A very deadly weapon in the right hands. I enjoyed the video. I liked the emphasis you put on don't pull a weapon unless you are fully prepared to use it.
This was very helpful not just for self defense, but for writing! Now I know how to use my friend's baton, and I know how to write a cool scene on where a strike would be if dealt by someone with enough experience to use a baton. Loved the "be damn sure you know how to use it" part. 10/10!
1. Collarbone 2. hands & wrist. 3. feet/toes 4. shins. If them strike zones don’t stop the threat, you gotta bigger problems then you thought. RUN RUN RUN away 🏃♂️💨
@pstarxxx78 true. I'm 50 with back injuries, l4, l5,S1, t2? ( above sternum) torn bicep, front deltoid, side deltoid, supraspinatus. Hips are bad! I can hobble away! Lol.
Thank you for adding your comments about retaining your weapon! I hear so many people talk about how great they are offensively but, like you said, what happens if they take it away from you? Not to mention, in a life or death situation, you could be wet, sweaty, bloody, etc, and simply holding onto your weapon can become a challenge. Add in the unknown skills, or luck, of the person you are fighting. Retention is every bit as important as the offensive techniques. Just my humble opinion.
Thank you for sharing. I'm a 64yo trucker with almost no time to train. I'll go look for the training on the site as suggested. I've used a baton for self defense before because I felt my life was in jeopardy.
As an often unarmed S/G, I always carry a 6 cell Mag-Lite as a back up. If someone ever gets my ASP off me, they have to contend with the flashlight butt striking them in the gut or chest area, the flashlight also has an after market side handle attached.
I started training in FMA a little over a year ago when I witnessed a 5 on 1 assault in downtown of my city. I train one of those styles that uses a lot of largo mano because my school is more about training the art and teaching the history of it and why we use the mechanics that we do. It's more of a "battlefield" mentality that we train with and consider the other "soldier" is armed with a bolo just like what you have. We don't necessarily train these self defense, street fighting type of applications that you show here, but there are still applications for it. The largo range you showed can be effective when paired with the footwork training that we do. This way, we stay at a distance, move around A LOT to avoid them grabbing your stick/baton to use it against you. We have some people there who have tried balintawak and like what we do better, and then I hear people who train closer range styles and like that better. The "right or wrong" idea is completely subjective to the situation you can find yourself in. This is why I started training a lesser known style of Arnis a few months ago which is more close range and more empty hand emphasis. It strongly think it's good to know both, but if I deploy my baton (because I do carry one occassionally), I will be using my footwork and staying at long range, because I am envisioning that 5 on 1 attack I saw and always want to be prepared for multiple attackers. If they get too close, then I will switch to my close range training. Then if they do take it from me and start using it, I know my close range training to be able to disarm them and retake my weapon. Gotta know both, just my opinion.
I suggest you read "meditations on violence" Excelent book on the topic. I only have little expirience of mma training(1 year). But I think there is no way of fighting 5 able bodied males who arent drunk or otherwise intoxicated. You really have to be an expert in looking dangerous and making people scared to fight more then one person. Obviously I am not talking about more serious weapons like guns or swords or even pepper based weapons. These obviously enable you to fight multiple oponents. And on a side note, I dont mean that there is absolutly no way to win a fight against multiple atackers, its just that your chances are so slim that preparing for such a sitation is a waste of time.
Don't forget.., the butt/pommel of the handle to the bridge of the nose works too. It's quick, subtle and very effective because opponent instinctively expects strikes to come from shaft only. Not the handle.
Thank you, very helpful. I work from home and have a 40 percent hearing loss. When my dog starts barking, I grab my baton. Now I know how best to use it. I wish there were more self defense techniques for hearing impaired/disabled people...just a thought, as we are usually targets...thanks again..
This is exactly why I started looking online today. I fought full KO kickboxing for yrs when younger. I am 63 and disabled losing the use of walking steady, developing neuropathy in rt foot and need double knee replacements. I'm a mess and been stabbed recently due to not being able to fully defend myself, strangely enough I carry concealed gun but didn't want to kill the person so I never pulled it out. Perhaps, shame on me. I'm looking for Baton to purchase and lessons. I TOTALLY AGREE with you my friend, there definitely needs to be more or any kind of self defense for disabled people. We are a target. Most of all I can no longer protect my family or strangers if I see someone being attacked, which I always was able to do. Have a Blessed Day.
