Sorry about my neighbor’s leaf blower, here’s my latest Portlandia episode where I talk about some of the more ridiculous things I’ve done by bike.

Thanks for the video... great to see this comparison. At one point, i owned a second-hand trailer that was super convenient for lugging groceries,etc. But eventually I opted for just using two panniers and making a few more trips to the grocery store. I did notice there was never any food wasted this way... I was very careful about what I thought I needed. That was a nice side effect of just using panniers.

I use the Burley Travoy trailer and absolutely love it. I bought it to replace my panniers for large grocery hauls and carrying big items. It breaks down to a small size for storage, so that is ideal for me living in a condo. You're very lucky to have won this trailer!

I really need this for my situation. It’s really good because even without a bike you can still walk to the grocery store with this.

A bicycle utility vehicle....works like a pickup or SUV...Transit for shopping, work, and recreation ....Very good set up for apartments, the suburbs, and the country life. Two good options.

That was the best trailer review I have seen on RU-vid so far. Well done 👍✅ It does frustrate me a little when I see someone doing a test review of panniers or even a trailer and zipping up to the supermarket and coming out with about a dozen items from the organic section with a lite conscience and an equally light load on the way home. Fair dues to you, that was a real world shopping trip and review! 👍✌️🙏 I got a large sized dog trailer (€131($152) from Amazon) earlier this year so I can leave the car at home even more. (We don't have a dog but I wanted something completely covered, secure and self contained) Pack your large reusable shopping bags at the checkout as you would if you had the car with you. Just sit the bags already packed inside the trailer the same as you would into the boot of your car and zip it up. Throw any other loose miscellaneous items in anywhere, large or small. Nothing needs to be secured. Nothing will fall or get blown out. Most "cargo" trailers I looked at are actually relatively small 😟 which is another reason I got the bigger dog trailer. I spent quite a lot of time debating with myself which should I get. The fact that I can literally fill it up to the roof and just zip it up and go makes me happy that I made the right decision. I've had a full 26kg butane gas cylinder, 15kg of cat litter and a king-size heavy Duvet I got cleaned in the laundrette plus other miscellaneous items all in just one load. No tying down or securing, just stuff 'em in and zip it up. If I need to get a quarter ton of cement or move a three piece suite of furniture I have a car and trailer for that!!! And a tractor and trailer for even bigger loads. 😜 I carry between 40 to 65kgs load as a full family grocery shopping. It is a bit like pulling a tent on wheels particularly empty and certainly the opposite of aerodynamic but it's working out very well and not so hard to pull fully loaded. I have considered folding the cabin down flat when pulling it empty to reduce the wind resistance but on the other hand with the cabin fully erect it's highly visible on the road which is an added safety bonus for the little extra effort pedaling. There are no cycle lanes where I live so I'm mixing it with all traffic on the streets and roads. That's my slightly left field option but very practical and effective in my experience so far. And again, grrrreat video 💯

The dual use aspect of the Travoy is interesting and somewhat mitigates the cost in my eyes. Golf club dollies cost money, a dolly to carry your luggage or a cooler to some event or in a park costs money and so on...and I like that one can take it into most stores or walk around with it. It's not just about bikes. It's good that they have some specific bags for it if one doesn't have some that work. It really has a niche, let's say you bike to the beach, then lock up your bike but haul your stuff onto the beach with the dolly/Travoy. Just one example.

I got the Travoy when it first came out and it's been great for various hauling tasks around town. I've also used it to pull a bag of golf clubs to a course 8-miles away, plus it doubled as a pull cart while I played. In 2021 I did a 300-mile, hilly camping tour up to and around the San Juans with no problems, even though it's technically not designed for it. Burley makes a duffle bag for the Travoy that's the length of the trailer; very useful accessory for large loads of loose stuff.

I have a travoy there excellent , bought it for bike camping trips but it is so useful we use it for shopping and carrying just about everything , new owners make sure your tyres are medium hard and keep the heavy things down low , it can be a bit bouncy when unloaded but tracks behind the bike like a dream , another tip is put clear tape round the ends of the serial number sticker on the axle as it can unravel and you’ll need it if you have a problem and need to use the warranty, I can testify personally that burley have excellent warranty service

I have the Burley Flatbed also, I've had it for several years. It is a very useful trailer. One thing I always worry about with it, though, when I'm grocery shopping is leaving it on the bike. There's always the nagging concern that it won't be there when I come out of the store. Hasn't happened yet, though. I've thought about getting the Thule Courier, which looks like a great trailer which can be used as a shopping cart while at the store. But, it's so expensive. So, I stick with the flatbed. Great trailer! And great video, thanks.

They sell market grocery bags for the travel. Hpper and lower bags. I take the travel with bags into the store and do my shopping. I won't leave it outside, only my bike. Ocked up securely. Love your lifestyle, thanksTravoy.

Good to know about the bags! My local grocery store lacks good bike parking but they are gracious enough to let me bring my bike in the store. Pivoting/turn around for that is a little tricky with a trailer!

