Using a HomeLink Garage Repeater. Programming an old BMW Garage Door Opener for Chamberlain

My Homelink would not communicate to my new garage door opener. Turns out they changed the "languages" the garage door speaks in the newer models. So for older homelink cars, you need a translator of sorts. The HomeLink Repeater solves the problem.
The repeater speaks the old language and the new language. That way your car can be programmed to the old language and the repeater changes it into a form the new garage door opener can understand.
Once you have that in place you can follow the standard instructions for setting up your car's homelink. I used this on my BMW and my Audi (2009 and 2007). Both work great after using the repeater.

Could have been a 50% shorter video, but the advice is exactly accurate and it shows a different procedure than the manual and what the installation professional told us. Thanks!

My tips. #1 A single homelink bridge will work for multiple vehicles and 2 different doors. No need to buy more than one of these. #2 after programming my homelink in my car to the bridge transmitter code I had zero luck getting the door to learn the car's homelink signal using the learn button on my wall mounted push button. I instead had success using the yellow learn button under the lamp cover on the opener. Just a quick push and the light next to the button comes on. Then you push your assigned homelink button in vehicle within 30 seconds wait for the light to cycle fully before letting go. Then test and it should work. #3 you don't have to move the bridge from one opener to the other to get it as close as possible in order to program the second door it has plenty of range to reach door to door. I just set this up in my 2017 M240IX and was able to open my doors from a few houses down my street like a normal opener would. Good luck. Chamberlain's instruction writers should be fired and denied unemployment. LOL

Putting this here to help others in 2023+. I have a 2010 Land Rover and a 2013 Elantra. I installed a new Chamberlain side mounted garage door opener in 2020 and had to buy the Homelink Repeater to get the vehicle’s Homelink to work with the new garage door opener. It worked great. Then we moved in 2023. I brought my Homelink Repeater with me to the new house and installed a new side mounted garage. I setup my existing Homelink Repeater and no dice. I called Homelink and they said due to a lawsuit by Genie that Chamberlain lost they had to change the algorithm they were using in their new garage door openers in 2022. Any existing Homelink Repeaters do not support this new 2022+ algorithm. Homelink released a new version of their Homelink Repeater in 2022 that supports 2022+ garage door openers from Chamberlain. This new unit has a model number of RPTRMC. The “MC” suffix indicates this new version. I threw out my old version and purchased this new one and it worked perfectly first try. I hope that helps at least one other person from losing their mind. :)

Followed your video instead of the paper instructions. Worked like a charm. The only issue is that I think the E90 Homelink signal seems to be Very short range and I mean Short range. Less than 10 feet. I had to move the unit from the top power supply to the closest power supply to the garage door itself. My Toyota I can open the door from down the street. Crazy

I have a Liftmaster 2008 manufacture date with the purple program button and a 2018 Audi S4 with side assist ....have to pull the 5amp fuse for side assist from trunk fuse box then program homelink with door opener procedure for all garage doors then replace the fuse. Liftmaster bridge would not work.....have to pull the fuse.

To answer why new openers don’t work with old vehicles: homelink changed their firmware in 2012 vehicles and newer. So any vehicle from 2011 and back won’t be compatible with new openers and will need this repeater.

Had the same problem with my 2004 Chrysler Crossfire. When I lived in PA it worked with the house opener there as did my 2013 Jeep, My house in Nevada has a 3 year old LiftMaster and it works with the Jeep but not the Crossfire as many times as I tried to program it. Then I discovered that I needed the Homelink translator. In 5 minutes the problem was solved and it works just fine. Thanks.

Thank You!! We got a new Liftmaster MyQ. Tried endlessly to program Homelink to my 2008 Lexus, failed time and again. Finally got the Homelink Repeater, still failed doing it via their Learn Button on the main wall control panel garage opener. After watching your video, I got out my step ladder and pressed the Yellow Train button in the overhead unit. 'Voila' Success! Thank You so much for posting this!!

I just installed my repeater to use with my 2005 Subaru Forester with the multifunction Homelink/Compass/Autodimming mirror. It's always been tempermental and took multiple tries to get it to work with my old opener that was still using the old Homelink standard. It took somebody getting into my car and stealing the remote for me to finally go through the learning process several times to get it to work. With this repeater, I had similar issues getting the included remote for step 1 to properly learn the car's homelink signal. But after a few tries holding the remote in front, below, in back, etc of the mirror, I finally got it to work. For now I'll keep my other Chamberlin remote stashed safely in my car until I am sure the car's homelink button keeps working. Then, the extra remote can stay at the top of the stairs for when I want to make a quick exit out the garage or taking something down the stairs with my hands full.

Basically any garage door opener that are yellow learn button equipped can not be linked. Only older models that has the red, purple, and maybe green or orange button can still be linked and its due to the transmitted frequency spectrum. That of course, homelink in older model cars is also outdated and isn’t equipped to communicate with newer model garage opener.

