Using an old, cheap DSLR in 2024 // Canon T7i

Are DSLR's irrelevant in 2024? Or are they still worth a look?
Buying a cheap DSLR is especially tempting, but is it just a waste of money? I've been using a Canon Rebel T7i (800d) for several years now, so thought I'd share my experience.

Keen to hear what cameras you’re all using!

Thank you for the video. The whole world is applauding mirrorless cameras, especially almost every photographer on RU-vid. Granted, mirrorless cameras do possess some unique advantages however, the pro DSLRs that Canon and Nikon used to produce few days ago are great capable cameras for sure. I started by hobbyist photography activities back in 2009 with Canon entry-level models like 450D and 50D. Used them happily till 2014 and then sold them out. Subsequently, I bought used pro bodies like 1D Mark IV, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III and 7D. These stalwarts are entirely different workhorses from those I owned previously. There’s nothing my present cameras are unable to perform as per my desire. Moreover, OVF is a huge advantage for me. Every mirrorless camera suffers from EVF lag but I see my subjects and actions instantly at the speed of light and capture them accordingly. Mirrorless cameras are unable to bridge this gap by default. Perhaps that’s the reason why Sony A9III incorporated precapture option. DSLR can start capturing action from the moment it occurs whereas; mirrorless cameras are little behind. A fraction of a second is a huge delay for capturing action which is why one second has been divided into 8000 parts in all pro-grade cameras. Again, as a wildlife photographer, I do not need the eye AF at all. Because, the beauty of animals is confined to their bodies and feathers, never in the eye. I also use native premium super telephoto lenses for this purpose that give me great service. The highest burst rate on my cameras is 10 fps. This is more than enough for me. Never miss any action in the wild. I love my DSLRs and won’t ever part with them. Granted CaNikon have stopped manufacturing them; I really don’t care. The pro bodies I use can crank up millions of shutter actuations which gives me the feeling that, I won’t need to replace them in the next ten years at the least. Needless to mention, all my bodies have tons of shutter life remaining. Yes, dynamic range is Canon’s Achilis heel. This is why I’m contemplating a used 5D Mark IV in which Canon has made amends in this area. Image quality and color science? Absolutely no difference. Thanks again.

Many have probably heard this often. The most important thing is that you are comfortable with the equipment you have and can handle itBecause you're not an expert just because you have a $10 000 camera in your hand if you don't know how to use it . I've been using Panasonic bridge cameras since 2008 and I'm still learning new things A good thing is that they used the same battery since 2012 anyway in many models. And today I use my second FZ300 series that came in 2015 and even bought a third because they are cheaper than today's mobile phones. and then I dare to film with them in any weather. but therefore it wears a lot on the cameras as well and has a Rode videomicro mounted Then I have an FZ2000, and it actually has a headphone jack :) that I can use if necessary, but usually I only look at the sound meters on the display, which the FZ300 also has and there I started with a Rode Videomic Pro but I later bought a Pro+ In addition to that I have some older action cameras but since I don't use these often they are several no name brands

Nice! There are so many good options out there now, as you say it's about knowing your gear and then actually just creating

@@RyanGreen Exactly and that's one thing I like about my Panasonics is that they work well as all-round cameras when it works more like a video camera but with photo functions that are enough for the photographs I take in any case.

I owned this since college and it's still the only camera I use i wanna maximize its potential until i see an upgrade although its quality is not a sharp as others light room does its wonders. and I been using it too for video even if its not that sharp anymore. Definitely a good camera.

Yep, I think I notice its shortcomings more in video than in photo. You can definitely still get some great shots from it!

For my RU-vid videos I just use my iPhone 11 Pro with an external mic (Rode one that plugs into lightening port) and FilmicPro to record. With added lighting it does a pretty good job.

Yep, the lighting is super important!

DSLRs CAN be fine as long as you don't have to move it (poor stability), change the battery (is covered by the tripod), record for long periods (overheating), need to travel and record multiple focal lengths (carry multiple heavy lenses) or react/ record quickly to something that's further than your focal length (you already missed it by the time you change lenses). Just made a video about this, for most people I think camcorders / Xperia phones are better! Anyway can do you have a video on Zoom H1N audio settings? I'm getting better audio from my iPhone 13, which I think means I'm doing something wrong- would love your input!

I watched your video and enjoyed it! Not sure I'm 100% on board with every point but definitely entertaining haha. How are you using the Zoom H1N? The built in mics, or with an external mic?

@@RyanGreen Hey bro thanks for watching. On the same DSLR video, the mic transitions from iPhone to Zoom H1N at 3:41. I am using standard settings "out the box" as no idea what I'm doing.. Also since your vids are much higher quality than mine if you have any feedback for something I can do to improve for my next video would be great!

My Nikon D50 is arriving today, why? It will work my 2000s era autofocus lenses and its affordable. It also takes awesome pictures.

Yep, I think for photography especially the gap is much more narrow than video! Is this your first Nikon, or have you owned a few?

I was using my Samsung Nx300, but it turns out my Nothing Phone 1 camera does better video than the Nx300. Once Blackmagic get their camera on Android, I am switching full time to smartphone content creation.

The Blackmagic app is awesome! I reckon smartphones are definitely good enough for a lot of use cases