Here in Australia the use of a baton a strike to the knee is definitely a go to strike area for police. Anywhere on the limbs is fair game, a good strike to the patella usually ends the threat quick.
Unfortunately an expandable baton is a restricted weapon. Carrying anything for the purpose of self defence is illegal here. If you use force for self defence you are considered guilty until proven innocent. A real pro crim culture. Weak politicians and a castrated woke Police force across all states. Disgraceful.
Clothing is also a big consideration when using an ASP. Without solid contact, with solid tissues that’ll be damaged, layers of clothing can inhibit effectiveness. May have to transition to other areas of susceptible tissues….💪🤙
Great video!! Thanks for that!! The use of force!! Gotta love it!! At the end of the day, it's all about getting home safe, you gotta do what you gotta do. That being said, you pull a button out, and the guy pulls a gun... guess what, you messed up. Minus the gun, you have to account for your actions in court after the fact... But the famous reply is " I'd rather be Judged by 12 than carried by 6""
Thank you for sharing you made valid points regarding your safety and the possibility of the criminal trying to sue one. As a keyboard warrior I would like to see more techniques for those bound to wheelchairs and unable to stand up. Greatly appreciate your time and work and if possible giving this subject of defending one self and or family member from such a condition. By the way living in california a draconian state it is illegal to carry a baton or night stick. GOD bless you.
in uk its an offensive weapon to carry. but i'm in the market for a really sturdy selfi stick if you see something like this with a 1/4 inch mount.....
Thank you Sir, great video. in my country its illegal to carry a baton (like some commentors also mentioned), so I apply what Sherlock Holmes said 'you hide a needle not in a haystack, but among other needles': carry a telescopic walking stick, sturdy umbrella, hiking stick or sturdy torch or a small lock on a short chain (for your gate or bike if asked) etc. Stay safe everyone. 👍😉
00:50 - 01:01 At last some practical perspective. See the second paragraph. You will find very few videos that tell you the absolute basics of how to engage when it’s a question of fight or flight. These guys are experts and so they can identify their targets and hit them with precision. This takes years of knowledge and practice but seems so easy on the screen. Almost all strikes are to the head and upper body and therefore also look impressive. These exercises are for the Dojo, not for street emergencies. Hitting others in the face is definitely not recommended - these days there are always those with phone cameras and that sort of evidence if the police turn up will always go against you initially - although it’s a natural instinct when we give in to our emotions instead of keeping focused on the main aim and that is to injure your opponent correctly so as to then go to the next phase which is flight. Dropping someone to the floor and then going down with them is also a no-no in the street, the most unsuspected individuals could join in and speed of execution is your goal. Now, the most important thing to keep in mind is that someone with an injured leg can’t run. This must be your priority: neutralize the leg. One leg is enough and the advantage is that there are two of them, versus one head, so you can choose whichever side suits you best. When confronted raise the arms as if to offer surrender. This catches the opponent off guard, keeps your head protected and also acts as an upper body stabilizer for the kick. Don’t kick with your toes out in front, much the same as with the hand; fingers and toes break with relative ease, that’s why punching isn’t recommended and open palm strikes are, use the heel instead. A sideways motion catching and displacing the kneecap is ideal. If you miss, you’ll at least have made the leg double sideways and if not breaking something is at least extremely painful; a straight blow to the knee will make the opponent feel sick and if hard enough will have them out of the game for long enough for you to get away. Also, on camera, it doesn’t show you to be either an expert or willing to inflict purposeful injury, rather a clumsy, spur of the moment way out. Now start practising at home so your “clumsiness” is highly effective. Like the man said, the more you do it, the better at it you are.
Forbidden weapon in Germany and many other countries! If I had one and use it, they put ME into jail. They wouldn't ask if the opponent was the agressor. That's the sad reality.
I used to carry one when I was a bike messenger in Seattle 30 years ago. I had to put it out a couple of times, and that was as far as the aggression went. the instigators backed down
If someone is showing hands and approaching that point of violence, you can snap that baton exactly where he’s showing in the video with out having to actually swing it! If you snap it quick on the bone of someone’s arm, regardless of their size, they will rethink messing with you any further! It can humble a man very quickly with minimal legal trouble!
I always used this straight from unexpanded by the time you strike it is open and the assailant does not see it coming. don't bounce it but hold the hit on as you strike for a split second for a greater effect.
