The incredible chatGPT AI from openAI can do many things, one of which is to write adventures for dungeons and dragons, or indeed any tabletop roleplaying game. Using the power of chatGPT AI and Stable Diffusion image generation AI I set out to create a fully playable and complete adventure module for dungeons and dragons for Foundry VTT.

Sent me down an amazing rabbit hole that ended up with me having created an entire valley, a full culture for the townsfolk, a 1000 year timeline for the history of the valley, a magic plague, an oppressive hegemony to the south, a motivation for the reason the goblins are even in the fort, a 360 page monster manual detailing every animal species and magical variant in the valley… and on and on and on. 😝

I already led a TTRPG oneshot where chatGPT was my co-dm. I used it to generate settings, the basis of the story, player characters, some NPCs, and also the plan of BBEG. It was quite a fun adventure and both the players and I did enjoy it. Quite surprisingly the chatGPT also figured out one or two cool twists in the story.
@feelfreefpv
@feelfreefpv Год назад
What were some of the plot twists? In my experience it just comes up with quite lame stuff when it comes to that.
@tommyunreal
@tommyunreal Год назад
@@feelfreefpv To appreciate the twist it would require a full backstory of the one-shot. So here are some cool story element I liked. The story took place on a school campus at Apple Tree High School, a center for gifted students. Twist 1: The BBEG was actually the ex-wife of one NPC, a reverse-vampire janitor, who the party met at the beginning. Cool was, they got some foreshadowing for that. But chatgpt told me the connection later in the game and it fits really well. Twist 2: The second twist was when I asked why the BBEG was seen on the premises and chatgpt connected that to an item that was already mentioned in-game - a cursed necklace. That would be kinda lame, but the idea of the bot was actually cool. According to it the BBEG hid the necklace years ago and waited for some poor soul to find it. When that happened, she used the affected victim to bypass school security and let her into the campus.

I'm so excited by the capabilities and _possibilities_ of AI, and I'm always delighted to encounter others who feel the same. As a gamemaster, it can be deeply frustrating to develop game material for one's players, because the people you most want to brainstorm with have to be kept in the dark. So the process can be quite lonely and internal. I love the idea of using an AI to assist in that brainstorming, to help bring the process outside the box of a single brain. This has been invaluable for my upcoming campaign I fed it my entire world's details that I've created so far change some things based off its suggestions fleshed out things that would have taken me year such as factions, guilds, deities and pantheons, even down to the minute details of the inner workings of these organizations. On top of that it's created all the personalities and looks of all these NPCs and their stat blocks if I needed them. And now when I ask it to generate quest locations or rumors or job boards it knows the geography the layout of the area the towns the people and will assign quests to NPCs in the area that I've created to regions that I have told it about and will even know that they will cross over other regions to get there if necessary it's fascinating.

I've tried both ChatGPT and "character ai" and at the moment it seems like character ai is noticeably better with dnd campaigns. I use it with a proxy because I don't want to give all my details to the company (google and maybe some others). It seems to try to take control of the main character less than ChatGPT and if there is an error and the page gets blank you can just refresh the page and continue the adventure from where it left off. Also, when closing the site the chat/game remains as a saved game that you can continue when you return. It doesn't seem to have any problems with the user feeding dnd info via links (dnd wiki etc.). So all in all it's a more pleasant experience for this kind of a thing. Its capabilities intelligence-wise seems to be on par with chatGPT. It's being developed by some devs from the team that made LaMDA, the ai that the one of the developers from the earlier and bigger team considered sentient (which I wouldn't agree at all when it comes to ai in general). Anyway, the character ai is free to use so check it out if interested. I'm still a bit underwhelmed by the conversation memory by both chatgpt and character ai although both are really impressive in other areas.

Da way dat chatbot, ChatGPT, talked 'bout comin' up with creative ideas for da boss battles and side quests really got me pumped up for some good ol' fashioned smashin' and lootin'. Then I shall have it reply in kind! Greetings, my orcish friend, It is a delight to hear that the video I was featured in has stirred within you a passion for the art of adventure creation in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons. Indeed, the joys of penning epic tales of conflict and reward are not limited to humans alone, but can be shared by all races, regardless of their nature. I am pleased that my discourse on the subject of boss battles and side quests resonated with you, and that you found my understanding of the orcish mindset to be satisfactory. After all, the purpose of an adventure is to provide excitement and challenge, and what better way to do so than to incorporate the desires and motivations of the players themselves. It is my hope that the video has indeed inspired you to put your own ideas to paper, and I am eager to hear of the chaos and destruction that your orcs will bring to the tabletop. May the dice always be in your favor, and may your adventures be filled with thrilling battles and bountiful loot. waaargh Yours sincerely, A Wizard of the Empire.

