Several species of birds love fruit. I have a migratory pair that comes every year and eats my strawberries and blueberries. The damage is very clearly pecks out of the fruit. The only way to stop the damage is to use bird netting. Here is one way to use it and secure it.

I like how it doesn't obscure the beauty of the plants.

I covered the whole strawberry bed in that netting. No birds, now if I can keep the slugs out! Good information Gary.

Wow VERY timely info! I just realized that I have birds eating half of all of my strawberries right now and was just looking up options for bird netting. Thanks for showing some ways that it's done!

A couple days late for me - something ate the whole berry and they're not even ripe yet. I'll be ready for them next year, Thanks Gary - one of my favorite channels.

Thanks Gary, I use that same netting and it does work very well, but as you pointed out it is very difficult to work with. Thanks for the idea of the clips, I'll be getting some as right now I'm using spring clamps which get caught up in the netting. Wayne

I've been using bird netting around the trunk of my pear tree to keep the squirrels off. Works so far. We'll see when pears start showing.

This works great. Used 1st time this year. I used hoops and draped the netting over. I was able to cover a 4 x 16 ft raised bed. Was originally to keep the chickens out of my beds but I caught a snake trying to go thru the netting but was killed because it was to big. Have been amazed at how good this is. Plan to roll up sides on a small pvc pipe next year for easier access.

This year I could harvest strawberries 🍓 as well because we've built a strawberry 🍓 cage similar to the one you have. 👍

Your videos are great. I have a suggestion about your netting, if you keep it further from the plants, you keep the birds further from the fruit. With it so close, they are able to eat through the netting.

Squirrels are my issue, this year I've put netting around them but I'm not sure it's going to keep them out, but we will seeeee 🤞🤞

the blackbird was clever enough to work out how to remove my netting. I had to weigh it down

I use the really big clips for plastic on my hoop frames. Works better than the plastic clips.

I had that netting and it would even tangle wildlife- snakes, birds, frogs. You name it. So I stopped using it and now either work with deer fencing net so it's got wider holes for wildlife to escape or chicken wire mesh.

I have more of a problem with squirrels. Will this netting keep out squirrels?
@pamjarka5375
@pamjarka5375 3 года назад
yeah - and sometimes it traps them if they get caught in the folds of the netting. I've killed a chipmunk (totally by accident) and freed two squirrels from different plantings with this net, but it does work.

Do you tried putting water out for the birds? Usually they are thirsty and not hungry when eating veggies.

Any really. For fruit a stay as close to a 5-5-5 as possible. But they aren't too picky.Check out the new MFVG/BULK Tab on my seed shop. Greatly discounted seed packages for those that follow My First Vegetable Garden. www.therustedgarden.com

I am growing strawberries in a container on the fromt porch and I noticed that once it started bearing fruit it was chewed up. I actually thought that it was this squirrel that likes to come around, but duh... we have a magnolia tree in the front yard with a doves nest in it. Makes sense. Also, is it true that for the first six weeks you are supposed to pick the flowers and smaller strawberries to make the crop stronger? I did not do that yet. I wanted a second opinion... thanks

lolaandoliviabath I never did. If it is first year planting it will take that year for them to get established no matter what you do. I would just let em grow and eat the berries as they come. I also never removed flowers from my established strawberries.
