Using i-Type Film In Your Polaroid SX-70

Hey y'all welcome back. Yes, I am back in school and I'm ready to get more content out for you guys. For a couple months now I've been getting comments and messages about how do i shoot i-type film in my Polaroid SX70. I've always told people about it through social media but not everyone has that so I figured I'd make a video about how to do it so you guys at home can do the same. Thanks!

▶︎ About Me: Follow me, Derrell Lopez, as I and my Polaroid cameras go on an adventure through life. I have been shooting with Polaroid for years and I want to share all of it with you and show you what I see through my lens. I will try and travel places here and there all while filming it and showing you a glimpse of my personal life and what I do with a Polaroid in my hand. Some of those include, photoshoots, photo walks, traveling, and capturing meaningful memories in a white frame. I'm happy to share with all of you the steps I take as I go through the perplexing paths of what we call life and the memories I make along the way.

Thanks so much for putting this out there. I've been shooting an SX-70 for years and doing this never occurred to me. And I just bought 10 packs of black frame I-type. Will definitely be doing this with that. People like you are why I pay for internet.

I just wanna write in that I tried the battery mod, but I think there are better options. I could never get it thin enough to fit comfortably in the camera. I didn't wanna force the cartridge in. Your best bet in my opinion is to reload old SX-70 film packs. I just did it in my basement with all the lights turned off (even forgot to tape over the smoke detector LED and that doesn't seem to have affected it at all). It took a few tries to get perfect (practice with some already shot pictures a few times just so you know where things could get stuck). Took about 10 minutes and worked perfectly. I had some I type lying around from when I owned a new Polaroid body before I got my SX-70 that I didn't want to go to waste. To me shooting with a plastic lens ruins the whole experience. The quality of the SX-70 lens is a must-have. Also remember that the dark slide goes in one specific way (you can tell by the tab at the bottom. There's a slot for it in the film pack). I think reloading old film packs is a far less risky method IMO.

Really cool, never thought of physically taking the battery out and taping onto another cartridge. I'll have to try that. If anybody wants to know another way to do this, you can take an I-Type cartridge and a standard SX-70 cart into a dark changing bag or a darkroom (whichever is available) and just load each I-Type frames into the Sx-70 cart 1 by 1. I usually do this with anti-static gloves to not mess up the unexposed frames with my fingers. Make sure put the dark slide too. Its a good way to save some $ on Polaroid film.

This... changes everything. They don't even sell 600 film in stores around where I live, only i-type. Now I can go like "Hey can we stop by this store so I can get some film?" for any event instead of ordering online in advance, and it's cheaper on top of that! Thanks so much! Pro tip: This works for 600 cameras as well, but it'll be a tighter fit. Especially if you're using a one600. You need to make sure it's flush as HELL for it to go in, and no matter how well you do it you will have to force it in the last bit

I just did this and I'm not a fan of it. Couple tips, BEFORE INSERTING THE PACK make sure to take a razor blade and cut the 3 plastic protruding tabs on the bottom of the itype pack. Be sure to cut them completely off so the bottom is completely flush. There should be 2 small tabs, and 1 big tab in the middle. These tabs can bump something internal, not allowing the pack to slide in all the way. When inserting, it's a very VERY tight fit. When removing it, it pulled out 1/3 of the way before getting stuck. I broke open the flap where the film exits on the pack, then removed the large spring. This allowed me to squeeze the top and bottom, compressing the plastic pack. It was still difficult, but I finally got it out. Investigating, I found the circle cutouts on the remaining cardboard where the battery contacts are, got clipped by the cameras metal contacts. I will not repeat this as it will definitely bend this camera contacts eventually. Next time I'll be unpacking the itype film, and reinserting them into the sx70 pack.

Exactly what I was looking for! One question: Is it actually necessary to remove the cardboard? Seems to me like the thickness ends up pretty much the same either way? I've been trying a few times to transfer the film from i-type to a regular 600 cartridge, but there's always been strange artifacts on the images afterwards, probably because I press down on the wrong place in the dark 😛 I was looking into battery holder systems, but I've already spent too much on a 600-type conversion and service of my camera at Retrospekt for me to drill holes or tape something onto it 😛

I find it easier to remove the black cardboard piece, even just a little thickness taken out helps a lot when taking and inserting the film in the sx70 :)

A quick question. Could you take the battery from the empty cartridge and simply tape the entire battery section to the base of the I-type cartridge?

I’ve tried it before, I assume you mean without trimming, if so, I tried it before and it worked but it made it super hard to pull out of my camera which resulted in it almost getting stuck so I found it easier to trim it down so that there’s less thickness to it!

On the last shot I noticed the same damage that my SX-70 camera produced. I thought it was a film error. Looks to be a camera error or all film has the same error regardless of format.

That’s just a film error, I’ve seen it quite a couple time in my time of shooting with Polaroid, it’s just something you get used to after awhile.

New to these cameras... If I use this method for and old OneStep camera (which has no battery inside), should i use the ND filter?

Depends on what kind of OneStep! If it’s a 600 OneStep camera then you won’t need an ND filter since they both shoot at 640 ISO. If you’re shooting with an SX70 OneStep then yes, using an ND filter will help with the ISO difference!

I usually exchange it after 4 or 5 packs so that the battery is refreshed often!

About how many times can you do this before the battery dies? I dont want the battery to die with half a pack in the camera

The most I do is 5 packs then I rotate it out. I’m sure you can do way more but I do five just so my camera is always powered up (fast motor)

does the ND filter directly over the film affect quality of the print? Traditionally, the ND filter would be put over the lens, right?

In my experience, the ND filter doesn’t affect the quality of the photos I shoot, there was one instance where there was a small bend in the filter and ended up showing up on the photos, but I just switched it out for a new one. Hope this helps!

Yes, if you’re going to be shooting any iType in he sx70, using an ND filter will compensate for the ISO difference

tried it with a monochrome i-type cartridge, it won't go further than almost the middle in my '72 SX-70... don't want to put more force and possibly damage the camera... perhaps the later models had more space in?

I’m not sure, possibly. There are many ways to stick things on. Maybe some kind of adhesive would work but I find clear tape to do the job as I can remove it and stick it on another pack!

Unfortunately, they are a little harder to find these days. I would keep a lookout every so often in case anyone is selling any.

Is your camera a 600 type converted SX70 or have you had any experience using a converted one? Places like Brooklyn Film Camera and Retrospekt do conversion for most SX70 types and this hack would come in handy to almost be able to natively use itype in these cameras.

How. Do you know when to switch batteries. And do you do this in the field? Or do you open all the packs and do this first

@@Zetaphotography usually I’ll switch it if the motors start slowing down, you can hear it, a fresh battery powers the camera faster, after awhile that goes down and I just switch it out. I do this when I want to, if I’m feeling like getting crisps photos with my SLR.

Another method is to load the ITYPE film to an empty 600 pack using a portable darkroom bag.
