Using a MIXING DESK - the basics and what you need to know.

Here's a small mixing desk, and a description of its basic features, and how to use them.
Old mixing desks are useful bits of kit - generally tough and maintenance free since the smoking ban (they don't generally like pints of Guinness over them though...)
0:00 - intro
0:48 - plugging a mic in
1:17 - adding EQ
1:51 - setting up the channel
2:41 - adjusting gain (or input level or trim)
4:21 - panning
4:34 - "ONE, TWO" - why is that phrase used to check a mic?
5:01 - adding reverb
6:10 - line inputs (as opposed to mic inputs)
7:57 - using a dedicated input for piped music at a gig
8:40 - signal flow and busses
Learning about advanced features of mixing desks are relaitvely straightforward if you're aware of the basics, and most importantly, signal flow.
Enjoy, and I hope it's of help!

3 months ago we had a major water leak causing damage at our church. This meant complete disconnecting the sound mixer board etc. Since then I have been using RU-vid to educated myself with how to connect the entire sound system. I am currently acting pastor, Deacon, Treasurer, Secretary, Sound man, Bld. Maintenance and middleman with the Insurance Company, damage mitigation contractor, Asbestos removal contractor, and renovation contractor. I have used this to re-think the sound system, Speaker Placement, Mikes, Audio Viusal computer server. The one big ouch on the pocketbook was getting an Alto Wireless Speaker connection to the powered speakers. Previous setup had 60 cycle Hum, (yes I am ancient and think is Cycles Per Second (CPS) not Hertz of Killohertz.) I will properly setup my feeds to the system just as you have in this video. I now think TRS not Stereo 1/4 cables, XLR connections, Balanced and unbalanced connection. and TT rather then 1/8 inch stereo jacks, Thanks for this video

2:55 you say to take the slider down, but you don't say that all of the sliders should be somewhere near the middle or 0db so that you have full range to move them up or down to adjust them later for different songs.

Excellent, thanks. After purchasing my Allen and heath I noticed my ipad was quiet and gain was full, only used 2 channels Lastnight which I didn't think of before, should I pan one to l and one to r or both to centre? Thanks so much great vid
@DanBakerMusic
@DanBakerMusic 2 года назад
iPads do have a lower output level. If you use a stereo DI box (converting iPad outputs to XLR) you should find that the gain controls on the desk will offer extra gain. Yes, pan one channel to L and one to R...

Hi there-The Behringer stuff is good, especially for home studios, and the size of the desk depends on what you have as a recorder. If it’s a computer with a few inputs, then a small desk will do. Let me know what you need to connect and I’ll have a look!

Glenn Winstanley one cable into FX from an aux output on the desk and two cables back from FX into two channels on the desk or if there is one, a dedicated aux return (this will be near the master section)..

Question maybe you can help me. My father had gotten a DSP echo professional mixer. He converts vhs tapes to dvd. He adds his voice telling something about what’s on the dvd. Well with this new mixer his voice is low and he has to turn the volume up on the tv just to hear him. I’m think he needs a new mic for the new board.His old mixer he had no problem with that issue.So does he need a new mic if so what would you suggest.I believe his old and new mixer is probably discontinued. He is really sick and is trying to put some memories on CD to give his children to show our children. The mic he has now is a Shure 58. Sorry lengthy but he has cancer and it is really important he gets this done and right. Does he needs a converted mic?
@DanBakerMusic
@DanBakerMusic 3 года назад
Hi there: a shire SM58 should work fine: it’s a good idea to turn the gain up on the desk and speak 2 inches from the mic-that way you get a good sound but without the wind and popping noise from the mic. It’s best if doing commentary to have more level from the mic than you might think in order for it to cut over the mix. The other way of doing it is to use the voiceover function in iMovie. It also makes the underlying soundtrack go down in volume to allow commentary, and is known as “ducking”.

Hi mate, I’ve always been interested in getting a mixing desk. I don’t know much about them. Watched a few videos, but that’s it. Can you tell me what I would need to get set up please, i.e: Mixing desk, reverb machine, converter, speakers, etc? Thanks a lot. Paul
@scsidrum
@scsidrum 4 года назад
Hi Paul, it depends on what you want to do. I’m a singer/drummer. For my singing shows, I use a 16-channel analogue mixer (Behringer Xenyth 1622fx), though you don’t need this many channels at all - 8 channel will do fine; a pair of Mackle SRM450 active (powered) speakers, so no separate amplifier required, a good wired or wireless microphone (SM58 standard will do nicely) and I use an iPhone to play backing tracks. Once connected, it’ll do the job. You can also purchase a foot switch to turn reverb on/off if necessary. Basically, it is pretty much the same setup as Dan has, but you can plug the iPhone into the L and R of one of the stereo channels. The mics run through the mono channels (XLR connected). This setup is very simple. Don’t spend a fortune, but don’t skimp either. Hope this helps!

Paul Etherington - you’re welcome and apologies for delay...once again, it depends on what you’re using it all for. Remember the age-old expression “you get what you pay for” but in the case of musical gear, something cheaper may well be all you need. When I purchased my condenser mic (Rode NT2-A kit), I had read many articles but decided on it due to its quality without breaking the bank. It was about £180 but worth every penny. I was going to spend around £500 on one but my senses told me not to, besides, the Rode mic came with many recommendations. It’s warmth and sensitivity is exceptionally good for vocals as well as other acoustic instruments and makes a terrific ambient mic. I also use it for my drums.

the pan is opposite on video. and the popup tips on top of the screen... I can't read them and understand what you talking at the same time. So, I hit pause and youtube popups the name of video in the same place. So, I need to exit fullscreen, which is very annoying. By the way, that voice I've heard in the SSL videos is yours, right?)
@DanBakerMusic
@DanBakerMusic 6 лет назад
Ha! Oh yeah...plugging my soundcard back in quickly will have caused that one. I think I'll put captions in the centre left from now on: it's difficult to know where to put them because of Google ads... Funny you should mention SSL-I used to mend those back in the 90s...

Actually 'one' is not necessary to speak into a mic. 'two' contains both treble, bass and mids, so it contains all neccessary test frequencies. This is why most professionals only say 'two', and not 'one two'

I'm not going to beat around the bush on this. Perhaps it's just the way my University sets the mixer desks up, but I friggin hate them. I've spent the last 6 years trying to learn them. There are so many little buttons you need to press.to send the signal from one place to the next. My experience is different to the video, because unlike this desk, where you're plugging the microphone directly in and getting immediate signal, the one I'm using requires me to press a combination of other buttons, besides the obvious phantom power, such as the mix button. And every Uni or college likes to set them up differently. After 6 years, it’s really starting to get under my skin that I still can’t use these revered pieces of crap without constantly having to sheepishly ask for help. I’ve taken every lecture on them, taken notes. I’d have better f*cking luck flying a jet liner.
@DanBakerMusic
@DanBakerMusic 5 лет назад
Quite - I can see and understand the frustration with mixers - it's because they are flexible that there are lots of buttons to press. The number of times I've pressed a button, and a loud blast comes out. Luckily not so much any more!
@fawltystudios4831
@fawltystudios4831 5 лет назад
@@DanBakerMusic Dude, it really winds me up sometimes. Spend over 5 years taking an education in Music Tech, but still have to approach people sheepishly and ask for help. Like, as an example, why can't the desk come with two faders dedicated to the entire mix, instead of having to assign the first two faders to the stereo left and right? When the heck wouldn't I want it set up like that? Yeah, sorry man. I'm not usually this negatively placid on things. I just get this overwhelming urge to stick my fist through the blighters, every time I try and use one at Uni. XD
