This video will give you the necessary knowledge to get into the footstraps for the first time.
In order to follow the instructions and succeed you will need to be able to use the harness with ease and pick up speed.
The main tips for entering the footstraps are:
1- Pick up speed and move your feet back towards the footstraps.
2- Sit down in the harness and increase the power and speed.
3- SLIDE your feet into the straps, starting with the front one.
4- At all times maintain the correct direction and speed.
5- Always keep the board flat on the water.

There seems to be two ways of getting up on a plane and strapping in. The dangerous way, and the exhausting way. 1.) The dangerous way: Hook into the harness, THEN strap the front foot in, THEN strap the back foot in. This is how I've been doing it this season, because I can relax into the harness and minimize the amount of energy I expend. HOWEVER: The danger of being catapulted in planing conditions is very high. I have to be VERY careful as I build up enough speed to get into the straps. There is a very narrow window between bearing off the wind enough to power up onto the plane and bearing off too much to prevent the catapult. It feels super dangerous because I get so light on my feet, and can feel the edge of the catapult. 2.) The exhausting way: Strap the front foot in, THEN hook in, then back foot. This seems preferable, but you have to be in really good shape. In order to almost completely prevent a catapult, I've found that strapping the front foot in first is really important, but when it's windy enough to plane, I find that I get tired very quickly when sailing without the harness hooked in.
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
There may be a higher risk of catapulting with option 1 but I always recommend people to go with that one. It is more 'correct' in many ways and a better way of learning and practicing useful techniques. Also I have seen plenty of people still catapult with the front foot in the straps so option 2 definitely isnt 100 percent safe! Plus the more you conserve energy the more you can windsurf!!!! And anyway... can anyone really say they know windsurfing if the havent catapulted 1000 times?! An extra tip for catapulting however is never let go of the boom! the way it may still string a little but you wont get hurt :)
@CharlieCushing
@CharlieCushing 4 года назад
@@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind Yes! Such a good analysis. I love staying in the harness as much as possible, and it feels really good to strap in while hanging off the harness like that. And it's so true: Just hold onto that boom. It's an interesting progression, learning to make that into an instinct.

@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind

The theory is the same basically just the whole process is more challenging and technical. Usually if you are learning it is easier to start with the strap position more centred and slowly move them outwards as you progress... But sure if I have time I might make a video for this specific situation as well :)

Thank you, fantastic video!! I have this problem, my board is wider and straps are further away from the center than yours. As soon as I try to step backwards and close to the straps, the board spins upwind. Is there anything I can do beyond weight on the sail through the harness and more weight on the front foot in order to stop the board from spinning?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 4 года назад
Thats about it when it come to technique! However, you should make sure that you have plenty of power in the sail. Moving back on the board doesnt work unless you have enoough power to back it up. So make sure you are not hesitating and get as much power and speed as you can before moving back.

Great video! I have one problem: as I am learning I've got a board that is free race / slalom. So basically my footstraps are very outside and back - and there is no chance to move them into an easier placement. Any suggestions??

Hey! Glad you liked the video. Unfortunately there is no other choice for placement with those kind of boards! and they are hard boards to ride properly. I suggest you either rent or trade this board for a simply freeride.

Hi, thanks for the videos you post !! I've been windsurfing recently and I'm learning the basics. Now I have a 156l school board with daggerboard and a 6 square meter sail. My weight is 70kg and the wind of the spot is 9-10 very gusty in winter, 10-11 more stable in summer, wave always 0.6-1 meter. Once improved, what can be the most suitable sailboard combination? Now with light wind when I move back to reach the foot-straps the board rears up and I end up in the water .. why? I have never used a harness yet
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 3 года назад
Hey! I am glad you like the videos :) There is a long way to go and lots of things to learn before you even start thinking of your final setup. For example for sure picking up speed and using harness and footstraps is a must, because all this leads up to you finding your style of windsurfing. Most likely however, with the conditions you describe, you will end up doing some form of freeriding or lightwind racing/formula. For the freeriding that is the most common again it depends a lot on level and what you like but I would probably go for a board around 125-130lt and a sail over 7m. But again, all this is just guessing and estimating. It is really not possible for me to tell you what to use without first of all seeing your conditions and second without knowing your exact level at the time you want this equipment for! As for your other question about the board steering upwind, that is most likely because you are stepping too far back for your skill level and also for the power you have in the sail. The more power you get in the sail and the more speed you pick up, that is when you should move back. You cannot just step back because you want to. i hope this helps you out somehow! :)

I used a smaller board last weekend with not too high wind.. when stepping into the back strap it felt like the weight shifted too far back, the nose rose and the board stalled leading to coming out of the planing. Tried to save it by leaning more forwards pressuring the mast foot through the harness, but wasn’t enough. Do you recommend setting the mast foot more forward, or the back strap forward, (or the front strap forward)?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 3 года назад
Hey! Changing the strap positions wont make such a significant change in most boards... So I suggest working on the techniques you mentioned above and keep in mind that lighter winds will always be harder! So if its your first times trying to get into the straps on such a small board, doing it in stronger wind first to get a feel for the board should help. One more thing to keep in mind is that it is better to be using these techniques (mastfoot pressure especially) before trying to get into straps. Dont wait for the nose to lift and the board to stall to put them into action! It is usually too late by then, especially when not fully powered up! Of course you can also try playing around with strap positions but like I said it is usually not that. Hope this helps! :)
@iotarask77

@@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind I was already planing in the front strap. Once stepped into the rear, the board reared slowing me down and out of plane quickly. It occurred 3 times then gave up on the back foot strap for the day. Felt like the balance was too far in the back, thus wondering how best to counter it?
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind
@kyriakosgiakoumaroswingandwind 3 года назад
@@iotarask77 Its hard to say without seeing you myself. But like I said, you can try bringing your straps further forward and more inwards but most likely the fault lies in technique. Take the body position for example. If you practice on the beach taking the body position you should have while planing, you should be able to lift the back leg off the ground with ease as you will be hanging off the sail and sending all the force through your arms, down your core and to your front foot. This should keep the boar flat on the water to maximize speed and control and also allow you to slide your back foot into the straps without affecting your board much.

Hey J3hundi, I am sad to hear you are displeased with the video. However, if you pay a little more attention and listen to the details you will understand that the trick to planing is in keeping the board flat through mastfoot pressure and pressure on you front foot. This will help you avoid many of the common mistakes and also help to not lose speed! Also, although it seems like a minor detail pay attention to the part of sliding your feet across the board instead of lifting them. this will also help you not shift your wait around too much. I recommend you rewatch the video and focus especiall on the part about the feet and mastfoot pressure. Hope this helps out a bit more and that you manage to perfect yout footstraps/planing soon! Good luck

Actually this videos helps alots, I watch tons of plaining videos on youtube but still can't do it, the board would always round up to the wind and lose speed, after I focus on the weight on the harness and front foot back foot weight issue. Done!! I am in and plaining for the first time. :) many newbies I talked to at the club have this problem.