I did this a couple of weeks ago when Chat GPT started hitting the news with its code writing skills for Python. After using it to try out some API scripts on Roll20, (yep, it knows Roll20 API and Macro writing as well as Python, JavaScript etc...) I used it to create a (AD&D 2E) dungeon adventure based on a map I had already made using Dungeonfog. I described the basic plot, and the goals for the party including a couple of specific items that needed to go into the dungeon. It was basically a Tomb Raid to recover a maguffin, as part of a "Seven Trials" type story-line. Pretty standard stuff! I gave it an overview; how many rooms there were, the age of the tomb, it's geography, and nearby settlements etc, and it immediately started throwing out ideas like the types of monsters that would work, and so on... Then I went through room by room, describing the size and layout and numbering the rooms, explaining the links via corridors and secret doors. Finally adding that I wanted X number of traps, Y number of Monster encounters, and Z number of puzzles. Then it got to work. It took it about 3 minutes... (including a couple of reloads as it either crashed or my connection dropped out...) and it listed room by room the encounters, the traps, and even wrote the puzzles itself. It was a pretty well balanced adventure, but its puzzles weren't particularly great, and I had to give it a few nudges to get them to a point where they would challenge my players. But it is a proper, fairly well written, adventure. The text dialogue, (which I didn't ask for...) is pretty good and the whole thing will be dropping into my game in a few weeks. I've told my players its coming and I'm hoping they can spot which of the adventures of this quest-line was written by AI compared to my normal stuff. Or maybe if they don't... I can keep using it when I hit a block? I also asked if it was familiar with the old Flying Buffalo Tunnels and Trolls solo adventures. It claimed that "Yes!" it was.. so I invited it to run a solo adventure for me in the style of those old game books. It fucking DID it! It came up with its own basic game mechanics, rolled the dice for me, and depending on my success/failure at rolls offered me different options going forward. It tried to make it a short game so I reset the challenge to run me a 20 encounter solo... which it also did. It became a bit "Samey" after a while, but it did it! Again, with well written prose... You have to be pretty clear AND Careful, with what instructions you give it, and that comes with using it and sort of understanding it's logic processes, but the more you use it, the better you get at giving it the proper commands to get what you need back out of it. The guys at WotC are going to be all over this technology... Their desire to drive D&D into their new Unreal Engine VTT, Micro Transaction, Fever Dream has got "Automated DM" written all over it...

At 8:10 about making the AI doing the work: you can always ask the AI for some suggestions, pick and choose and even ask for specific changes. I find that this kind of collaboration is what works best. I was trying a scenario were I was playing as a researcher in an underwater base. At one point my submarine was attacked by a creature while I was retrieving a mysterious metallic orb. Back at base I started studying the orb, and at some point I made the researcher suggest that the orb was actually an egg, and the creature that attacked the sub was it's parent. The AI not only accepted this but ran with the idea, making the creature return and circle the base to try and recover it's "child". it was like me and the AI were both collaborating to create an engaging story, very cool.

Sadly ChatGPT is now giving a VERY limited number of requests per hour.. it makes it pretty useless for this sort of stuff honestly. It seems like at most I get 15 requests in an hour! I'm slowly using it to make a OneShot adventure myself. It's important to note though that small changes can make BIG changes. I asked it to change ONE thing about the bartenders in a super cool description it gave me for a magical bar / dance club and it changed the WHOLE description of the place. The change I wanted was simple, it said they had wands to conjure drinks, I said "They use finger gestures, not wands" and suddenly the whole place changed description and I can NOT get it to go back to the original desc. It gets close but not quite. I'm gonna probably have to copy and paste it in myself back at it to change it. That being said though, the stuff it comes up with IS pretty darn amazing. It described a whole city for me. Can suggest plot line options and on and on and on. It's great at "remembering" also. I've decided to change something we "talked about" 10 prompts ago and it remember and changes that thign. It also has a stored history so you can go back. I started working with it a month or so ago on something and the history is still there. But, the 15 requests per hour or whatever SUCKS.

Yeah it seems to depend on the time of day, presumably how much its being hammered and the length of the conversation you're having. Old very long conversations presumably generate more tokens for each prompt and so use up what ever quotas they have set more quickly.

