Today we’re cleaning up a heavily used 15” Apple Macbook Pro from 2006. This was very expensive when it was released and has seen a hard life. So, let’s restore it and see what it’s still capable of :) #apple #laptop #restoration

trouble is, M1 macbooks are very unrepairable and not upgradable one bit. the RAM is part of the M1 and soldered to the board. the storage is also soldered. and the batteries are usually glued or require a proprietary driver. not good!
@hunterjay8331

@@TheSpotify95 I’m sure an M1 even after 17 years should run fine assuming it’s been taken care of. I’ve got an iMac that’s the same age and it too runs great to this day. Honestly I thought that was pathetic. If you used a guide to fix your laptop to make a video that you get paid for, you should try to show some appreciate by sending some traffic their way, not asking them for payment. It’s a scumbag move and I’m saying that as a long time subscriber but it’s just not on.
@JackBandicootsBunker
@JackBandicootsBunker 2 года назад
@@jamesorrell7462 Nathan doesn’t seem to understand that it’s THE COMMUNITY which submits most of the guides to iFixit and that is the beauty. Hardly anyone who visits the site ends up buying their repair kits or replacement parts, as they can both be found for cheaper on eBay or AliExpress. So sending traffic isn’t risking the monetization of this video or his channel. Rather than just a dick move, it might have also been an ill-informed one.

I had a 17" one around that time. The build quality has really got a lot better, a few things of note, - you used to get an almost static shock from resting your palm on the edge of the laptop, where the top case joined with the bottom (the good old days). - I miss the battery icon charge/ standby lights or rather the laser cut LED holes in the aluminium that you could barely see when off. They killed them off after the first lot of unibodies for some reason.

The 17" version was my daily-driver through most of my teen years! I got it secondhand of course. I ran Windows XP with BootCamp and played CS, Left 4 Dead, Battlefield 2… It ran them great! Also one day it wasn't enough obviously. The unit we have at home is still working. But its battery is dead and the screen is very dim. That's an odd way for a screen to age nowadays, but it seems to be recurrent with these machines. I personally never liked the keyboard and always preferred the then new external keyboard that came with iMacs. But I often heard people liked it, yeah Nice video!

I think in the end he was offered an upgrade but I really don't remember, even when being used up until 2013 (when he got the upgrade), there being any noticeable lag or performance issues. Nice work. I'd love to see more before & after comparisons in terms of system boot-up time, temperature under load etc just to show what a bit of TLC could do for an older system like this. I would absolutely have stuck with Snow Leopard on a Macbook of that era because of that low RAM ceiling and because SL is simply a far-superior OS. The difference in performance on my Late-2011 MBP 13" running 10.6.8 was astounding. Under 10.6, booting to a usable desktop takes about 20-30secs. In 10.7+, it's upwards of a minute (this is with the stock 5400rpm HD). Perhaps with an SSD the difference would be less extreme, although 10.6 is also way less RAM-hungry. When Lion was new, 4GB of RAM was workable, if you were militant at keeping a minimum number of applications open (a browser, Mail, iCal, plus one or two MS Office applications...). In 2021, with newer browsers and other software, it would be close to unusable given the OS' larger footprint just by itself. These days, my trusty MBP is on Sierra, and just with Chrome and Mail in use, we're sitting at 5.5GB used RAM. Thankfully we've come a long way from the days of Mavericks and its sloppy RAM Management & Compression, where all 8GB would be used caching great swathes of rubbish, and the system would behave like Vista on a 486.

This is an excellent video. It was fun getting to watch you fully refurbish a laptop which, I have in my collection. Like you, I enjoy the screen and keyboard on these units. In addition, there is a great selection of ports: expansion card slot, external monitor port, audio-in port, audio-out port, two (2) USB "A" ports, Fire-wire 400 port, and a Fire-wire 800 port. Plus it still has a built-in DVD super-drive. Prefer to keep mine on OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard because with Rosetta, you are able to run older Power PC OS X software titles. Also, using the Apple white remote control makes Front Row a lot of fun (smile...smile).

Especially with that 3D white base!! 2 of the features that really impressed me at that time was the Garage Band, and the Chess game. I don't think I'll ever forget that machine!! it was a whole experience for me! That 3d processing Turkish blue bar is another thing that I miss about it.. It brings me lots of memories.. I am a X Gen dude who grew up with a Commondore Vic 20. I'm pretty well adapted when it comes to technology and social media apps; to the point that I could have a long conversation with a Z Gen person regarding trends, technology and other things. But the advantage I think I have over Gen Zs and millennials is that I appreciate a lot more this new technology, since I grew up without it, and damm! I still remember perfectly how it was when we used to still have a rotary phone. or the first time I saw a Windows 3.0 PC ... I also remember attending a Windows XP conference in Tucson in 2001.. Hell!! Was I impressed!! mi first Mac experience was in 1983 while taking "Logo " Drawing classes during a Summer camp in my hometown.. Proud to be old! lol

I did similar work on a 15-in MacBook Pro (early 2008), adding a 4 GB RAM module to the existing 2 GB unit. The horrid 200 GB 5400 rpm HDD made way for a cheap 240 GB SSD, those two features making it a much more usable proposition. It has 10.6.8 on it when I acquired it and getting it upgraded to 10.9 Mavericks was a real trial, the only way possible was to temporarily put the SSD into an external FireWire case and do the installation another Mac. It now has 10.11.6 El Capitan (which installed with no problem) and Safari is no longer supported by most websites. I have usable versions of Firefox, Brave and Chrome that can't be upgraded. The battery was replaced five months ago, alas I paid $120, not $60 as you did. I really do love that "type" of keyboard.

I had one of these, I loved it but it only lasted me about 5 years. 5 years of heavy use though, so it wasn’t terrible.

I still use from time to time a similar model (C2D 2.16ghz, 4gb ram and a SSD, running 10.6.8 ) I bought new in 2006. It´s very much like new.

When you do these videos, you should try installing a linux distro on these old computers to see if they can run an updated OS from nowadays.

I just installed peppermint os 32 bit on an 05’ pentium 4 3.06ghz and it works fine. Only hang up is a cpu that old has a hard time running RU-vid’s code. (Nvdia Quattro 600 1gb, but that’s not the bottleneck). But great for light office work/video/emulation gaming and some light web surfing.

Cool for use with old firewire cameras and sound interfaces. Would probably try to find a cool sticker to hide that damage on the wristrest

I love this Mac I even used the latest model of it early 2008 top of the line, I really don't know but I stoped using my Touch Bar MacBook pro for this now for basic use of stuff and I fixed 20 of them and sold them for profit.

I have a couple first gen macbooks that still work, and putting an SSD in them makes a huge difference in usability. The other thing that makes them much more usable is installing linux, you can actually run a modern operating system on them with no old unresolved security issues, and all the modern features. Ive even gotten one ofthem running windows 10 that was previously installed on an old hard drive.

I have the same laptop, though it was plagued with the faulty nvidia gpu from 2008. Do you possibly know any fixes without doing a gpu reflow?

Looks to be very lightly used. Sadly, mine fell victim to the GPU BGAs desoldering because of high thermal stress.
