I added crushed eggshells to my 29 gallon freshwater planted tank to add calcium (Ca) magnesium (Mg) and potssium (K) to my planted tank. This should provide necessary mineral ions (electrolytes) as well as buffer the pH to prevent acidification as the nitrates accumulate.

The calcium carbonate that the shells are made of is pretty much insoluble in neutral pH water (~7) but the it will react with any acid to produce calcium oxide and carbon dioxide. This means that egg shells will neutralise acid but it will not make your water alkaline. It will also add soluble calcium oxide to your water as well as giving plants a little extra CO2. This should be something that will massively benefit a planted aquarium.

The math is a bit off. The eggshell lost about 0.2% of its calcium, but we don't know the calcium content of the water to start, so we don't know the % change of the water. That said, the spirit of you comment remains. Proceed.

Well, I guess I will add the crushed egg shells to my freshwater aquarium from now on. Just learned the calcium only gets absorbed in a lower PH and certainly not in an 8.4 ph that is common in reef tanks. So the eggshells should benefit my freshwater snails and for my reef tank I will stick with supplements that are meant for the saltwater environment. Live and learn.

Great topic! I run my thru a mini processor that turns them to a powder, but I leave the membrane on and I bake them in the oven first. Then I sprinkle sum in my shrimp tanks after a water change, and the shrimp eat it.

Yea no worries I think they are 6 bucks or so here. They do work well. If you eat eggs once a week it takes no time at all to collect a whack. But like I said I just microwave mine less hassle and my shrimp tank is insane. I give them away to buds all the time. Not sure if that is why, but hey if it is not broke don't fix it I say!

I'm going to add egg shell to my aquarium. It has been established for years, and to be honest, I don't do water changes. The guppies don't seem to mind, and the pothos control the nitrate levels. I used to use treated tap water, but I've been using rain water for a while now. When I first set the tank up, the pH was very high. Now it's very very low...
@Beautybabyxoxo13

hello, i’ve been trying to figure out how to have pothos in my aquarium, any tips on how you have yours?
@BarryWillBuck
@BarryWillBuck 3 года назад
@@Beautybabyxoxo13 Do they die when you put them in? I can imagine lighting would play the greatest factor. My lighting is probably subpar for the pothos, but they still grow...slowly. If you're asking how I started them, I got cuttings from a pothos plant, and put weights on the bottoms of them...the weights are so they don't float around the tank.
@Beautybabyxoxo13
@Beautybabyxoxo13 3 года назад
@@BarryWillBuck no I haven’t tried to put them in, I don’t know how to have them in the water without the foliage touching the water, but cuttings easily root in water. I have different variegation a of pothos and want some in my aquarium I just don’t know how to set that up
@BarryWillBuck
@BarryWillBuck 3 года назад
@@Beautybabyxoxo13 oh, I initially had the bottom half in the fish tank through one of the holes on the hood of the fish tank. The foliage prevented it from falling in, and it started rooting fine. Eventually, I submerged the entire cutting because there was more light in the fish tank. Since then it has managed to grow out of the water and up against the light on the top. As a plus, when a guppy gives birth, the fry tend to take refuge in the leaves that are still submerged.

Using simple logics, the more your water is acidic the more the shells are going to disolve fast. I'm wondering if a PH above 7 will have any effect at all (?) I don't think so. BUT IF you bring those shells inside the anerobic area of your substrate (where it is very acidic) the shells will dissolve even in a high PH aquarium. The calcium will be absorbed by the plants and, in time, will benefit the whole setup. Anyway this is a very good idea and I will definitely test that in my shrimp tank.
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly 8 месяцев назад
I think the pH tops out around 7.6, similar to crushed coral. I does dissolve more slowly as the pH increases though. It sorta self regulates.

@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly Following some of the comments on two different videos on this topic. I cooked the eggshells for 15 minutes before crushing then in a coffee grinder. This works very well and does make a somewhat fine powder that still falls to the bottom. Some of my fish did feast right away on this (12 hours later, they're not dead yet😅 so I guess it's ok). The shrimps seemed to love it a lot also. Thanks again for the tip.

The thought that eggshells do not dissolve into water is just false, I myself did an experiment with a boiled cleaned out whelk shell from a beach and put it into my aquarium and that is mostly CaCO3 just like the eggshell but its thicker than an eggshell, this means eggshells should dissolve even faster. I actually put some crushed eggshells into my cherry shrimp tank that has had trouble with moulting with the white rings of death and after several days I seen the first shrimp with a fully successful moult.

Good info and glad you explained this. I have soft water also and I suspected I didn’t have calcium and magnesium for plant growth and like you I would occasionally loose fish that I had for a while for unknown reasons. Most people told me that egg shells would not give me enough calcium and would be very slow to work. I am going to try this and see.

Great discussion Dan. I guess the speed it would dissolve would depend on how low the PH level is. That's the question. The PH needs to be low enough so that the calcium would dissolve quickly enough to make it worthwhile. What are your thoughts on putting calcium tablets (i.e. tums) into the tank to boost the calcium. More likely they would dissolve since the calcium is already in a power and there is more surface area.
@DanHiteshew-oneandonly

Both tend to grow in acidic soils. You could even add lime you use on lawns to help buffer the soil for those plants. Roses and Hydrangeas both benefit from a 1/4 cup of epsom salts added to the soil each year. Sprinkle it around the base of the plant stem and use a claw tool to scratch it into the soil to a distance up to two feet from the stem. If your Hydrangeas' blossoms are pink the epsom salt will turn them blue. I usually added mine to my plants in the fall so it will et diluted by winter snow and spring rains and sent deep into the subsurface soil.

Just a question about this. How are your angelfish surviving in the tank with egg shells. Isn't that making your water hard? Only asking because I would love to have my snails in with my angel but they don't do well and their shells get holes in them.
