more time for the compost pile with no BSF larvae (or red winglers) to break down to humus eventually, but in large open compost piles you cannot control the BSF presence so easily. The BSF larvae are voracious, that's why they gain so much weight in only 7-9 days, and it's almost full protein! So, you will lose an expected quantity of compost due to the larvae, but also it will decompose faster. And if the pile is fully colonised then the harvested ammount of compost will double down in quantity. It's not usually a bad thing in open compost piles, but it also depends from the ammount of the larvae in the compost pile.
@Vermicompost
@Vermicompost 2 месяца назад
Great insight and I can second this!! The BSFL convert most of the food scraps into body weight where as the compost worms poop most of it out!! BSLF are great for getting rid of food scraps!!
