Thank you a lot! I took your video about the raspberry spectrometer as an inspiration to build my first USB spectrometer. It works great, but was not suitable for the LIBS. Thank you for your Videos, they are great!

@@AdvancedTinkering Thanks! I have been interested in LIBS for a while, but money and other projects got in the way. I do have a couple of ex tattoo lasers I bought and refurbished years that will find their way into some interesting projects though. No, it is not suitable for LIBS, not sensitive enough, and no way to gate the camera either. I am looking forward to seeing more on this! Subbed!

Did you include a sensor spectral calibration curve? If so, your spectra should match the NIST results pretty well.

Are the 2K or better webcams sensitive enough for use? Excellent work! Thanks for sharing! Way cool. Looking forward to more. Any thoughts of like ICP or other sample presentation methods? Maybe concurrently sweeping with a polarizing lens for more dimensions of info?
@AdvancedTinkering
@AdvancedTinkering 2 года назад
Thank you! No, I don’t think a Webcam will be sensitive enough. And I don’t think you will be able to gate the camera. There is a very tiny window where you get the discrete spectrum. If you want to know more about the timescales and many other aspects regarding LIBS I can recommend: “Handbook of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy” by David A. Cremers and Leon J. Radziemski Yes I have thought about ICP and about arc atomic emission spectroscopy but I haven’t had the time to try it.

Hi there. Well done, your system seems pretty neat. How are you delaying the triggering of the spectrometer? what sort of resolution you get with the detector? how many pixels does it have? I guess is not sensitive in the UV, where most of the info for LISB is Thanks Leonardo Pantoja
@AdvancedTinkering
@AdvancedTinkering 2 года назад
Hi, I am glad you like it! The triggering gets delayed by the software. Right now it is using a 5ms delay. I would have to calculate the theoretical resolution. The TCD1304 has 3648 Pixels. At the moment the spectrometer is only sensitive in the 400-600 nm range. I am thinking about widening the range by using a different diffraction grating.
@leonardopantoja8450
@leonardopantoja8450 2 года назад
@@AdvancedTinkering Hi there the TCD1304 is a ccd, not a cmos sensor. It is a bit noisy but with short integration time is fine. It is very difficult to get a different grating on your set up. The bench is made by BWTEK, it is a BRC100 design for the OEM market. Since you got the detector working is easier to change maybe for an ocean optics bench, those gratings are easier to get on the second hand market. I could not find the software in the link you provided. Thanks Leonardo
@JonathanMerten-wt1kd
@JonathanMerten-wt1kd Год назад
@@AdvancedTinkering by 5ms, you mean 5 microseconds, I suspect. The atomic emission portion of the plasma only lasts for a few tens of microseconds (if that)... you might see molecules after that for a few hundred microseconds, but the atomic emission is over.

It is an amazing project, thank you a lot for sharing. I only found this video now after 3 years of release. I have couple of questions: what is the actual spectral range of your spectrometer ? I see what the optical bench is from B&W Tek Raman system, with the original range of approx ~ 400- 650 nm. But I can imagine what for LIBS you need more range. And second question which laser do you use ? I understood what it is cannibalized tattoo removal system from Ali, but do you have any energy and pulse specs ?

Well done. I have a commercial Libs unit with a high resolution digital microscope at work. This might be a good further development for your system. We are doing qualitative an quantitative measurements with the systen. But we really have problems with repeatability regarding the quantitative measurements. Any Ideas on how to optimize that?
@AdvancedTinkering
@AdvancedTinkering Год назад
Thanks! But I can't help you with the quantitative analysis. I heard it is pretty challenging to get reliable quantitative measurements with a LIBS due to the many factors at play.

Hi, I can really recommend a book called “Handbook of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy” by David A. Cremers. There is a lot of helpful information in there. It is possible to get it through sci-hub. The laser is a “cheap” tattoo removal machine. aliexpress.com/item/4000192001099.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2deu The wavelength I used was 1064 nm.

Liked & subscribed. A totally awesome project! So glad to see a diy tinkerer with the technical skills to pull this off with a little help from another skilled collaborator. This is how awesome things get built, and it is a model for the kinds of progress that open source collaboration can create. QUESTION: I'd love to be able to analyze water samples on rural homesteads to see if there is groundwater & surface water pollution from sources such as RoundUp (Glyphosate). Do you think it might be possible to detect Glyphosate in water samples with a LIBS Spectrometer?
@AdvancedTinkering
@AdvancedTinkering 2 года назад
Thank you! Yes, without g3gg0s work on the software, this project would not have been possible. It is great when hobbyists get together and help each other! Regarding your question: I am not sure. It may theoretically be possible. But I highly doubt it would be practicable for a homemade machine and more important software. To evaluate and interpret the spectra would be really challenging.
@alanmcrae8594
@alanmcrae8594 2 года назад
@@AdvancedTinkering I guess that means that the spectra would tell us that there is C, H, N, O, and P present but no clear indication of relative proportions such as C3, H8, N, O5, P?
@AdvancedTinkering
@AdvancedTinkering 2 года назад
@@alanmcrae8594 Yes, you would probably also get spectra of other organic compounds that are created when vaporizing the sample. And quantitative measurements are very challenging in a DIY setup, because there are many variables to controll.

@@AdvancedTinkering Thanks for the feedback. I was just looking at OpenRAMAN and wondering if deriving concentrations of atoms from the height of the spectral peaks could translate into probable molecular structures?

I am no chemist but a quick search on Wikipedia tells me that Glyphosate is a white powder so I am guessing that one could get some Roundup, dry it then pelletize it and take a libs spectrum to characterize it. Then one could collect some of the suspect water, evaporate it and do a libs test on it and compare. That said however I suspect that the concentration of Glyphosate in the water would be so low compared to common salts in the water that it would be below the detection limits.

Just get the cheap glasses from abroad to a few bucks, they are fine and often have better angle coverage, and you can get a new pair if they get scratchy the best googles, you can get. are the ones you have on if sh*t hit the fence and why the cheap kind are ideal, as you can have a handfull laying around for like 10 bucks delivered. I also dont use laser glasses that got full protection, as Im not planning on standing infront of my Nichia 7W diodes for hours in stare dow contest. On visual laserf nm's I wanna see the beam.. its way more secure for you and the bystanders if you can see the beam, then not, and why full protection glasssed are not prefered in my book.. I want glasses that takes it down to a non harmfull level and give me that latitude until I can react, if it should strike my eyesight.. but I am also a sucker for laser beams.

You know project boxes can be purchased for less than the energy and materials that went into that 3D printed box, right? like, the clamping, sure that makes sense, but the box itself? 3D printing isnt the answer to everything yall.....
@AdvancedTinkering
@AdvancedTinkering 2 года назад
I know that project boxes exist. I used one in my ozone generator project. But in this case it was way easier to just print a case. To add all the features to an existing box would be more expensive and time consuming than printing it. Another upside is that I could choose the exact dimensions of the box. I agree that 3D printing is not the solution to everything. But I think in this case it was the best option for me.
