I think everything is ok. The Olive is completely unprotected--but I am in Hawaii and I have no idea!! All the citrus is fairly well protected. Gonna be really interesting when I come home in a week and a half! Ahhhhhhh! Uffff. I wish it came with more snow for more insulation--
My father-in-law bought one of these fiberglass greenhouses new in the 80’s and grew vegetables in it right up until he died in 2010. You wouldn’t think the translucent fiberglass lets in enough light but it does. You walk in and it seems plenty bright in there. Every few years he’d pressure wash it to knock the Pacific Northwest moss growing on it off and it kept chugging along growing veggies like mad. Yes they are much more expensive. The 28 ft is about $11-12k delivered so $500 clams is a deal
I have a love hate with it…..just finished pressure washing and it is much brighter than before. The fiberglass is starting to shed a bit and that shedding collects dust and debris. I think I will be resurfacing slowly the outside like the hull of a sailboat. It really does create a great environment for veggies-especially the leafy green type.
You might check with a company called Solar Gem greenhouses. They sell a very similar fiberglass unit but they do gel-coat theirs with a special formula gel-coat. Maybe you can purchase their gel-coat? Here is their statement about their proprietary gel-coat *Gel Coat Exterior The Solar Gem Greenhouse is the only fiberglass greenhouse with a gel coat exterior. We use the highest quality marine grade gel coat on our greenhouses. The resin we use is formulated exclusively for us to our specifications. Both the fiberglass interior and gel coat exterior are UV stabilized. So, unlike all other fiberglass greenhouses and fiberglass panels on the market, the Solar Gem Greenhouses will not pit or get rough on the outside. They will not become a dirt trap! Our gel coat stays smooth for as long as you own the greenhouse and it does not discolor. Simply hose it off if it gets dusty or dirty. Your Solar Gem Greenhouse will always look new. We are the easiest greenhouse to maintain!* I will say that over the years my wife’s father’s greenhouse started looking a little weather-beaten and grungy but that really didn’t affect it that much for growing plants in it. Good luck with yours solargemgreenhouses.com/product/large-greenhouse-8-x-15/
Did you look into some kind of clear coat to add. I need to clean mine and re-coat it, with something. As the fibres are a bit visible. Mine is about 30 years old.
@2 Birds, 1 Stone, Backyard Gardening and Living awe, yes, possibly. Just apply sulfer on the regular. Also, I have issues with borer worms with my stone fruits. So, I do a drench for that in the spring. Good luck! I'm sure whatever you grow in there will be wonderful and bring you joy.
I just bought mine for 300 from my uncle. It's about 18ft long but it is dirty! What should I use to clean it? I have a small oressure washer but I need to use a cleaner of some sort bc it's been sitting under trees for a long time and it's now green
I pressure washed but…..I think for a real restoration it needs a sanding and then a new clear coating. I’m not sure I can get myself to do that as it is a huge job. How is yours coming along--I’ll bet I only get 70% light.
I was actually able to get it pretty clean with a small pressure washer. It does need some kind of clear coat or wax of some kind tho bc it looks dry. It also has little white threads sticking up. It did go from almost black to a yellow color. It's getting pretty good sun and my plants are doing well in it.
@@tipsnip7368 oh that is great-yeah my plants do pretty well in mine too. The fibers that stick out tend to collect dust and dirt more than the intact areas and those areas are due for another cleaning. Good luck this gardening summer!!
