Using G/Flex Epoxy to Repair a Badly Damaged RV Black Tank

I put a floor jack through the bottom of a black tank and badly damaged it. Getting a new tank was taking months, with no end in sight. So I ordered some G/flex 655 epoxy and some fiberglass mat, and fixed it myself. I am now a big fan of G/flex. It makes a thick, strong surface and binds strongly to the tank, which is made of ABS plastic, but G/flex works on a wide variety of surfaces. The repair cost me about $115, whereas a new tank would probably have been over $1,000 after purchase, shipping and installation fees.
Choose the size according to how much damage you need to repair. After finishing my repair I had used about one quart, so I have more for later if needed. There are smaller sizes than the 2 qts. that I ordered. The link above will get you to the product, and you can browse from there to other sizes or types if needed.
West Systems (the makers of G/flex) makes several different kinds of epoxy. The one I used was G/flex 655 "Thickened" Epoxy. The other types may have worked too, but I didn't investigate those since the 655 looked like it was exactly what I needed.

Nice work. I've used gflex on all kinds of plastics with good success. They even have a west system video where they chain saw a plastic kayak in half and glue it back together with gflex, then proceed to drop it from an over pass. They dropped it on its sides and tip, then paddled it without leaks.. Another benefit of gflex is it will cure in the presence of mousture.. I'm going to use it to glue replacement threaded fittings on my fresh water tank which have cracked

I saw that west system video. Incredible. And after seeing what it did for this black tank, I don't doubt that the video is accurate. It's great stuff. Not cheap, but I didn't want anything cheap holding a black tank together, lol.

@@MTMiser That's so awesome! Your video inspired us to buy Gflex and have it on hand just in case anything happens to our tanks.

I have an abs panel on my coleman popup. Someone backed up onto it at my storage location and cracked the abs panel. I don't want to replace the entire front panel since expensive. I was looking at different obtions like MEK with abs pellets. Also saw someone melting ABS plastic with acetone. I saw someone had mentioned this G/flex and saw your video. This may work well. I will look into cost but since my repair is on outside want it to be neat so not sure if this stuff can be sanded down and then painted? Thank you again for posting.

I did sand this down and paint it after making this video. I wasn't too concerned about aesthetics though, since it was on the bottom of the trailer. If you put it on as smoothly as possible and then sand it, I think it could be made to look fine.

So did the repair hold up? I know it's only been two months.

Hi Lee - yes. So far so good. As you said, it hasn't been long, but the trailer's been driven about 300 miles since then and still no leaks. I'd be surprised if it ever leaked. That G/Flex stuff combined with the fiberglass mat really makes a solid repair.

Thanks for the update. I've got a leaking black water tank fitting, and I'm thinking of using G/Flex to seal it up. Good to hear that it is working well!

Was this tank HDPE?
@MTMiser

No, it was ABS. But G/Flex might work on HDPE as well. They say it works on many different types of plastic. You can call the company that makes it and ask them - 1-866-937-8797, 9am-5pm Eastern US time.
