Thanks so much for showing this, was wondering if I could do it, but I didn’t think it would show tracks and actually show your location so glad to know it should work.
As I get closer to going out on the water for the first time I'm getting a bit worried everyone keeps saying all the bad things that can happen but never good things I'm really hoping the navionics app will help me out thanks for all your vids very informative
I was about to spend £1500 on a chart plotter before lockdown. I'm so glad I didn't. We have Navionics on our 2 mobiles and son's tablet. It's absolutely brilliant. If you're teccy enough you can cast to a laptop and have it on a really big screen. Plus, we all effectively get to use our own chart plotter simultaneously while at sea. Strangely, the paper charts, compass etc also became far more interesting to my son when he could relate them to his 10" tablet screen!
I currently just use my mobile and cast to a laptop. It's absolutely brilliant. My son just has a cheap Samsung. Like the man above says, just make sure it's got GPS.
Hello. You know something I searching for.. Is it better to have navionics installed on a phone with android or iPhone operation system ? I need this answer for my new phone..
Hey mate. I have done exactly the same as you. Got a Samsung tablet and Navionics. It's a no brainer as you say. I also got a tablet at first which did not have GPS and swapped it for the current one. I have a Hunter Landau so can use a tablet mount suckered to my window in front of the helm. Great for Poole Harbour. Also have navionics on my phone as backup. My tablet is removable as I use it in my Freelander 2 with Maps Me installed (free) much better satnav than my car and bigger screen. I will make a sunshade for the tablet to minimise glare. Right on. Dave
you can leave it connected to the usb plug all the time, it will not over-charge, its got battery management, you are thinking about rechargable batteries of the nienties which tended to have that problem.
OK thanks for that I was always lead to believe keeping a device 100% charged will end up killing battery life as they are made to go between about 30 and 70% that's there Happy spot . But thanks for the information
It really is the way forward compared to dedicated stupidly priced marine plotters. I use a samsung tab A6 in waterproof case with suction mount on mine. Doubles up for entertainment also. Plus the latest update allows the use of wifi ais signals if you install a transponder.
Nice one Salty, that's just what I was looking for. On my voyage to this point, I came across a guy with an unbelievable set up on his boat, it must have cost ££££'s, and could probably sail itself, and even park. I had no idea there was that amount of gadgetry. If your slightly interested it was this; Navigation Gear and Electronics for a Cruising Sailboat. Thanks again for your realism. Cheers
Your welcome don't get me wrong now if I was minted ide have some truly amazing gear on my boat but for the price it's a absolute no brainer for me the features on the app is second to none hope it helps you
Also want to say that was a great video and maybe could you do a video around the same amount of time but to a destination. I would like to see you navigate to a destination using the App . I'm imagining you in your boat with maybe some passengers and headed to a destination like a restaurant or something.
For iPads, you need to get the one that is labeled as Wifi + Cellular. That is the one with gps in it. Has nothing to do with new or old iPad as even the iPad 1 could do gps if you got the cellular version (called wifi + 3g back then). I used my iPad for navigation and it works great with no add-on gps dongle.
@@czopekrz - if you get one without the gps (the wifi+cellular version) they won’t work unless you pair it with something that does have a gps chip like a phone or external gps. Otherwise it will only show maps when you are connected to wifi like in your home.
I have bought iBoat to do the same thing . Navionics is far more superior. I use a Meberry 10 inch tablet I habe bought the Rokk kit to install it to the boat.
Thanks John, Very very useful. About 11 minutes in you said if you fell into some money you might buy something different that dances and sings (I don't remember your exact words); what would that be and what would it do better or what additional functions? Thanks
Only reason I would change is one if I come in to some money I would buy simrad evo 3 nss12 with halo radar all the same functions but all in one unit with track radar with bird function 😂. But not cheap. Only problem with the tablet is the screen in sun light can be hard to see sometimes but I'm still more than happy with it as it's only the odd day
You don't need a gps enabled iPad, if your iPad doesn't have gps just buy a gps dongle and connect to Bluetooth. Cheaper than buying a new ipad and works the same.
