Good lesson. Can you show some of those licks slowly and talk more about what you did over the 4 and 5 chord?
@niklassarri108
@niklassarri108 7 лет назад
One real easy way of making that change is to play your minor pentatonic but use the major six instead of the dominant seven. Instead of the note G you play an #F instead when the chord changes from A to D. Then what you have is ( in this case) a D9 arpeggio. The scale now is spelled: A-C-D-E-#F-A (instead of: A-C-D-E-G-A). If you rearrange the notes you get: D-#F-A-C-E. Now you can nail the change and it is impossible to play bad notes.
@dclan86
@dclan86 7 лет назад
Great lesson, you sound great, licks were great. But I hear a lot of people often refer to using the mixolydian for blues and that is kind of misleading. Though, the licks you were using are in the mixolydian scale, you are really doing what all major blues players did (SRV, BB, Clapton, etc), which is mixing the major and minor pentatonic together. You wont very often find someone just ripping sick blues licks out of a strict mixolydian scale. It basically has to have the minor notes in it somewhere to give it that deep blues sound. The Allman Bros are about as close as anyone got to a truly mixolydian blues sound imo.
@GuitarBluesHury
@GuitarBluesHury 7 лет назад
Yes!. Look this: Take Minor Pentatonic Scale, position 1 in A, overlap with position 2 of minor pentatonic scale in the key of F# (F# is the relative minor of A, also called Major Pentatonic Scale). What do you get?. ANSWER: Mixolydian Mode!. So, the equation would be: Minor Penta + Major Penta = Mixolydian. After that... it's all about approaching. I mean.... If you play Minor Penta and you use some Major Penta notes (like salt and pepper as I use to say) you will sound more "classic Blues" (BB King, SRV, etc). If you use more Mixolydian (same notes as before but playing them as a Scale) you will sound more Modal or Modern Blues (Matt Schofiled, Robben Ford...)... It's all about approaching. That's my personal way to think this :) Thanks!
@dclan86
@dclan86 7 лет назад
Indeed! Thanks for the more modern modal guy as well. I haven't heard much from them so I will certainly take a listen. Thanks for the input as well! Always good to share ideas. Great Lesson!

@@GuitarBluesHury great explanation of the pattern 1, yes I know that mixo blues pattern well, but I am a little confused with that run you did 4.42 into the vid, as it doesn't seem to fit within position 2 in parts. Hello Martin. I have noticed that the A mixolydian scale is exactly like the B natural min scale, and I use that as a reference just to remember. I have also noticed a nice sequence of modes related to the Minor 1st position. Ex: Ionian Amaj = 6th note of A maj = F#min scale Dorian Amaj = 5th note of A maj = E min So A Dorian is E min And so fourth 4th note A Maj is A phyrigian (D min) So many acquaint this relationship differently. Do you ever use this method, or do you stick just maj to maj position references when locating modes? Does it matter?
@GuitarBluesHury
@GuitarBluesHury 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for your comment! I think the modes as minor pentatonic scale plus or less some intervals. EX: Aeolian: Minor Pentatonic + 6b + 9. Dorian: Minor Pentatonic + 6 + 9. Mixolydian: Minor Pentatonic + 3rd + 6 + 9 (and I add minor 3rd if I want more bluesy sound)... and I do the same with the other modes...Thanks!
@midi1529
@midi1529 3 года назад
@@GuitarBluesHury Martin thanks for your reply about remembering the modes. Im actually still looking the actual changes to the maj scale to remember the modalities, I dont use the interval relationships all the time. Unless I am locating say, b2, b4, #4, #11, maj, min 7ths sometimes. Your suggestion may just be better for har min and melodic minor modes as i still have to memorize those more. I like you videos.. thanks
@guenz2K
@guenz2K 6 лет назад
Pfff, just say that mixolydian is the fifth degree of a major scale and everything turns easy. In C major, G is mixolydian: same notes, but you start on G instead of C. In the video, A mixolydian it's B minor or D major: same notes, different roots BUT SAME NOTES!
@GuitarBluesHury
@GuitarBluesHury 6 лет назад

@guenz2K

@Beijing King Well...C major scale (it's ionien) and G mixoldien shared the same notes. A progression of C-G-F, it's I V IV in C (cdefgab)major scale (ionien) but it's also IV I VII in G mixolidien scale (gabcdef) cdefgab it's C ionien (major) firt degree same notes has D dorien second degree of C ionien same notes has E phrygien third degree of C ionien same notes has F lydien etc.... same notes has G mixolydien etc... same notes has A eolien (Am scale aka the relative of C major scale) same notes has B locrien So now, take and key, build the major scale and use this trick above to find out the mode of each degree. Keep calm, it's gonna make sense in a while. There's also a lot a videos that will help you out. I hope it will helpful and sorry for my french's accent wich is still very outrageous even when I typing :-D

Could it be just rephrased as playing major (pentatonic) scale on top of minor 6 chords? It sounds like playing solo A B C# E F# on top of Am6 chord?
@GuitarBluesHury
@GuitarBluesHury 6 лет назад
Hi, if you wanna think it in another way... let's say you can play minor pentatonic scale adding major 3rd, 6th and 9th. It's like overlapping minor and major pentatonic scale (if you are in the key of A you can play position 1 of minor pentatonic scale in A with position 2 of minor pentatonic scale in the key of F#)... In that way you will play same shape as if you play mixolydian mode but think it in pentatonics. Hope is clear. Thanks!

Thanks, that's interesting. I mixed the mixolydian scale with the minor pentatonic in my scale engine and it said it was equivalent to the second mode of the bebop major scale - not sure if that mode has a name or not. I don't know of any known name for the scale you get when adding the extra flat 5 as well though. I was thinking about all this only yesterday.

Sorry if silly question but I’m new to using modes. If your mixing box 1 and mixolydian if you then go up the neck to box 2 do you still use same pattern of mixolydian or do you then use box 2 and Aeolian scale? Also is this used over a major or minor progression or both? Thank you for your time.
@GuitarBluesHury
@GuitarBluesHury 5 лет назад
Hi, Mixolydian mode is major scale but you have to flat the 7th. You will get 1 2 3 4 5 6 b7. If you want to play pattern 2, just continue with the same logic. You can't use mixolydian over minor progression. It just work over major dominant (because of the major 3rd and flat 7th). Over minor progressions I would suggest using Dorian mode. Thanks!
