Using a Top of the Line Fan for a Hair Photoshoot

For those of you that love photographing hair, I’ve got a treat for you today as I review what you can get from using a top of the line hair fan!
You might be thinking to yourself…why on earth would I need or want a $2,000 hair fan!? Well, just like on movie sets, there are pieces of equipment that are designed to do a specific job, they are the ‘best of the best’ and created for a purpose, so I figured, why not try this one out!
Of course, just like with any piece of equipment there are alternatives. You can use a leaf blower, floor dryer, inexpensive house fan, and even cardboard/foam core while an assistant flaps away to create wind.
So after much hounding by my hair stylist, I finally gave in to try the Reel EFX RE Fan 2 Turbo Bladed Wind Machine for Special Effects (that’s a mouthful lol).
Starting right off the bat, I love how you can adjust the fan up and down. It allows me to really focus where the air flow will be. The next great feature is the variability for the power of the fan as well as the cool “burst mode” that can just be a brief second crazy wind. Lastly, in addition to the actual strength of the air flow, you can change the beam, or the concentration of the air which is really cool. You can go from 10 degrees to 45 degrees.
So what’s the verdict? For me, I LOVE this. Is it a bit on the expensive side? Absolutely. But it’s a tool like anything else and if it helps you do something more efficiently and with less stress than to ME it’s worth it, especially for commercial shoots where consistent results are important.
You can obviously achieve the same results without expensive equipment, but that isn't the point here, it's about what works for you and if you feel the need justifies the cost.
Now onto the shoot!
I opted for a Savage Seamless Pecan background which is a warm but somewhat desaturated brown. The idea here is that the model has this beautiful warm skin tone and with her beautiful hair, it would all matching tones, warm and fresh.
Since I wanted a fresh look, I opted for higher key clamshell lighting with a large umbrella and a 1x4’ strip softbox. The last light is a bare bulb on the background to give it a bit of pop and gradient of light.
As you can see from the shots everything is very consistent and that is what I love about this fan!
👇 I hope you enjoyed this breakdown and behind the scenes look of this specialized hair fan. Let me know what you think of the end results in the comments.

Great video and loved the results. A point for viewers who might not have used fans on shoots is to be aware that fans can dry out the model’s eye especially if they wear contacts.

Exactly, that's why I also use a cheap on/off remote that I have in my pocket. Checking images, adjusting light... Turn off the fan.

Thank you for creating a nice overview of the options for hair shots. Highlighting that fact that it is a specialty tool useful for commercial projects was an important point. The foam core technique does require precision timing on the photographers part and can be hard to reproduce the 'perfect' look. The leafblower obviously requires an assistant as does the foamcore and many leafblowers don't have a variable power. Floor fans can be useful, but they are hard to target. One point that is probably true (don't know, since I don't have the high end device) is that models who wear contact lenses may find that their contacts may dry out fairly quickly with air being blown in their face which certainly can affect the shot.

Great video and much needed tool for your professional shoots! If you play in the big leagues you need big league toys so who cares if people criticize or try to justify the cost it’s what you need and will get the job done correctly oh and thanks to your hairstylist for the constant suggestion and your model is beyond stunning!!!😊👍🏼

Yes, from the foamboard to the floor dryer all those tools can help you get the shot but as you pointed out the ratio of perfect images narrow down and in a commercial set up time is money. By the way decades ago I tried the huge fans on a stand and the issue with those is that unlike with the Reel EFX that has a contained beam or air burst those fans stream are so broad that they blow away many things on the set. Thank you Lindsay Adler & Team for all the great information you share on your wonderful channel!

Soooooo, I've actually contemplated this one for a bit myself. After watching this I definitely see the benefits. I am all about consistency and because I do much of my work alone this would definitely contribute to an easier workflow and maintaining image consistency. I may end up investing in this.

Love you Lindsay but I don't know about that one. I have a $75 (3 speed) industrial fan and a dollar tree foam board LOL...they work very well. I've shot with both wind producers on professional sets no prob. Keep the beautiful work coming, you are my inspiration.

Lindsay - remember your bucket of water analogy for light? I think the same applies to wind! I use fog a lot in my images and so targeted wind is a must (as regular fans just blow the fog away :) ) and I use a workshop dust blower with a narrow nozzle on it for that. Like a snoot for wind :) Great that the Reel EFX fan has an adjustable stream angle - I've never seen that on any other fan! Now they just need to add a heater :)

I mean....What! 😱 I'm guessing if you're earning over 100k a year you could justify spending 2k on a hair blower!!!! What happened with a bigger fan that has adjustable power settings? By the sound of it I'm sure you can even get a facial! 🤣 And by the way Lindsay, you're lovely as always! True inspiration! Absolutely love you're work!
