Using a CX10 quadcopter for the first time.

I bought one of these little Cheerson CX10 quadcopters from an online supplier and when it arrived it was a bit frustrating to get going because the instructions were not in very good English. But I worked it out and it's a great little thing.
The purpose of this video is to save you the grief of decrypting the instructions so you can just get on with playing with the thing.
Things worthy of note are that there are two types of blade. Clockwise and counterclockwise. If you put them on the wrong motor the quadcopter will do very weird things. I recommend putting a marker pen dot on one diagonally opposing set of blades as soon as you get it. There are spare blades of either type and you will need to compare them for the way the blades slope if you have to put new ones on.
The charging circuitry is built into the USB plug. A red LED shows when the charge has completed. Do not leave the quad on charge continually and do not leave the charging lead plugged into it when it's not charging as it may run the battery down.
There are two types of controller. Left hand throttle and right hand throttle. The throttle makes the blades spin faster and the quad lift upwards. It's the only joystick movement that doesn't have spring loaded return to centre. That same joystick also does the "rudder" function that makes the quad spin on the spot in either direction.
The other fully spring loaded joystick is for backwards, forwards, left and right (in non geek-speak.)
The remote control needs two AAA alkaline cells to operate.
After charging the quad you will need to pair it with the remote controller each time you use it. To do this, turn on the quadcopter and place it on a flat surface. It's LEDs will be blinking. Place it with the red LEDs towards you (it's rear). Then make sure the remote controller has it's throttle joystick fully moved towards you (the side with the on-off button) and then turn the remote controller on and after a moment push the throttle fully forwards and you'll hear a beep and see the quad's lights react. Now pull the throttle fully back again and you're ready to fly.
To calibrate the quadcopters accelerometers/gyro put it on a flat surface and push the non-throttle lever up to its top left position and then move the throttle lever to its lower left position. If successful the quad's LEDs should blink on one side after a second or two.
To fly the quad after pairing, ease the throttle forward slowly until the quadcopter starts lifting off the ground. It requires a delicate balance to keep it at a specific height, so don't get too violent with the throttle lever. If the quad drifts in still air then you can compensate with the two pairs of trim buttons that adjust the effective centering position of the steering control.
After that it's really just down to playing with it to get a feel for how it flies and behaves.
If it crashes put the throttle down to the bottom position immediately. But if the motors stall the quad will go into standby mode immediately and flash all its LEDs to aid location. It will need switched off and on as will the controller for pairing again.
If the quad refuses to fly and just flashes its LEDs then it may need recharged.
Enjoy. These things are great to play with.

Oh man thank you so much for this video. I tried reading the instructions but it seemed too complicated so I thought i'd learn along the way. One of the rotors wasn't working and I got sad and thought I'd have to send it back and who knows if they would take it back but after a reset it works perfectly. Thank you!

I purchased the optional bumper that goes around the copter just outside the blade radius. It's worth a few extra cents.

These do have a protection IC built into the lithium battery with a high and low side switching FET and temperature sensing. The tiny 6 pin battery protector IC (in the battery) disconnects battery when the cell reaches 4.3 volts and also prevents deep discharge (2.5v) and short circuit protection by turning off the FETs in any of the aforementioned conditions including over temp. Quite a lot of stuff on the chip actually, just shy of being a micro. In the USB plug where the LED is the companion charger controller/regulator IC, either SOIC 8 or 6 pin. When the LED is off, charging is complete.

re: Charging. For mine, the LED on the USB plug goes out when the charge is complete. While I was learning to fly, when I put it down on the floor, I couldn't see the tiny LEDs on the copter, so I took a red felt marker and coloured the two rear props. Couldn't see them as red when flying but it helped with orientation on the ground.

