Tip! Reading children's books aloud is a good way to practice inflection for an active voice.

Great video Alex! I would add that sometimes in storytelling, there are moments you may want to make the reader feel that sense of "distance" or "disconnect". When we listen or read your "X" Passive example for instance, that's exactly the feeling it gives... distance. Almost as if the character telling it feels nothing for what they're sharing, or that perhaps they felt that way once, but are emotionally hurt in someway, so when they say "The contentment of family was felt" you actually sense the opposite from the character telling you that fact. Almost an air of sadness.

This is awesome! I LOVE the level of technical detail here with the sentence breakdowns. I straight up laughed at the part about diluting action verbs followed by a gerund. I do that ALL the time and will keep a close eye on it now! As always, thank you for the excellent content, Alex!
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 9 месяцев назад
Thanks. I wouldn't dare bring up the word _gerund_ in a video. People would unsubscribe! Ha. I'm pushing my luck diagraming the most basic parts of a sentence. It's a tough sell and I appreciate your positive feedback.

I use passive voice in a sentence when the actor itself is unsure or unknown and when it is general. Sometimes, I use it when the previous sentence clearly indicates the actor but it can be misleading.

Not calling you out, just reminding viewers that actual masters of communication do know how to sprinkle in passive sentences as needed, which allows the listener to draw conclusions as well as not feel “accused” when there is suggestive text or talk, while maintaining a mostly active voice dialogue. Normally this is seen as dialogue which may include passive voice switching to a story, in active voice as an example. Learning to balance speech as well as when and why is also important.
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 9 месяцев назад
Yes, I agree. There's sometimes a good reason to use a passive voice. The trouble is, people usually struggle to use active voice.

Umm, German is SVO, for example: "Gib mir deine Hand" (Give me your hand) is word for word the same as English, the verb order rules are slightly different; however in 80% of the cases it is the same.
@alexanderlyon
@alexanderlyon 8 месяцев назад
Thank you for sharing. I don't speak German, as mentioned. I read a couple of things online about how it wasn't an SVO language but I don't have first-hand knowledge about it.
@lupirite6373

@@alexanderlyon Totally fine, there are Many misconceptions about German. It's really a very beautiful language and actually pretty easy for an English speaker to learn. Did you know that English is actually a Germanic language not a latin based one? It has loads of latin words, but the grammar and more commonly used words tend to be very similar to German.
@wayneyadams
@wayneyadams 9 месяцев назад
1:12 I had to take two years of German for my language requirement in college and the grammar is brutal. They will put the verb at the end of the sentence at the drop of a hat. The worst part is figuring out which verb goes last when the sentence has more than one verb.
