I loved this!!! Thank you for sharing what you know about the app. I have it downloaded, but had no idea how to go about using it. This was just what I needed!
I can't get authenticated! Ugh. One Chinese parent tried to but was not able to. She is the one who suggested I download it. She wants to communicate with me. I don't do social platforms anymore (FB). I am too busy taking care of my elderly father and grieving the loss of my mother. I am too exhausted and trying to adjust to teaching at night. Plus, call me "old school"...I'd rather do real face to face time in person with my family and true friends. Life is too short and too precious to waste on people and things that really don't matter. I won't "cross oceans for people who won't or barely cross puddles for me."
So sorry to hear of the troubles with Wechat - it's not the end of the world. Take care of your self and your loved ones - you are right, Life is too short!
TIm, very valuable video: may I ask you how do you get paid from a Chinese student, Can a payment be sent through Wechat? (*I'm not a VIPkid teacher, just an independent teacher )Or is there any other e-wallet available to receive payments? Thanks a lot. I subscribed.
Thank you for subscribing! You CAN get paid through WeChat ewallet, but you need a way to take it out and that requires a Chinese Bank Account. I have heard about Stripe, and then there are lots of other options - paypal, etc... Thanks for stoping by! I am making more content now about teaching independently. What do you teach?
I love the idea of sharing your SN openings and certifications. I've never thought of it for that. I have only a couple of parents on WeChat, but it is very helpful if they have an assessment coming up and you know something will be a challenge. I have sent screenshots of a slide so they could practice. Also, sometimes parents moments are helpful. One very stoic boy had pictures baking a cake, something he'd never shown interest in. I asked the parent's permission and saved the picture to use in class. Now, I use a mixer as a reward with him a lot. This is a mixer. I hold it by the handle. This is the power cord. These are beaters. Do you ever lick the beaters?
Hi Dani! Thanks for commenting :) I get it. Not for everyone. Just watched your GGK video on their email situation :( Ugh....VIPKid is doing the same and so many of my referrals aren't getting supported because of this.
Great information, thanks! Really appreciated your insight about WeChat use w/ VIPKid. I only use it with several of my regulars who asked, and still sparingly. Do you have any experience with an LP sending you an "add" request? This happened to me recently, and I'm unsure what to think or how to respond. Since I've only heard that VIPKid frowns upon this, it concerned and surprised me to get a request from an LP. Thanks in advance, and I look forward to putting your tips into action!
I have an older student who requested me, but I have yet to speak to the parent to make sure it's ok. The student is fluent and carried conversation well. Classes went very well. It's also a student I've only taught a few times and I'm realizing maybe I should not have given my ID upon request so soon? I'm a veteran teacher, but new to WeChat). What would you do in that situation? Wait to confirm with the parent? (or do you not add students at all? I know some teachers only add parents. I also read of some teachers only adding students 12 and up, etc.) If I teach the student again, do I tell them I can't add them now as it's too soon since it's only been a few classes? Completely unsure here and hoping for some advice! Thx
Hi! Great questions. It's quite different in China compared to the US in terms of those types of things. Students have their own teachers on wechat and I have some students who say their teachers send them messages and school related support over wechat all the time. I have younger students on my wechat but their parents know and I mainly speak to the parents anyway. Do what you feel comfortable with at the end of the day!
Hi! Im here again. How do we find ESL chinese students if you are not a VIP member? Is it possible in your opinion to find clients by psoting/adding chinese learning groups (this would require Chinese-to-English translations when chatting)? Im just trying to recruit a few chinese learners independently. Thanks
It's very hard to enter the Chinese market. VIPKid teachers are not allowed to teach their students privately so to get Chinese students you'd probably need someone on the ground in China helping you.
Hi Kim, interesting... I thought everyone had to be. Ah, iTutor doesn't allow it, yeah, many do not. VIPKid does, though, maybe it would be too difficult to stop at this point.
You mentioned controversial topics-I recall that some VIPKID teachers have gotten fired for talking about Taipei and Tiananmen Square during lessons. Truly a dumb move, IMHO!
I've been trying to get my WeChat account verified ut anytime someone says they will verify me, my account expires by the time they go to do it. HELP!!! What's a good quick way to get verified?
Ask around. Unfortunately I can't verify anyone, but maybe you can find a fellow friend with an account who is available at the same time as you.....it can be difficult but some facebook groups can help.
Typically you need someone to verify you, this can be difficult. See if you can have one of your students parents do this for you while in the class since the QR code only lasts for 3 minutes.
