Modern life is stressful, and in truth, most of us aren’t handling it well. In this informative talk, drawn from research in social work and religion, Dr. Regina Chow Trammel explores how the ancient practices of mindfulness can enable all of us to transcend the pressures of life. Learn how to gain mindfulness skills and make use of your whole capacity as a human being: body, mind, and spirit.
Dr. Regina Chow Trammel has a background in clinical social work practice, which includes more than a decade in private practice in the Chicago area, as well as experience in psychiatric and medical social work settings. Her area of clinical focus has been in the treatment of depression, anxiety, postpartum mood disorders, sexual abuse history, family conflict, self-injury, and eating disorders. Regina is an assistant professor in the Master’s of Social Work. Her research focuses on the effects of a Christian-informed mindfulness intervention as an alternative to traditional Buddhist-informed mindfulness on stress management.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

Conflict or collaborative, self centered to self aware. Mindfulness builds compassion for others. Anticipate the needs of others, decisions are reactive but mindful in how those decisions will play out. cause and effect - consequences. Do they help or hinder relationships for the well being of all. Breathing exercises. Center your self and gain clarity before making decisions. The past cannot be changed and the future cannot be forced and all we have is the present moment. In the present moment make the best decisions we can to benefit ourselves and others. It takes congruence. - agreement, harmony and comparability. Interpersonal relationship and soft skills, management and leaderships skills as well as accounting. Connect to our values and what we hold dear. Breath is the foundation of a mindfulness practice. Mindfulness fosters wellness. The ability to cope with stressors and bounce back. Mindfulness is a tool for self care. Take the time to refresh, connect with all aspects of ourselves. Religious based practices assisted with discernment and healing - maybe it was the togetherness in learning? Work in unison. Caring for yourself as you care for others. Self care. Breath and be mindful.

Most social workers do not educate people. Most stick to a script and cattle people in and out coldly. I have yet to mean anyone of warmth, love compassion, empowerment, support and educative.

Using Mindfulness to Deal with Everyday Pressures Me: OK, there's a lot of stuff I need to do. Work: Come on; we have Mindfulness training. Me: Now!? I have a lot of work to do. Work: It's not going to go anywhere. Me: But I need to get it done. Work: Never mind that! Just come to the room (with no natural light, pumped in air, lots of people in uncomfortable silence) Me: I really need to get this done today. Work: Now! ----------------------- *Sits in room, quietly thinking about all the work I have to do* Guru: Just relax In my head: I'd relax if I could finish my work. Guru: Just breathe In my head: Do you think I wasn't!? Guru: You are a mountain, a tree, a flower ... In my head: No. I. Am. Not. Guru: Don't let any outside influence bother you In my head: Like you? Guru: Just let go In my head: Of a fart? :D Guru: Find the focus of your stress and let go In my head: I was focused on my work. I don't think my employers want me to do that ---------------------------- *eventually, it finishes* Me: Great! That wasted an hour, it's almost clocking off time, and I still haven't finished that work. Work: Have you finished that work yet? Stay behind until you do. I'm off home, bye! Me: FFFFFuuuuuuuuuuuuuu....!!!

You can but unless there is a very large amount of noise and distraction it shouldn't be required. Those distractions can be used to advance your progress in mindfulness.

What if mindfulness makes one stressed? I don't need mindfulness, I'm not stressed, yet I'm forced to do it at school. It's compulsory.

If its making you stressed it isn't mindfulness practice. Noticing your own breath and sensations is a way to alleviate stress.
