Even though this video is several years old, it's still pretty much the same. Thanks for this though .. I think this is what I was looking for. Trying to narrow my scanning at times.
Doug, Many thanks for clearing up the "quick keys" problem. What name to add to the "system", what name to add to the "site". I've been using the "e-z grab" function of FREESCAN because I'm a beginner to the new DMA scanners. My last scanner was a 895XLT, which I bought in the late 1990's. Now have a 996T and it's taken me a month or so of UNlearning all that I knew about scanners. Your RU-vid videos [and your website] have helped a lot! Vry 73 de Alain
Thanks for the video. I've been out of the scanner hobby for some years and just now getting back in using a Uniden BCD996P2. The last time I had a scanner, they had less programmable frequencies, and you might have 30 programmable channels in each 'bank' (maybe 10 banks...?). Are these newer scanners set up the same way? Just based on my observations, it seems like those 'banks' of programmable channels no longer exist? Have they now replaced by what I"m seeing referred to as 'systems' and 'groups'??? Thanks.
Can't I use freescan to setup a system on a startup key at once or do I have to add each group to the startup number 1 at a time ? Can't I add the entire system at once to a startup? There are 103 groups .
I recently purchased the BCD396xt. Having problems so I decided to use the info here. Seems to work, but when I loaded it. It told me I had 11 errors. Do you have any idea where to look for the errors? I loaded Franklin County and surrounding Counties. Thanks for the help.
The BCD436HP and BCD536HP are unsupported and will never be supported. This according to this link given here. K4DPS, is there a link that supports 536? I appreciate your demonstration. Thanks, N8FUN
a note for anyone coming to this in the year 2024 or recently. Radio Reference requires you to be a PREMIUM subscriber to connect from a tool. its sad but true
Excellent info! I've been considering the 396XT but not sure if I should. My county of interest is Allen County Indiana. All PD and fire is encrypted. Is there any reason I should get a digital scanner?
Hi, Will this FreeScan software work on the Uniden BCD325P2? And if I want to keep it simple and just load all the police/fire/statepolice/etc. for say the state of New Hampshire is that possible rather than loading individual frequencies which would take forever? Thank you in advance for your reply
you have to buy the premium service which is 15 bucks for 180 days of access. Just set up an account and than you can upgrade it to premium. It is well worth it if it has your area, as it comes presorted and configured with all the group IDs named and set into quick keys. As close to plug and play as you can get.
I have Win 8.1 and Freescan won't connect to Radioreference.com. It keeps giving me a message unable to connect check your internet connection or you entered a wrong user id or password. The view in a browser icon does nothing as well. Anyone else having the same issue?
mamaw4t First make sure your radio works with that software I use ARC XT PRO and that works fine for me. I tried using other software and no luck but I am using the Uniden BCD996P2
I had the same 'wrong userid and password' issue using both ARC XT Pro and Freescan. I logged on to RadioReference and checked what they showed as my user id. I pluged that into both ARC XT Pro and Freescan and now it works. I had been using my email address as the userid (which does let me logon to RadioReference), but that isn't what is needed for the RadioReference database logon from the scanner software. Hope this helps someone.
FreeScan doesn't work with the BCD436HP / BCD536HP, you will need to use Sentinel software or program it manually. Take a look at these videos, they should help: Uniden BCD436HP creating a favorite list Uniden Bearcat BCD536HP Favorite List Programming
I was taught that if you are teaching something new to someone, you should explain it as if you are speaking to Elementary school children. Sorry about the “overexplaining” Robert.
FYI, once you are done with all the quick keys, click UPLOAD to scanner, not download from scanner. If you download, you will have to reimport and setup everything again.
You can do it manually if you dont have a RR account. They have everything you need on the site; you just have to track it down and enter it all manually. I'm in Greenwood, SC, and have almost all the sites in my half of the state programmed. Still won't hear anything though, until you program in the Talkgroup IDs. But again - its all on their website. Go to RadioReference.com, click on Databases, click on SC on the map, then your county for the sites, and Palmetto 800 page for the statewide sites and talkgroups.
Hey K4DPS, thanks for putting up these videos because they really help. Unfortunately, I'm trying to help my uncle set up his Uniden BC396XT using freescan but it has been a major pain. I paid for the subscription and uploaded everything just like you show in the video but when I go to the system and attempt to listen to our local PD, the chatter is VERY limited (almost none at all but randomly will hear about 5 secs of chatter). We live in Phoenix, AZ so I am positive there is more communication going on than what is coming through. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong? We are using the stock antenna, could that be the problem?
Hello, I need someone to help me, I programmed my Uniden BCD396XT using freescan software before and didn't have any problems I was able to listen everything but then I reprogrammed it and added extra Systems, sites and groups and now it scans but it doesn't pick up any signal I don't hear anything at all, I even did a factory reset and reprogrammed it again and still doesn't pick up any signal, I tried the weather scan and it does work I can listen to that so it isn't the antenna or speaker, I watched several videos on RU-vid and did the programming exactly the same way and still nothing, the first time I programmed it 2 years ago when I bought it I didn't have this problem I successfully programmed it, Io also tried to program my mobile scanner BCD996T and same problem it scans but no signal, iit seems to me that maybe there is a problem with freescan software? Please help!
The setting the battery and then the distance to recieve. Now priority. And custom settings. And in the middle learning battery tecnology. And have 2 books one with scanner and one made by some one sold with scanner. Wow. Going to try to set priority now watched your you tube. I am learning lots. Have to clear out my favorite have duplicates. And sure think I want to devide it up fire, polce by dept. And so on and on. You suure are helping.
K4dps you sure know your stuff. I am lost. P21 and P25 SYSTEMS. tones and even priority. So hard. I only want about 20 channels and I wish ther was a way for older people to get it. Or hire a set up from some one to send it ro me. Please look at Peoria city, county, il the new P21 on there but ai tryed. And I kind of have it working but not the P21 system. Even the emd director can't program his new BC any idea to help us. I hope to find help
Thanks Ronald. I made these videos to help us all when it comes to these new scanners. The days of looking up our frequencies in Betty Bearcat or Police Call and entering them into our scanners are over. What scanner model are you trying to program?
Never ever new why life flight had issues talking on there dial up radio to the fire and police. The pl tones they didn't have? Having fun. Again thank you for your help
