It’s not meant to be taken it so seriously. The useless man appellate is from his own youth as a useless spoiled young god, he was lazy and unmotivated, this drama shows their growth.
Because he is pretty much useless. If not for the FL and friends she made for him, he would probably never level up back to god rank. He was basically played as a fool by almost all the other immortals which resulted in the destruction of his sect and cast the blame on his friends even though there was no evidence. It wasn't until the truth was practically thrown at his face and forced down his throat he finally realized he was an idiot.

He did sacrifice his life. He never had parents to help or advise him. In fact all the good adults in this drama had gone off partying somewhere. The Immortal Realm was closed. Dong Hua had ascended. The Queen Phoenix was off meditating to look for her lost lover. Ah Jiu's Demon Queen was taken over and died. These young immortals were basically teens trying to fight corrupted adults who were thousands of years more experienced in court politics and manipulations. BUT 1000 years later, they were a lot smarter, investigating on their own about the truth. YuanQi finally understood why his parents sacrificed and he did too. He gave his all to his sect, his people, his friend and finally, his love.
@@Pureearthflower I'm a fan of this drama. The way the themes and scenes mirror each other in first half vs the second is superb directing. The acting was great too, even Hua Shu was worth watching. She was a different villain from most xianxia. I could go on and on! LOL