You can buy a WiFi GPS receiver and pair it with your device if your tablet or iPad doesn't have a built-in GPS. About $150 Canadian dollars buys you one.
I'm going to ask a very stupid question, lol I take it you bought the UK-Ireland or did you take the Europe package? I see a border line of coverage for the Europe package and it doesn't seem to cover any of the South of England. Which is a pity for those that leave from UK heading towards Europe, but still well worth the cash. Thanks for the review bud! legend!
I see its great for mapping. Is there an accessory for iPad that would allow integration of a GPS location on the map? Something like GLO2 from Garmin? Or is it for just mapping? Forgive my ignorance in advance.
Hi, Great video. I'm trying to do exactly what you are doing in this video. Using a tablet to run navionics without cell service or wifi. The people at Samsung have no idea about tablets that have the GPS enabled feature to run navionics. My research suggests that the sumsung Tab A model SM-T290 might work or the Dragon Touch K 10" tablet but I can't confirm this with any technical support. Would you be able to determine if any of these models will do what you are doing with the navionics app. Thanks for your help....great videos!! Tom
Dragon Touch Max 10 - did not work for me! First off - "THANK YOU" to Beach and Boat Fishing for making this video. I hadn't realized this was even an option. I'm working on the device now to enable this on my boat as it will be so much better than navigating from my expensive Garmin unit with 5" screen or from my iphone. Now regarding the Dragon Touch Max 10. I bought a Dragon Touch Max 10 from amazon about 3 weeks ago to do this solution as all my research said it would work for this and reviews said they could do remote navigation using the device. However, I was not able to get it to work remotely without wifi connected at all. It works fine and screen was great with navionics when I had wifi signal. As soon as I turned wifi signal off or was out of wifi signal range, the tablet where we were on the navionics maps. NO matter what we tried, we could not get navionics to work without wifi on the Dragon Touch Max 10. I contacted Dragon and they said that device is an assisted GPS model only and must have Wifi signal in order for the GPS to work. Since I liked the tablet, I then bought an external GPS with hope I could use the Dragon and connect via bluetooth to the Garmin external GPS so I could work around the GPS. The Dragon Touch would not maintain a bluetooth connection to the external GPS antenna so that solution would also not work. Based on this, I returned the Dragon Touch Max 10 as it's advertizing regarding it's GPS capabilities is misleading but I will likely get another tablet like the samsung suggested since we know it works. Good luck with the solution. Having a 10" map is so helpful especially on a budget cost.
@@robertbeliech6589 @Tom Lafleur quickly checked that dragon device, find this out.. "The Dragon Touch K10 tablet comes equipped with 16GB of internal storage along with a microSD card slot that can accept memory cards up to 64GB in capacity to expand its digital storage space. Integrated GPS sensor makes navigation possible when you download an offline map to the tablet." So i think u will be fine, if you download maps while in wi-fi.
Navionics is better than my Lawrence, but I used to have a hard time seeing the tablet in the day, and then too bright at night, blinds you. So I end up w the Lowrance with night mode and bright in the day light. (I have no cabin in the boat, direct sun) . I'd like to give the tablets a chance again if anyone has a fix for these problems or knows a tablet thats super bright.
I was able to find some similar on amazon when I searched for "tablet security case holder". www.amazon.com/s?k=tablet+security+case+holder&ref=nb_sb_noss_2
Hi bud. Thinking of going same route do you need it plugged into power constantly as I believe tablets don't last long due to GPS being battery hungry. Is it OK to have the tablet plugged in all day or while it damage it after a while. Cheers
1:01 you say pretty much any Samsung. Well I can tell you now, the Samsung Tab A8 does NOT have any GPS sensor. I found out the hard way, and had to buy a different tablet
@@thesaltyboat9422 Yeah I did, and the internet lied to me. I told the guy in the store that I needed to double-check, cos he couldn't confirm it. Well I looked online and found 2 sites saying yes it had GPS. No, no it doesn't. You need to rip off the cellophane and read the maker's own manual for the specs, because even the Samsung box mentioned nothing about a GPS sensor. My point is you really need to double or triple check, and don't trust websites showing specs. They're not official and make crap up, plus some models do have GPS on the top-end version but the WiFi or smaller memory models don't. Don't presume a major brand name like Samsung and being brand new means it has a real GPS sensor. Most just use cell tower triangulation, with no actual GPS, which will NOT work at sea.