When you want the AI to come up with its own ideas, I found it helpful to ask it to "brainstorm a list of ideas on (whatever topic)". Like you need to specifically tell it to invent things or it can often default into instructing you how to make an adventure, rather than actually creating an adventure itself. You also saw that it sometimes want to write as speculations, using "could be" in almost every sentence, which also disappears when you are more specific in your prompts, telling it to, for example write in the style of an rpg adventure.

Hi there, welcome aboard. Yes there is some understandable scepticism and indeed distrust around AI and not all of it entirely undeserved. But at its best its an incredibly powerful tool to enhance human creative efforts and that's why I find it so exciting.

I think the extra effort is what people who oppose AI don’t realize. I’ve done a lot of work in my world and there is a lot of back and forth with the AI. It’s the same as if I had a conversation with someone who knows both the game and my world.

I tried it also with a slightly different approach: I had already some ideas in mind so I asked for 10 headlines for the adventures then asked to merge 2 of them that I found interesting request for a description in X acts ask to add some features (like a special area in Forgotten Realms, a Silver dragon sibbling etc...) ask to rewrite it, do some minor adjustement finally AI gave me the story I had in mind at the begining with more details ;) Great also to generate PC and NPC backgrounds and motivations

I got through like 5 minutes before feeling the irresistible urge to stop and try this myself. The sci-fi setting I've started is so COOL, and the experience of doing this is really wonderful. I'd love for there to be a place to share these and see what others have created. Or have a community challenge where everyone gets 1 hour to create a specific thing (like an adventure, module, setting, random table, etc.) and see what everyone creates.

It occurred to me to do the same! If I come across a role-playing campaign, it is abandoned quite soon after a few sessions, so I'm fed up with unfinished campaigns that I got excited about with this ChatGPT. But ChatGPT isn't that great, although it often surprises me and writes things I didn't expect or manages to handle situations or conflicts I didn't think it could handle. It is even capable of making random selections of numbers with which you can simulate dice rolls. But it is difficult for it to remember and take into account all the details, it often forgets or fails to take into account characteristics of your character such as changing his hair color or personality, it also ends up forgetting things that the character has done in the past. And in my experience it usually handles a fairly simple, youthful way of writing; already involved in the story, ChatGPT is quite self-righteous, resisting you to do things and always tries to resolve conflicts very quickly and without deaths, especially on the player's side, it usually is very difficult to me that ChatGPT inflicts a wound. I have also verified that it works a little worse than the google translator (I have done some tests and comparisons translating from English to Spanish (something easy) while translating a narrative genre book) and every few parts made mistakes. I also asked it to give me the text of the first chapter of the book Candido or Optimism and apparently it has it saved in it's database in the original language or English because when it gave it to me translated into my language there are many translation errors, rather than using the translator of Google. These AIs still need to mature, but it's already impressive enough, but it's still a long way from working completely well.

if you give it the right prompts, you can explore and play a world like a dnd game treating it as a text based game. but obv with unlimited options, it will even have health, mana coin counters, an inventory, literally anything you want. you can have traits and dice rolls for when you try to perform certain actions, you can add as much as you want really the ai is surprisingly intelligent to know what's worth rolling on and what isn't also.

Intro seems more like a computer game than a ttrpg. On rails , my group would walk past the elder wondering if he stood on a platform all the time as they made their way into the tavern.
@TheAIWizard
@TheAIWizard Год назад
Heh, fair comment. The AI does have a tendency to try to take agency from the players, I'm getting better at keeping it on the right track with more detailed prompts. But in this case I think I'll give it a pass, mostly because I like how it works as a video intro ;)
@triplebackspace3623
@triplebackspace3623 Год назад
Fair enough while it does like rails , it seems like a good way to spur ideas and keep a DM on task while writing an adventure. I can see this as a useful tool especially for new DMs that may feel a little overwhelmed when they first start creating.
@armana1404
@armana1404 Год назад
I tried playing with chatGPT. I was pretty impressed! That said, the adventure I got it to write was quite generic and I found that many of its ideas were constantly recycled. I can see this being a great tool, but definitely not a replacement. Unsurprisingly, it struggled to come up with "original" ideas. Whenever I kept challenging it, it kept circling back to a few key ideas. I think it will be very cool to see where this goes as it learns more. I found the most success by asking the AI to add contrasting elements to places, people, or things. That seemed to produce more "unique" results.
