In this video, I show you how to use mesh tape for drywall repair! I was repairing a small patch of drywall and I used mesh tape to join the 2 pieces of drywall together! I also applied the first coat of mud to keep the mesh tape in place! I documented the entire process in this video!

Looked good for 1st coat, a bit of sanding/wet sponge and a couple more coats and it will be ready for primer/paint.

You should always use hot mud (Durabond) on your first coat over mesh tape to avoid a hairline crack down the middle of the joint (seam) use the premixed muds for your second and third coats.

You never want to overlap mesh tape.. Use mesh tape when doing fixes because it holds the mud in without it sinking in and having to apply coat after coat. When apply hot mud with mesh tape it becomes as strong as concrete. Anyways You apply it than fill it with hot mud (fast setting compound) add glue sense it doesn’t come with it in it unlike black mud If you wanna make it bind but don’t need to. Go over the mesh tape with a few coats pressing the mud into it, it will bubble out per say let dry and use knife to scrape the bubbles, apply another coat of hot mud. Let dry sand a little. Than apply all purpose mud to feather out the joint properly let dry and sand. You use all purpose last so it doesn’t flash the paint. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤷🏼‍♂️ how ive been taught to properly do a patch without cracking in the future and ive been taught by many many tapers and I’m in the trade. Framing, drywall, tape and pint have been for going on 4 years.

You're supposed to use setting type compound with mesh tape not general purpose. Once you've embedded the tape, then you can switch to an all purpose. Also, you want to use a relatively thick coat of setting type so it sets properly and results in a strong bond. This size patch will require a copious amount of mud and feathering to achieve the best result.

I've seen the general purpose mud used on so many job sites though and they don't seem to have a problem with it. But I've heard that you're not supposed to but yet out in the field I've actually seen people use the general purpose and not have any problems

you should fiberglass tape the up and downs before u tape the flats so when you are pulling the mud the fiberglass tape dont roll over and maybe pre fill with hot mud before you top coat it

Hi there, great vid, I want to tape and joint a ceiling inside a container home... The ceiling flexes by almost an inch along a 30 foot span when I'm walking on the roof for maintenance... Is there a special flexible mud I can use along with tape in the joins that will avoid cracking down the line. Thanks
@oldguysrock2170
@oldguysrock2170 2 года назад
You probably already completed your job since your post is a year old. In areas that flex or expand because of heat or cold, caulking works good. A lot more flexible than dry wall mud. Curious if you completed your project and how it turned out.

You can also repair that with no boards behind it. Use the paper from the drywall to bond to other drywall

I cut a piece of drywall out to look inside my walls (4' high and about 16" wide - between the studs)- I can fit the piece right back in where it was but I can't screw it in. I thought I could just pop it back in, tape it in place and mud and paint it. Now I realize that I'll probably push it in when I try to mud it. Should I cut the hole bigger to span the studs, cut a new piece and screw that on, etc? Thought it could just pop in and pop out. the piece I cut out fits perfectly - I guess I can use that plus the rest I cut out as a template on some drywall but if there's an easier way let me know. THANKS for your tips

put a piece of wood inside the hole you've made thats longer in length than width then hold it to the back of the plasterboard and drill it in on either side of the patch then youll have something to drill the cut out to

@phil14502
@phil14502 4 года назад
STRIKE ONE is that you didn't "bevel" (45 degree) all edges of each piece of board because ---- ANY AND ALL ---- CUT board has the paper beat up on EVERY cut some way. STRIKE TWO is that you didn't "prefill" any of your voids/gaps/holes.....and most importantly, STRIKE THREE is that you used regular mud with mesh tape. You need to use "Hot Mud"/"Durabond"/"Quick Setting Mud".....but don't feel bad.....NO ONE has EVER read the directions or instructions on the mesh tape package......and no one wants to be the first.

Wish I knew the mud you used. I have bought some before for repairs that was supposed to be better than regular mud, but the synthetic goop was harder to work with and would show pull gaps if you worked over it with more than one swipe.

I might not be correct, but I would press in a first coat of Durabond into the seams and wipe the sheet rock seams clean with damp cloth. Once the Durabond sets, then I put the mesh tape on and press a thin coat of joint compound. Once that sets, I do a light sand and a final coat of joint compound...then prime...then paint.

Everyone tapes these, but if the gaps are small why cant you just put the mud on in several coats then sand? I have done that before and never had a crack or issue and you dont have to build the mud up thick enough to cover the tape.

I've used Fiberglass mesh tape and regular joint compound. I've used tape. He'll I've used freaking Newspaper (Because that's all I had at the time) Guess what The world didn't fall apart I haven't had a single crack in over a year. I get sick of every a$$hole with an opinion on how to do drywall. Use this, no don't use this, etc etc. Every single video I have watched has a self described "Expert" who has a completely conflicting "opinion" from the next "Expert" Who gives a crap as long as you get the desired results. I just use mesh and regular joint compound on joints. Just add plenty of Mudd and sand and repeat. In the end it doesn't matter as long as the service is smooth. You paint over it and it is good

@@gatorr4life The gaps (edges) of the patch and the existing drywall should be shaved at angle to form a V. Then the gap aka "joint" should be prefilled. The the short joints taped, then long joint with NO overlap. Then Do NOT use all-purpose compound use fast-set, probably 90 minute for a novice. Apply more pressure on the first coat but don't wipe the tape dry. Feather the wet outside edge of the compound aka mud. And know when to walk away and let it dry. So let's recap. Wrong to use a bunch of chunks of drywall in the first place. This should be one piece with the back scored to conform to the existing curvature. Wrong tape. Wrong compound. Wrong taping direction. Wrong taping technique (overlap and not centered). Uneven knife pressure, unsteady strokes. Some can be totally forgiven; it is DIY after all. But if the initial solution (multiple chunks of board versus one piece), choice of materials used, and the application of the materials is wrong. Then people might try another solution. That's what makes it wrong in the persons opinion. Bless the guy for taking the time and effort to pitch in and one could follow this and make it work but damn... Just damn.