Will the app out on the water tell you how you're positioned/direction you'll be facing to the particular spot/structure? Thinking about doing this on my kayak.
@@thesaltyboat9422 Thanks! I recently saw on another channel by Tom Zananko, he was able to link his tablet along side 2 of his other plotters and was able to add a small window of his 2d sonar on the tablet. Have you tried this, or have any idea how he was able to link them? My HDS 9 is just too small for me to fit my nav map, while running structure scan, along with 2d and downscan all at the same time. It's very unfortunate Lowrance doesn't have shortcut keys for the gen 3. Cheers!
@@pywifishingandoutdoors I can do it on my dragon fly unit they have to have the sharing function on it so all depends what sonor you have but mine is 7inch and find it's big enough for what I need
@@thesaltyboat9422 Oh bummer, and it turns out for Lowrance, you need a Tbox ducer to be able to relay the 2d sonar onto the tablet. Thanks for sharing!
Ais it can as for radar I'm not 100% sure ide emagen it could work but ide think the kit needed to do so would be more expensive than a radar unit it's self . For example the ais app that you can buy as a overlay is £15 But if you buy the ais unit instead it's about £700 "ocean signal atb1" So tbh ide guess radar you would ovo need a radar dome then if the convertor kit to link to app is approx same price as the ais one would be cheaper to buy a stand allows radar unit.
Thanks for the reply, I was looking at the 8 inch Samsung tab a 2019, reasonable price, whats your thoughts on whether id need wifi or LTE version? Jim
Is the app free I can't find one on iPhone that you pay for I will look on my Samsung phone cheers mate I'm looking for a good fish finder but I don't know what is a good one for the price
Yes pay for the app maps/ charts come with it. Maps/chart is downloaded over WiFi when you download the app you select what area you would like to use for offline use
It's a one off payment for the year you don't have to renew it at the end of the year if you don't want to but you will lose some of the features of it but it will still work but for me I think it's worth it year In year out 100%
Hello, I just downloaded the mobile app for Android. I created my account and wanted to try it before buy it. However, the app immediately showed a message saying "Free trial expired".
I think it's very good if your looking for new marks to fish. But if you already know the area you fish really well then it's just a gimmick but it 100% looks good and can make for much easer viewing
@@thesaltyboat9422 I think the great thing is some wrecks are clearly visible but the wreck mark can be out by quite a distance. I’ve not used it yet, so will see 👍🐟
@@123boat yes very true but most charts navionics being one of them the detail on the chart will show the wreck with line contour anyways so when u role up to a wreck marker but there's lots of contors 500 yards off that's where the wreck IS
@@thesaltyboat9422 Still looking forward to trying it out. I do have a garmin fish so will be using that as well 👍 Cheers for the info. Might see you out there 😁
@@thesaltyboat9422 Thanks a million got the app bought the map and walla perfect , a couple of months ago i went out and bought a Humminbird Helix 7x MSI GPS G3N for id rather not say in case the ultimate boss lady reads this ( the wife ) with maps and the Navionics map on the Tab is much better quality much easier a better screen so yeh it perfect and will sit beside the Humminbird to get me to where i want , i only have a small 17 foot Wilson boat so happy days and thank you for your imput and opinion 100%happy with it , :-)
Hi long as it has gps it will work. They one I'm using is Samsung galaxy tab 3 gt-p5210 but it's quite a old tablet now not sure if there is better now.
@@snapon1948 defo don't need phone connection but will need to conect to wifi to download the app then no internet is needed just GPS signal for location
Beach and Boat fishing thank you... I think it has to be plugged in the whole time while out to sea. So I don’t lose navigation on sleep mode if on a battery.
@@henryxavier3751 I leave mine on all day when at sea I've turned of sleep mode so stays on all time But a full battery will last almost all day so a sub point is a must have
My tablet stays in the cab all the time yes granted on accations it can still be hard to see but if that's the only down side ones or twice a year for me it's a no brainer in my eyes