Clive you chose one of the hardest quad copters to fly for your first time. Most drones today fly themselves but this one is too small to have a flight controller or six axis gyro. I kinda prefer them, RC piloting like it used to be!
@theoztreecrasher2647
@theoztreecrasher2647 15 дней назад
Hate to burst your bubble there, but these little things certainly DO have both a flight controller AND a (so-called) 6-axis gyro inside. Not even a combination of Chuck Yeager and Tom Cruise could fly them otherwise. 😱🙄😜

I missed mine quite a bit. first mod, increased range by drilling a hole in the transmitter and folding out the transmitter antenna. this worked great. second mod didn't work. two lipo batteries in parallel to increase flying time. it did fly but it wasn't stable due to extra weight. new versions of this now include a camera. I moved on to a syma x5c with camera

i bought one as my first quad, and found it pretty hard to control at first. extending the stiff, stubby sticks by about .5" with superglue caps gave me much more precise control. a protective frame (and having spare propellers) not only makes you worry less about crashes, but the added mass makes the twitchy little thing react a LOT more docile to inputs. after mastering basic and advanced manuvers in "expert mode" with that frame on, which took me some time, i really got to appreciate just how speedy and responsive it is without. hope this helps somebody. peace~

I just impulse bought one of these and I'm amazed by the quality considering the price tag. I totally messed up my first flight and crashed the quad, first into my ceiling and then into my floor. My reaction was along the lines of "Well f*ck! Now I'll have to buy a new one for sure." It just went into overload mode when it hit the ceiling and survived the floor without a scratch and I could start it back up again and try again.These little buggers are _tough_. Perfect training quad before getting a £1000 version. My only complaint is that the manual was clearly written by someone who doesn't speak a single word of English. It is translated with Google translator and some sentences are pure gibberish. This video is basically my manual from now on. =P

I bought a slightly bigger version with a camera. works outside on a calm day. the instructions say to calibrate the accelerometer on a flat horizontal surface, if the surface is not dead level, then the copter will not go up and down straight but try to fly at the angle it was calibrated to and therefore drift.

A few years back, I bought a little bit bigger version of this, with a tiny camera built in. I tried to fly it inside an empty site cabin - not a good idea! I bounced it of the walls, off the ceiling, off the windows and off the floor. Pretty badly bruised and ruined one set of rotor blades. I never did get it to the point of stable flight. I think if I took it outside it would simply go up and sideways, and disappear into the sky. I want a DJI Mavic, at least they seem to be capable of stable flight and hover with zero user input. If I can get one airborne, then I might be able to attain some semblance of controlled flight. Oh yes, and watch out, cats love these things and will gladly take it down for the kill, and run away with it!

i remember buying one of these little drones once, crashed it a few times, and eventually it must have gotten drone brain-damage cause the thing decided that “Up” was actually now 90 degrees to the side, so it would just fly sideways into the wall, and it wasn’t just a bent blade or anything like that, it would perfectly stabilize itself sideways as long as you held it in the air, but once you let go of it, it would just dive sideways into the ground.

It only lasts five minutes? Seems like a short lived amount of fun. How long does it take to charge usually? Like others have said, I think my light on the charger is opposite of this video. I ended up with a bad One, right out of the box. Got a couple of attempts to fly when it stopped working. One of the propellers spins non-stop even after I turn it off. Can't charge it. Tried letting it drain and charging. No Can do. If I leave it on during a charge the lights stay on and flash. Just putting this info out for anyone else who is or may have this same issue. I am currently trying to get another replacement one. Although, I don't know if it wouldn't just be worth it to buy something altogether different; one that isn't immediately defective or that doesn't only last five mins. (five mins...really?)

Thank you for the breakdown of different aspects of this quad! Very helpful. The trim buttons seem to be very touchy and I can't quite fine-tune it to make a strict vertical take-off. It seems to drift a bit in one direction or the other. I suppose the accelerometer alignment is the best method to help keep it still. Much to learn with this little guy!

