Next video: how to hire a good divorce lawyer. :) Hey, I actually have a decent tip: Years ago I was looking to repair a (very common and very old) printer and found a guy who repaired them out of his house, and he did an excellent repair on my printer. He also had several sitting around for sale. My tip is, consider buying from the repair guy when you can. You get a tool that's in solid refurb condition, and you establish a friendly relationship that can be very beneficial. Not only can he fix your tools, but he's probably a great resource for finding that wierd part when you're maintaining your own equipment, AND he might be a good guy to grab a beer with while you exchange details and suggestions on your latest projects and watch your local football team lose.

Okay, watched the other vid, which puts me firmly in the "buy new" camp. Or maybe "buy used and bribe Scott to come over and do it"... 😆😆 I do have a Delta Jointer that I would love to convert...
@ScottWalshWoodworking
@ScottWalshWoodworking 2 года назад
After doing so many machine restorations, I'm starting to side on the 'buy new' camp as well. It's a great was to save money if you're rich on time, but I am no longer rich on time. Jointer's are much easier to convert than planers. Less moving parts.

For those in the US don't forget about NAFTA and the Canadian exchange rate if you're interested in Machines. In 2003 I bought some great General woodworking machines from Canada for 60 cents US for every Candian dollar. General Machines, made outside of Montreal and are\were considered on par with Powermatic but I thought even better. I bought the machines from a broker in London, Ontario at a further 20% off. Also, with NAFTA there was no import fees at the border. Furthermore, the Broker convinced me to buy a drum sander and shaper because he would deliver the machines to this side of the border in Detroit. Originally I only wanted the 350-52 cabinet saw. The deal saved me 2 hours of an 8 hour drive to Detroit along with the Custom's hassle at the border. Although there is no costs at the border anymore you still have to deal with Customs. After about a year and a half I accepted I didn't like working with the machines and sold them all and made money on the deal. If you're looking for machines and near the border, consider looking in Canada. Also, the older large, "green" General International machines are what the likes of Delta has become. Chinese. Not bad machines but they are not Generals.

This is absolutely why I buy new - I probably could figure out how to replace bearings and all the other things but for something that spins razors at thousands of RPM near my person, I don't want to take the risk of forgetting a set screw.

Bought a compressor and tank for $60 last year. Spent $25 on a replacement valve plate. Had to use part of a silicone baking sheet as gasket material. Still need to get a quick connect fitting for the outflow. I'm still below the "new" cost but I would have saved myself a lot of hassle buying new. I've learned a lot about compressors that I otherwise wouldn't have, though.

Depending on the motor, it would be easier just to get another phase from the panel, since the current draw at 120V would just pop the breaker or melt the wiring.

Some of the parts are interchangeable on this 15" grizzly planer: www.grizzly.com/products/g1021/parts For a 16" machine, the outfeed roller might not be available. I had mine recoated by a machine shop that specializes in rollers for printing presses.

does your motor pivot for blade changes? that's the only possible downfall of the motor-on-top design, especially for sheartak cutterheads where you're going after the cutterhead more often - some of the old motor-on-top designs require taking the motor off just to access the blade
@ScottWalshWoodworking
@ScottWalshWoodworking Год назад
no, I will have to take the motor off if I was to rotate the carbide inserts. But that will be a longer interval than a hss straight blade would be.
@guitarchitectural
@guitarchitectural Год назад
@@ScottWalshWoodworking nuts! well I look forward to hearing your experience - in my experience carbide starts sharp but are very brittle, so the inserts do need to be rotated fairly often. which of course is dependent on the volume of planing being done. what we really need are HSS inserts, haha!