You must have brought a cheap one, ASP Batons are literally unbreakable. S&W makes some that are pretty close in quality. Yeah those brands are an investment (on the low end $60 - $100 ), but they are worth the price.
Very good info on self defense. I'm very very all for self defense I have two daughters, and with the way this beautiful world has become they are very much trained in self defense in many ways. I showed them a few kinds of knuckles, full finger and single finger what's your honest opinion about them carrying that type of defense ? Yes I very much understand the laws and yes they do to about those. I much rather my kids be safe then me having my worst nightmare come to reality.
0:22 don't laugh, but such a sad situation happened to me... to my wife, that is. But fortunately, everything ended well, my wife didn't lose any teeth - while opening it, it simply fell out of my hand. Damn carpal tunnel syndrome!!!
I am a licensed security professional and am an instructor level in FMA and also took a class on the ASP baton and have certification by ASP with it. What you are describing is a self defense, life or death situation. Like a surprise kind of attack. If someone who was unarmed was just posturing threatening toward you and you smack him in a serious damaging area like the face or on the knee to shatter it on purpose you will get charged with assault and with a deadly weapon. You can only use the similar force they are giving you. That is why cops and security guards are trained to hit the thigh and side of arm. Obviously if the guy is holding a knife then you can hit him in the head and maybe even kill them in self defense and you are not committing a crime. But you have to be able to articulate and justify with your words why you did what you did and survive a jury. But if you can articulate why you hit the guy where you did then you should be fine. But if you just hit the guy's knee you should say you were trying to hit his thigh but he positioned himself to where it hit his knee. And yeah I agree never pull out a baton unless you plan to use it. Nobody should even see it before you pull it out. But if you live in a state like mine it is illegal to conceal a baton so you must open carry it. Really dumb laws in Oregon. But do not pull it out unless you need to use it at that moment or it is very dark and some threatening guy in the distance is walking up to you. Do not extend it but hold it in your hand and do not display it until the attack. Kali/Arnis/Eskrima works really good with the baton and you can even jab with it and do tons of cool stuff. I think the ASP baton is a very good self defense weapon and just something to keep around. I think that Hard 2 Hurt guy is an idiot.
I do agree with some of this video, however, we were taught to hit muscle areas..... As not to do permanent damage. Not sure if learning thru a RU-vid video is the best thing when you are in front of a judge explaining why you just permanently crippled someone. Also, the instructor states to get in close? Huh? The idea of a Baton is to keep distance. Getting in close lowers the effect of the swing. And a collapsible Baton is NOT a martial arts weapon. It as actually a creation from the old PR24 Police Baton, (The Baton with a handle). Motorcycle cops wanted a smaller baton, hence the PR24 collapsible was designed and ASP created the collapsible Baton without the Handle. It was an interesting video, but, definitely not an idea I would be teaching to anyone.
why would you buy a baton for break-ins? literally the only advantage of the expandable baton is that it can be carried around. better get a machete or a gun to defend your home edit: and a super bright flashlight
@@Kit-kk9cbAre you insane lil bro? 😂😂😂 How are you gonna use a MACHETE for defence? Any strike with that can be lethal and the law rightfully is not gonna protect you for that. The baton is much safer and practical.
@@1997lordofdoom you use it by hacking and stabbing. in a home defense situation the law will protect you if you hurt/kill someone in self defense edit: also, if you think that a baton like the one shown in the video will keep someone from hurting or killing you, especially with a knife, then you have probably never held the thing in hand. those batons are thin metal sticks with barely any weight to them and a tiny tip which in some countries is even just made of plastic. the only thing you can realistically do with them is maybe hit somebody's knife out of their hand. that's it. the hit to the knee/thigh he shows in the video will barely do any damage, even if it's well-executed. on adrenaline you don't really notice the pain. plus if you go in close enough to properly hit the knee you will expose your throat, which is not a great idea if the attacker has a knife
As a Baton Instructor, I agree. I use the GR8 because, it just makes sense to me. I like the Asp. But, they are prohibited tools..The GR8 is not and, it's a tactical baton..The PR-24 is prohibited for all civilians too. A Civilian can get arrested for both..So, I can carry the GR8 for on or off duty. It's legal.
One should be very sure of the law regarding collapsible batons. For example, on the US East Coast, they seem to be illegal for self-defense entirely or outside of one's home, in NY, NJ and PA.