bigclivedotcom I did the calibration as described and the lights will continue to flash while holding the thumbsticks in the lower left (left hand) and upper left (right hand) positions. Not sure if it is doing what it's supposed to do because it still seems to drift a bit upon takeoff.
@RHINO_Mk_II
@RHINO_Mk_II 9 лет назад
John Hodson First, set your trim buttons to neutral by pressing left or right several times, when the beep is different it is neutral. Then perform the accelerometer calibration and try a short vertical-only flight to see which direction it drifts. Use the trim direction arrows on the controller to correct for the most obvious drift axis first. After repeating this several times, it may drift slightly in the opposite direction. There may not be a perfect break-even point, but a slight drift should be manageable and almost unnoticeable as you gain more experience.
@RHINO_Mk_II
@RHINO_Mk_II 9 лет назад
John Hodson The accelerometer calibration should be used first to get a close approximation of stable flight, then the trim buttons afterwards to fine-tune the device. You may not be able to eliminate the drift completely, but it should get very close.
@jhodson
@jhodson 9 лет назад
RHINO_Mk.II Thanks for the tips! I didn't notice the "neutral" tone when I clicked the trim buttons, but I hear it now. I got it dialed in close enough. It still drifts a bit, but it is much more stable. I'm impressed by its stability despite its small size.

If any device with a lithium cell is left too long, the cell voltage will drop to a level that damages the cell. In that instance a proper charge control circuit will not allow it to be recharged as it will now potentially fail if an attempt is made to do so.

When I plug mine into the usb and turn the copter off the light goes on and when I flip the switch the light goes off and all the blades start spinning full throttle? I bought the cord separately mine didn’t come with one but I’m 99% sure it’s the right one what do you think is going on ?

I'm not sure what the current models are like. I've not tried a recent one.

@@bigclivedotcom I'm "99% sure" that the gentleman has either plugged the charger in with reversed polarity or excess voltage (check with a multimeter that it puts out 4.2v+ NOT 5v+) and has fried the quad board. That's the usual cause of motors running uncontrollably. 😉

My brother got a quadcopter like that but it’s charger was “house burning brand” The charger lit on fire

How long does it take to charge? How much flying time do you get on one full charge? Are the batteries in the copter interchangeable? Thanks.

***** No problem, be sure to use a high current usb port or it'll turn into about an hour charge.

Are the blades not label A or B like most quads?
@chdn
@chdn 8 лет назад
It depends on where you buy them, the blades that mine came with are labeled A1-A4, B1-B4 on the underside next to the axle but the spare blades I bought are not.

Wow Clive! moving into the future,next you will be reviewing the newest racing drones. Dont know about pink though. Check for hair wrapped around prop shaft when they hit the carpet,they tend to pick up and wrap the wifes long hair around the shaft,binding the prop and then it wont take off again. Nice review,wish you had done one when i had mine.The shitty chinglish directions are terrible on most cheaper quads.

Racing drones - the joke is someone has developed an acro mode firmware for this guy. Google cx-10 alternative firmware.

How long is the battery life?

If the light changes on the charging cable I doubt very much your assumption that it would overcharge.

Amazing video... Best I've seen on RU-vid in general. One question .... When you re calibrate it do you still need to trim it and if so how?
@bigclivedotcom
@bigclivedotcom 9 лет назад
After you've calibrated it on a flat surface it will generally still drift slightly to one side. There are two pair of buttons next to the directional control joystick. Nudging those buttons one click at a time should have an effect on the speed at which it drifts.

make sure when you trim the quad that its not getting dirty air from itself so go like 50cm from the ground

Best explanation for the CX10 that I've found on RU-vid. I just bought 2 of these and was having problems with them. This video helps a lot. Thank you so much! One question though. On your remote, your throttle is on the left, why is mine on the right? On both of my CX10, the throttle is on the right. Weird. I really appreciate that you explained that the throttle is the one that is not spring loaded. Thank you so much. Looking forward to going out and playing with these. :)

if the throttle is on the left it is mode 2 and fliers in the u.s. prefer this, if the throttle is on the right it is mode 1 and the rest of the world prefers this, i have no idea why this is. there is also modes 3 and 4 but i won't go into those since i have never seen them before. i was surprised to see clive with a mode 2 transmitter since he is in the u.k.

he also explained that the throttle stick can be on either side for left or right handed people. fail.

I'm in the UK and everyone flies mode 2 in my club. I guess it is a continental Europe thing. (bearing in mind I'm talking about fixed wing.)
