Another Time Traveler here, commending you and your work. Somehow my system ate my old "DuJack" aggregate device (It's an Apogee Duet with a Mackie BlackJack). Your tutorial led me through the set-up even though I can't find the instructions in my manual or on Apple's site. I use some of the Duet's 75 dB of gain to get an SM7 (vocals) and an SM57 (nylon string Guitar) up to good strong levels without a lot of high frequency noise. I use the BlackJack to run an AKG C414 aimed for the vocals' high frequency content and an SM81 for the guitar's higher frequencies. It works really well in my space. It's good to get this back. Thank you!

Thanks a bunch for this informative video! A few questions that I hope you can answer: 1) Do you need all drivers installed on all interfaces to create an aggregate device? 2) Which is better, creating a primary and secondary interface by connecting via ADAT or creating an aggregate device? 3) Can you use any onboard effects that you might have on one or all of your interfaces when they're connected via aggregate? How about when they're connected via ADAT? Thanks again for the video and anymore help you can give by answering my questions! :)
@AdamTrain
@AdamTrain 8 лет назад
No worries. 1. I would assume so 2. I would assume ADAT is more stable. I've no evidence to back this up but, in my experience, I've had things go wrong with aggregate devices that haven't happened with ADAT ADAT cable devices are designed to be able to act as slaves to another world clock, with aggregate devices they might not be and it can cause some headaches 3. It would depend on the device. Here I'm using the onboard amp modelling on my Pod no problem. So yes? Beyond that, I can't say much. Hope that helps

@AdamTrain
@AdamTrain 8 лет назад
Thank you man, that's really kind. I'd love to do more but I am a champion procrastinator. As for monitors. They're HS7s and I've had them for about 2 years. I like them but, honestly, I can't give out a ringing endorsement. Not because I don't like them, but because I'm woefully underqualified to comment. They're the only pair of monitors I own and I'm pretty sure the architect of my flat designed the place just to fuck with the acoustics. That said, I like them a lot: good build quality, nice sound and they look pretty cool so that's something? I tried a whole load of different monitors in the shop before I bought them and they were the best at the price point. I really liked the entry level Genelecs, but they were about double the cost. Bang for buck I'd say you can't go wrong.

So I just added an additional audio interface and am using mainstage for my DAW. That makes two total interfaces (a focusrite Scarlett 2i4 and a Presonus Audiobox). The Scarlett is the main interface (1-2 [FoH] 3-4 [my headphone mix] and the presonus is used for an additional headphone mix for my guitarist [5-6]. I've created an aggregate audio device just like this video shows. I have a problem though. I bus the click to output 5-6 at the concert level and that works fine, but after I save the session and then reopen it, the bus signal isn't quite recognized. Sometimes I'll see signal to that bussed channel strip and but no audio to the headphones and then sometimes I won't see any signal at all or hear audio. I've installed the most recent driver for the presonus. I've connected the presonus USB cable into both the main USB ports on my MacBook Pro 2015, and I've also connected that same USB cable to a multi USB hub just to check things. Each time it's the same result. I've rebooted and recreated multiple aggregate audio devices and the same issue. I've done a lot of trouble shooting and can't seem to figure out why this is happening. The work around is: every time I reopen that same concert I just have to rebus the click to my guitarists channel strip and then the audio comes through again. Seems like the presonus just needs to have a catalyst of a bus send each time to have mainstage recognize is properly? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I made the Aggregate device fine, the drivers are all installed, but when I put it into reaper, even if it is on the aggregate device, the inputs and outputs only read one of the two interfaces. Anyone have any idea how to troubleshoot this?

Hello, thanks for doing this vid. I recently had a friend over to record her singing and I realized, how unprepared I was. I was trying to set her up in my makeshift vocal booth, but I couldnt do any real sound checking because I only had one set of headphones set up. I really needed to hear her levels, and hear the music, and the mix , but I realized im a dumbass. lol. I have an imac, using logic pro x. I use the Bose t4s interface on my mac. Now if im using that device to monitor sounds, and vocals in the DAW. I was thinking, I could use a second interface in the vocal booth. Would having my focusrite 2i2 in the vocal booth work for the headphone adjustments? No need for the headphone amp? Im going to combine the 2 interfaces by setting up an aggregate device. Now I have 4 inputs, and 6 outs and I can use them all. Think this will work?
@AdamTrain
@AdamTrain Год назад
Yes it should work, you'll just need to route a headphone mix to the relevant outputs In order words, if your friend has her headphones plugged in to outputs 5-6, you'll need to create a send in Logic for all the elements you want her to hear

This is a great tutorial Adam! however, I need to ask you one thing, what if you connect 2 interfaces with different protocols (USB and Thunderbolt) and in terms of latency do I need to tweak the buffer settings? because I guess I will get the highest latency because of a bottleneck or not necessarily? thanks!
@AdamTrain

Thanks mate. I've not tried it with a thunderbolt interface but, in my experience, using both USB and FireWire is fine. However, I've never used them on the same source so latency induced phase issues haven't been a problem

I want to use the 896MK3 as the master interface, and daisy chain the 896HD to it so inputs 1-8 in Logic are inputs 1 to 8 on the 896mk3 and inputs 9-16 in Logic are inputs 1-8 on the 896HD. You can't use this method because the Saffire isn't plugged in to your computer Assuming the Saffire has an "optical out", you'll have to connect the Saffire to the Apollo using an optical cable (sometimes called ADAT) Some precision Googling/looking over the manuals of each should get you on the right track!

This technique is something else entirely. If you're using ADAT you need to ignore everything in this video. You only need one ADAT cable though. There should be instructions on Focusrite's website. If I remember correctly, you have to set it up in Saffire control?

In a setup with an Apollo Twin, Apollo Quad, and Presonus StudioLive, If I wanted inputs to be ordered 1,2 (Twin), 3-6 (Quad) and (and 7-30 StudioLive), and outputs all 1-24 (StudioLive), could this be possible thru Audio MIDI setup configurations?
@AdamTrain
@AdamTrain 6 лет назад
Evan Fitz Yeah man, should be. You just drag them around in the Audio MIDI setup to get the order you want. From there I guess it depends on your DAW. In your case, because you want different orders for the ins and outs, you might have to setup an aggregate device for the inputs with one order. I'd set that as my input device in "system preferences > audio" Then I'd just select the Soundgrid as my output device in the output bit of "system preferences > audio"

Andréas Sakasan Short answer: depends on what you want to send out. You could accomplish it via internal routing in your DAW. Just duplicate your 2buss and send it to the respective speaker outputs. But if you want to do it for things outside of your DAW, you'd probably need some extra software. I don't know of anything off the top of my head personally. But best of luck getting it sorted!

Sometimes when I'm linking 3 or 4 together. It's not a case of latency though, it makes some weird and unsuable sounds. Hasn't happened in a long time though so it could have been anything Generally it's pretty faultless as a technique, just make sure to monitor first

+Adam Train (OxidationShed) Thanks. It's like having to cocks to tic at the same time, eventually will get out of sync and cause sampling to drift and only bits and pieces get sampled. I have only seen a handful of audio interfaces that allow syncing from another 'master' source. But good to know. Thanks.

+RecordingStudio9.com you're absolutely right but, as far as I'm aware, that's what allowing clock drift is there to correct