I built my house in 2019 and it came with MyQ Liftmaster garage doors which I was happy about since they were smart and I could control with my phone. Earlier this year I picked up a beater SUV a 2004 Lincoln Aviator to haul my bikes and dog around in. I could not get Homelink to link to this at all I searched everywhere for an answer and even asked on a few car forums and everyone said I was doing it wrong. I could get my 2017 Lincoln MKZ linked fine but the 2004 Aviator would not link at all. I thought maybe the module in the car was bad and ordered a used one off ebay. Thankfully I found your video so I think that should solve the issue. What a frustrating experience!

Ok, great. I just followed this for my B7 2007 Audi RS4. Got a new Liftmaster sidemount 8500 I believe, and Homelink quit working (worked on old garage opener, but not the new unit). So the only difference in the instructions here, were, I tried using the learn button on the opener unit and I couldn't get the Homelink visor button to 'speak' to the opener. So I tried the process again, but then used the 'learn' button on the keypad (have to press it twice to stay in learn mode) went back to the car, held the III Homelink button again, and this time it worked. I could have used this repeater years ago! Thank you

Hello, I bought also this repeater for my mercedes 2007. But i think your garage door opener is "allready compatible" with home link system. isn't it? I mean, you don't have any cable connection to your the door opener and allready the opener can comunicate wireless with repeater. isn't it?

If you have a Liftmaster 8550 jackshaft opener with My Q keypad use the keypad not the yellow button on the opener itself. I wasted hours trying to do it as instucted by the homelink written instructions. Also, understand the homelink repeater garage door opener fob will not open the door by itself so don't worry if it doesn't.

"understand the homelink repeater garage door opener fob will not open the door by itself so don't worry if it doesn't." Exactly. This confused me as well, I tried to get the Homelink remote working with the garage door opener first before trying to program the car. Mistake!

You said you programmed both your cars. Can that be done with one Homelink plugin Bridge and one remote controller or do you need two, one for each vehicle. I have two vehicles in same situation as you and need both to connect through Homelink Bridge to my new Chamberlain B750 Garage Door Opener. Thanks.
@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR 5 лет назад
It can be done with one. I used just one to program both the BMW and the AUDI. Once I finished with the BMW I went and then used the hand held remote trainer to train the Audi to the same signal. So you just need to buy one kit to program 2 cars (or more) for 1 single garage. Hope this helps and good luck!

Got my Bridge today and it worked exactly as you describe in your excellent video. Thank you very much for this video. I used it and all went well. I had the Chamberlain B750 MyQ belt drive model installed two days ago. Purchased Bridge from Amazon with one day delivery. I have a 2006 Lexus RX-330 and a 2011 Lexus RX-350. Both needed Bridge to make the garage door open and close. Determined I needed this after checking Chamberlain's website for compatibility. To emphasize, as you so well say, you only need one Bridge for multiple cars to work on one or more Chamberlain openers in your garage. Thanks again!

Nice! Does the repeater have to be plugged in permanently or can it be removed as soon as the garage opener works? Also, can it be used for 3 garage openers or do I need one per garage opener? Thanks! Great video!
@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR 2 года назад
The repeater does need to be plugged in permanently. As for if it can be used for 3, it would depend on if each door opener responds to a different transmitter. If so, it might require 3 repeaters. But if the 3 door openers somehow share a signal you may be able to get by with one. (short answer is I dont know for sure how it will impact your specific system. Id try 1, and order another if needed.)

Have been trying without success to pair Liftmaster 8550 opener with mirror-mounted remote in a 2013 BMW. From this video it was apparent that I needed to use the HomeLink Repeater to translate the signal from the car to the opener. So I got the repeater and followed the steps as instructed, but again no success. The first steps appear to go as expected but when I push the "Learn" button on the opener unit, the LED does not light up and when I then push the programmed button in the car nothing happens. Is there a problem in the opener unit? Why doesn't the Learn LED light as it should? I'm baffled by this one. Suggestions?

I just programmed my lift master 8550 using the repeater on my 2005 Tahoe, no problems. Be sure to push the yellow button one time, quickly, then you only have 30 seconds to program. This is after you already linked your car to the remote provided with the repeater. Hope this helps, Jim

@@JB-kw4ug Thanks for responding. I again tried to program it, following your suggestion on pushing the yellow Learn button once quickly, then pushing the button in the car to finalize programming within 30 seconds. Still doesn't work. When I push the Learn button on the opener unit, the little yellow LED next to the Learn button does not light up as it should. I suspect there is some problem with that opener unit, but I don't know if there is a way to correct it. Still scratching my head...

Once I watched this video, I was done in five minutes. One thing I learned is that the key needs to be on the “on” position and not acc. Otherwise, the memory won’t be stored.

@FarReachFR
@FarReachFR 3 года назад
Yes, mine knows if it is open or closed. The open/closed position is monitored by the garage door lift unit itself and not the homelink repeater. The repeater is just a bridge. (If your door cant tell that now, then repeater will not add it, but if your door can monitor that now, the repeater wont remove it. It stays the same)