In India too carrying it maybe counterproductive with police. We’re supposed to answer their umpeen questions. They may book the carrier to ‘avoid possible violence’, funny.🌿
My theory is this wepon is illegal in most places because it's simple to swing at the head and kill people. I think many of us under pressure might just swing for the fences and merk the attacker and it's weird to say but I think you could kill faster with an ASP than a knife. I know I said a lot there but understand I do carry wepons for self defense and that one has always been a hot topic because of the legality surrounding headshots.
As with any weapon, practical training is key. Yes striking the head raises the chances of killing the individual, but you could easily do that with any striking weapon including a good solid stick. I've always carried an ASP, and received training in it from my security training trade training while attending Job Corps and from working security and corrections. A collapsible baton in the hands of an untrained defender is a liability for the defender. Which is why this video is a gem in giving some of the basics I and other experienced baton carriers will recognize and affirm.
I’ve taken the PPCT certification course…places you are supposed to hit: Common Peroneal nerve, Femoral nerve, Radial nerve, Ulnar nerve. Places you are NOT supposed to hit: Head, collarbone, elbow, wrist, knee, etc. :)
I go along with the instructions that came with my baton. Soft spots. You really don’t want to seriously injure anyone. Soft spots are very painful…and dissuasive. Check you state law for legality.
@Dead Hand OK, yeah, sure bruh. If that is all you have go for it. I wouldn't recommend it, but something is better than nothing. If you spray me in my face all you are going to do is piss me off and won't do anything to stop me but maybe for a weaker human it MIGHT work.
@@HoratioWalls In Ireland it's straight up prohibited/illegal to carry a baton, or any other kind of self defense tool such as a taser, pepperspray, or mace.
Pain in the utter ass to put away but that's just my opinion when I checked a friend's out. Other than in Cali, you're good though. Glad to see somebody explaining it, because even my friend thought it was his be all, end all. Not thinking about how to tactically use the tool and not let it become used against em if he just swung the thing around like a madman.
@@hobowithawaterpistol9070 Rather than slamming it down hard, tap it a couple of times to break the friction lock. You should hear it rattle; then close it. It makes it a lot easier. 😎
Wait, so a person can pull a knife and try to rob you and if your baton happens to hit them in the eye and remove it, you could be sued? Or am I mishearing that?
I've seen enough videos where Police Officers use these and it's almost a comedy show in the way they use them. Good point, "what if it's taken away", and to that I say, you also must train self-defense against these weapons, and take aways or how to retrieve them if they are yours'. Bottom line, I'm not chasing a tool when I can attack the actual weapon which is the attacker. I would also like to see videos on how these batons are used for joint locks and body control. P.S., I live in NY, so anything that you would like to carry for self-defense is illegal.
@@Kit-kk9cb It will definitely give you a three or four second jump on the attacker, but don't run, men, not all, count out run a woman. Use those seconds to beat the crap out of him with the light.
@Kit-kk9cb maybe none of your buddies can. I worked in several prisons. I can guarantee you- most people can fight with unlimited light in their face.
Don't forget the pommel. Learn how to use every single part of your weapon. That being said, I prefer to use a baton as extra leverage instead of striking.
Thank You For A Great 😊 Video !!! This Is Where We Are Today. If I Had Children, I’d Be Looking For A Guy Like You Before They Ever Made It To Kindergarten, For Discipline , And Self Defense !!!

Those are very much ILLEGAL around here. I Carry a cane-- and can easily handle multiple attackers with it--and close work is WONDERFUL with it. I had many say it's NOT good for close up work---well- those folk just don't know what they're doing. AS I strike with a cane-- well, bone on bone hurts- that flex thing on bone hurts worse-- cane hickory on bone-- BREAKS... plus the cane is legal to carry anywhere...no permits , no ammo (as with a gun) , can't accidentally kill someone behind the attacker (as with a gun) and not so hard to prove DEFENSIVE (as with a gun). AND the cane gives me REACH advantage of 36 inches-- and SPEED advantage as my hand moving at 2 mph- makes the tip end of the cane moving at 10mph or MORE.. I learned cane work from my 4th degree Hapkido work-- and have EXPANDED on it through CANE DO-- and the close up work is Sobreviviencia -- DESIGNED for close work and deadly.