Thank you for this video. I am in the process of changing my life style to ride more drive less. But am really trying to figure out how I am going to haul groceries for a family of four. Looking into both these trailers. So this video video really helped.

I use the same trailer as your new one and you can buy additional bags for the bottom and top. The bottom is a shopping cart type. I works well on my Brompton folding bike.

Thank you for this wonderful review. I was particularly interested in the Travoy because of its ability to fold down. I have been using trailers for around 15 years. I bought a cheap one initially as an experiment to see if I could manage without a car. The problem with my first trailer was the hitch, which was a clamp style and frequently came undone. I then changed the hitch to a Burley hitch and problems were solved! My second trailer and one I use today is a flatbed Carry Freedom (a German manufactured trailer) which is great. However I have adapted it because 'flat' is frequently not what I want. I bought a big empty toolbox from B&Q (the UK equivalent to Home Depot) and fixed it to the flatbed using bolts with with hand screws, this gives me the option of quickly removing the box or having the box in place. I quite regularly carry 3 x 20 litre compost bags in the box. For shopping I have two supermarket type shopping basket that fit in the box. The benefit of these of a bag system is that they give added protection from vulnerable foodstuffs being crushed. I did wonder about the drag effect on each of the trailers you showed, I had suspect that the drag on the Travoy was less as it is closer to the bike than the longer flatbed, I suppose this only matters if you have hills. Incidentally I became car free about 10 years ago having seen that I could do my shopping using the trailer. I'm sorry if this is rather a long reply.

Get a set of front-panniers. Better balance and more secure. Quality is very expensive, here, but considering how many bicycles they'll out-last, you're looking a negligible costs, and they'll keep you from blocking your Travoy.

Hello! Just found your channel! I too am a rebel without a car. :) I really liked this video on trailers. I personally have gotten a schwinn pet trailer for free (!) from my local buy nothing group. It's great to be able to try it out and consider what I'd do in the future if I invest. I can haul a lot of groceries using it! Entirely fits my large grocery shopping needs so far. I recommend that idea for anyone else who might be just considering ideas, the kid and pet ones are very readily available and cheap used. I think indeed I will keep my eye out for a good deal on a next trailer since, like you, without a car it'd be great to be able to haul larger items like used furniture.

I bought a trailer and used it once. It felt like lead weights. A local hill I go up I had to get off and walk. The first time in my life I thought ' where's my car?' 😂
@steveshea6148
@steveshea6148 2 года назад
Probably had a spring in the hitch/towarm junction. That will sap a lot of your energy and should never exist in a trailer connection.
@steveshea6148
@steveshea6148 2 года назад
Instead of a spring to allow , a flexible yet stiff polymer rod ( "dogbone") is much better. There are other solutions for towarm/ hitch connections but a spring by itself is horrible.

Oh that's a very good point, if you have a hilly route the added weight can be a problem! I try to pick a route that is as flat as possible, but that's not always possible - if I lived in a much hillier place I would definitely have an e-bike by now!

Which one would be good for a teen taking a lawn mower from house to house?
@therebelwithoutacar
@therebelwithoutacar 2 месяца назад
I would say the cargo flatbed would be better because it would be easier to just plop the mower on, strap it down and go! I’ve heard of some people reinforcing the bottom of the flatbed with a piece of cut to fit plywood, although I’ve had no issues with just the Kevlar type material that it’s made with. But that might make it even hardier!

Good point! I've heard from people with sailboats that folding bikes can come in handy as well since they store easily. I had a Dahon folding bike years ago and would stash it in the trunk of my car since I didn't have good bike parking options.. thankfully I don't have to do that anymore!

Hi ,I have an electric bike and I guess similar situation , I also have a trike VTX , BY iCE....NO CAR. So shopping etc, I sometimes almost have to ride 14 miles round trip to shop, and food like u sometimes I have really to much for my saddle bags . So trailers has been in my radar for awhile, mostly for shopping but maybe for a tip???I am thinking the flat trailer is better for me, and I will have see if I could put these trailer on both my trike and bike??? Question :I notice u have 2 male bikes , can I ask u is that intentional, and if so can I ask why? Thank U Stephen. PS, I a American by birth ,but I live in THE NETHERLANDS ...very flat almost entirely and bike path, over all even connecting through Europe.
@therebelwithoutacar
@therebelwithoutacar Год назад
Hi Stephen, thanks for your comment! The commuter I have been using is a “Dutch” step through frame and I love it, in fact I need to do a video on it! I am not sure whether this trailer would work on a trike, it seems like width would be an issue especially on a bike path or bike lane, but I’m sure if you contacted customer support with a link to your model of bike they could advise you specifically on it. Step through frame bikes or ‘womens’ frame bikes are not as common in the US, and for road bikes and gravel bikes there are few differences in the shape/geometry of womens and womens frame bicycles. A step through is so practical and comfortable for commuting, I have a couple of mens frame commuters because I liked the color and style but they weren’t available in a step through.
