Using FOSS in Linux (or not)

I see too often people getting talked down to for not using FOSS, or for using blobs/proprietary software, bloat, a certain desktop environment or distro. This toxicity needs to stop. But most importantly, if you're one of the people who have been treated this way, you've done NOTHING wrong. Other than breaking actual laws, you can do anything you want with your system. It's YOUR system, so don't let anyone else tell you how to run it.
Yes, you can be educated, and yes, some people will let you know about some things that perhaps you didn't know about, and that's fine. But my issue is when people get shamed. There's no place for this in our community. You don't know why someone is using something. Perhaps they have no choice, perhaps they can't afford to get something else, it really doesn't matter. Now saying all this, there are also people who innocently joke around with things like this, and it's usually obvious, so be aware of that.
This is sort of a rant, yes, but it's something that's been bothering me for a while. And while I usually try to stay unbiased with my videos on most topics, there is a limit.
As the disclaimer says at the beginning of the video, I fully support FOSS and I do agree that it is one of the most important things in the Linux world, but I will never force someone's view, nor will I judge them publicly for their choices.
Thanks for watching!

People like that are the reason the stereotype of linux being only for nerds still exists.Most people don't care about semantics like this. They just want something that works,computers are appliances not temples.If they want more people to adopt free software they have to make it inviting not toxic.

Good video rant, I think that the awareness of FOSS as a solution is more important for its growth than using it for everything, it takes a while to realise this, I am pretty sure all Linux and BSD users go though a stage of strictly using non proprietary software. I would say use the solutions that work for you, that have licencing terms you are comfortable with. Compromises do not have to be a bad thing, after all compromise is part of life

Thanks for doing this video! I, as a new Linux user, sometimes feel lost because of videos like "Something is bloat, use this instead". I wanna stick to something to learn it but oftentimes I just spend a great amount of time browsing through more minimal softwares instead of just picking one and go with it. I had this dilemma recently trying to choose a wm and a shell.

Definitely don't use or not use something just because of someone's opinion. You can however use their opinions to research the reasons behind them and educate yourself, which can be helpful. Unfortunately there will usually be someone that knocks whatever you use, no matter what it is, and you shouldn't be bothers by comments like this. Like I said in the video, use what YOU want to use on YOUR system if it work for YOU. Cheers and thanks for the comment!

90% of the time FLOSS tools are superior. For that last 10% you either need to use the lesser program or go proprietary.

Absolutely true! But I'd argue that some of that 10% is also because there's no suitable FLOSS alternative. For work, I need to run MS Access and Excel that both use features in the files I work with that do not work in Linux. It is what it is :)

@nudibranch8659
@nudibranch8659 3 года назад
@@Neucher I think the analogy still works. "Internet Vegans" attempt to shame non-vegan people but don't understand that 1 person's meat consumption accounts for many 1/1,000,000th of a top-10-companies *daily* emissions. Thus, vegans who bully non-vegans are being myopic by not realizing that the individual is not at fault, and their role is absolutely miniscule. Sure, proprietary software is very often far from ideal, and as an idealist I recognize that. However, perhaps FOSS Vanguards would better turn their attention to looking at the source, instead of looking down on people for using proprietary software.

I'm glad there's high quality FOSS, but I don't understand why someone would feel superior using it. If anything, I could see reasons for feeling bad about it, such as when someone takes full advantage of all this great free stuff without contributing back. With proprietary software, such a user can at least take comfort knowing the work done was compensated.

Very reasonable video. My only question is why are you editing your thumbnails in 4k anyways? Not intending to criticise only to better understand your reasoning. From what I know RU-vid only displays 1280x720 thumbnail anyways.
@Doriandotslash
@Doriandotslash 3 года назад
I find working with a higher resolution and then scaling it down for a thumbnail makes it look nicer and smoother than just working with a lower resolution to begin with. I suppose it's probably from lower resolutions having more jagged edges and artifacts from effects, and those imperfections get hidden and smoothed out if you start with a higher resolution and then scale down. Thanks for the comment!

I've been very keen to move my home music studio to Linux for years. Is it doable? Yes, absolutely, but with compromises. Sometimes it's just efficiency as in your example of Kdenlive vs Lightworks, however there are many other factors such as plugin and peripheral hardware compatibility. For example I have a relatively old RME Fireface and while it has basic functionality with Linux, its amazingly flexible TotalMix control panel software simply doesn't work, so unless you use Windows or Mac OS's you're throwing away a big chunk of functionality, just to polish your FOSS halo. That's not something I can bring myself to do with hardware that would cost me well over £1000 to replace. It's a good example because were RME to opensource their TotalMix software they'd instantly give away a significant advantage and well over a decade of development work to their direct competitors, same goes for their drivers, which have been industry leading forever. So that's never going to happen, but why should that therefore automatically mean that their products aren't fully functional in Linux and their software Linux compatible? In part it's because of the assumption that everything *HAS* to be FOSS on Linux, so you can't even begin to have a conversation about how many audio engineers would love to side step the nonsenses of Apple and Microsoft, and happily pay handsomely for a rock solid reliable audio workstation running Linux to host their DAW. The 'unixy-like' nature of older versions of Mac OSX was reason enough for really ancient Mac Pro's to be the heart of a great many pro audio studios up until relatively recently. Even without plugins the basic combination of something like Presonus StudioOne and Linux Desktop would be industry changing - well when there is an audio recording industry again :)

I have to use Windows on my main computer for certain software that I use to make EAS scenarios (SAPI 4 and SAPI 5, as a couple of examples.) I use Linux because I can keep old systems running without the vulnerabilities of older windows versions.

No context - no information. Did you know the origin of license is permission to sin, courtesy of the Vatican? Did you know that freedom and license are mutually exclusive? My right to extend my clenched fist stops short of your nose. Further extended, I have taken license. License in legal terms is permission to perform an act that without said license would be illegal. So everything under license is illegal but it's OK - the State takes their cut and Ethics is swept under the rug. :) Same church different pew in computerland. lol So you do what you do and let the others make it easier for people to go full FOSS, or not.

You have misunderstood what FOSS is about. Linux was not created for people to use Wine and Windows applications. If you like Windows applications, just use Windows. I find it really strange that you have your own RU-vid channel about Linux, but that you run lots of Windows applications on Linux. That kind of defeats the purpose of using Linux. Also, it really isn't that hard to have your computer run without closed source firmware. In most cases you just have to swap out your wifi card. In practice it doesn't matter whether you have a Wifi6 card or N card. Most people doesn't have an internet connection faster than N, and if speed is a concern, use Ethernet.
@DrowningInTea

In your opinion, what is the "purpose" of using Linux? Maybe some people think Linux runs faster, or they don't want to pay for a Windows licence for their new PC, or they simply don't like how Windows works?
