Using ND filters with an iPhone is a great way to get cinematic motion blur - especially when used in conjunction with a Moondog Labs Anamorphic Adapter.
In this video we take a look at different types of ND filters and different shooting scenarios using them.

👍🏼 Nicely done with clear and succinct comparisons. Great job as usual! For the record, though... motion blur has more to do with the natural perception of the human eye, than being "cinematic". As a film school alumni (I refuse to name drop, but Trojans rule!), I've come to cringe whenever I hear RU-vidrs overuse that term. Many great directors have used the strobe effect in excellent feature films, including Ridley Scott and Stephen Spielberg, to name a couple. Just my 2 cents. 😁

Thanks! And sure, we’re talking in general terms here about motion blur and primarily related to mobile video. Pretty much all of it has no motion blur since it’s exposure is being controlled by the auto shutter and it is an instant giveaway (and often looks bad). So we highly suggest ND filters. We have other videos talking about where fast shutter though IS good and when you should/could use it like in action scenes or fight scenes, etc. Just not in “everyday” videos. In movies it’s often using a 45 degree shutter angle to get this look. The classic example is of course Saving Private Ryan. 🎥👍🏻

As I do a lot of work with mobile phones I think that by the time you get a wooden camera rig for the phone a moondog lens adapter, a filter adapter and the ND you should have already spent more than the price of a Sony 6500 or a GH5. And the quality between phones and real cameras is not comparable...
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 лет назад
Not exactly. You already own the phone either way, so it’s not an extra expense. The accessories here are about $300. A GH5 body is about $1700. No lens. Our favorite way to shoot though is a more stripped down version. Ease of use and portability mixed with quality are keys for us. But of course no one here is talking about using phones to replace a GH5 or any other “professional” camera. We use them as an additional tool to our other gear, which includes Blackmagic, Canon, Sony and a RED camera. Today though the latest phone footage is definitely comparable to many cameras, with limitations like easily getting shallow DOF. But with computational imaging upon us (and only really just beginning) the overall quality is really going up (dynamic range, low light, etc) and only going to get better.

Great Video! I'm curious though, why use an anamorphic adapter lens when filmic pro offers a 2.39:1 aspect ratio? Is using one better than the other and why?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 6 лет назад
The 2.39:1 aspect in Filmic Pro simply crops the top and bottom of 16x9 video, so it’s just letterboxing it. This is fine for some stuff, but it is not true widescreen video like shooting with an anamorphic lens. The other thing is shooting anamorphic you get cool lens flares and oval bokeh (although bokeh is harder to achieve with a smartphone). Filmic pro does offer a nice feature when using anamorphic adapters where it will desqueeze it for you in the app. Not only for preview, but for the actual saving of the files. Otherwise when you import the footage into your editing software it will look stretched. You can desqueeze it there too, but it’s one less thing to worry about using the app.

My experience is that fader/variable ND filters do not work in practice with wide angle lenses (on phone or on normal camera). One sees "cross fade" or "x-fade" meaning the image is variably-faded because in fact the variable ND is just two polarizing filters mounted together, and wide angle lenses bring in too much off-axis light to tolerate the polarization. What's your experience? I had to return my variable ND and get a set of single-density units.
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 4 года назад
The higher quality ones like from PolarPro or B+W do better, but yes, you can definitely get the dreaded X especially with wider lenses. They are nice for quick adjustments though versus having to screw on different ND. Though for the very highest quality results solid ND are the way to go. Agreed.

Hi I am a beginner, I’ve been following your site and really enjoy your videos. I thought I had a clear understanding of what LUTs are until I went to purchase one of your packs, and then the confusion started. I thought a LUT pack was loaded into you editing software of choice, in my case “LumaFusion”. Why then would you need LUT for the software you shoot with (FilMc Pro or Moment) or for the tool you shoot with, iPhone ? I don’t understand. I will be shooting on an iPhone X with a Moment anamorphic lens. Can you help me better understand how, when and where to use/apply your LUTs.

Great tutorial. Anyway, I am questioning the urgent need to have an ND for my iPhone. Instead, I apply some motion blur in Davinci Resolve as first node in my post workflow - et voila, everything looks great as if shot with slow shutter speed. On my Lumix S1H it's a completely different thing: w/o ND filter the image gets such overexposed in the viewfinder and monitor that it impossible to watch.
@iphoneographers

Yeah you can definitely add motion blur in post and for a lot of stuff it works fine. But some it doesn’t (like fast motion), however, it’s a great thing to have the option to do. Thanks for watching!

@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 лет назад
For bright sun we tend to use ND1.2 the most at 4-stops. A close second would be ND9 at 3-stops. These numbers relate to the Tiffen filters we mainly use. We also really like the PolarPro IRIS ND system that clips on an iPhone. Very easy system to use and you get 3 filters. It’s for using the native camera lens only though, no third-party lenses. Link in the video description. Never tried GOBE. Hope that helps!

If you’re shooting using and ND filter on two different days or throughout the day, do you need to use the same filter for the images to match throughout the film? Is there a post production technique that mitigates the difference you may see? Thanks
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 4 года назад
It would be ideal to keep the filter the same along with the white balance. You can however correct this in post with color balancing. However filters (like lenses) can add “texture” and character to a shot that is much tougher to replicate later.

Or is better to make/buy an ND filter? *And 2:* In low-light situation, when I am forced to use the slower shutter and highest ISO, putting a light source could save the scene, but I have to bring up the shutter before the ISO, just to make it smoother, but compromising the quality?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 6 лет назад
Hi, thanks for watching! You can add motion blur in post that will simulate a cinematic shutter speed - and you can add gradients etc to compensate for exposure - but using an ND filter while shooting is best and easiest really. We actually have videos on our channel about these topics too you can watch. We’d always suggest using the lowest ISO as possible, so go with the different shutter if needed and a lower ISO. Otherwise the footage can get noisy fast. We always strive to be around 1/48 if possible when shooting 24fps. But low light you’re not going to really have shutter issues and 1/24 can look okay especially in more static scenes. Hope that answers your questions.

Can that lens and anamorphic used in android?
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 5 лет назад
Yes. Just need to use a Beastgrip or similar style universal cage (or case) that will hold your phone and mount the lens.

Ha, yeah, well we’ve picked stuff up over time, not all at once - and it can definitely add up! The filters we use on our other traditional cameras too though. And those will last a while along with the lens adapters. All you really need here is the phone and an ND filter. :)

That whole price is the price for one good canon lens. I would rather the iphone route in a heartbeat. Way more flexibility

hey iPhoneographers, I have no idea why you upload this low resolution low bitrate 1080p with blocky compression artifacts all over everything. We can't even see the image quality for anything you are testing
@iphoneographers
@iphoneographers 6 лет назад
Hi, we don’t upload low bitrate. We typically do 30Mbps (YT recommends 8-12Mbps) for our HD uploads and 50Mbps for 4K.

hi iPhoneographers. I accidentally clicked on your videos many times but I never subscribed and I close the video quickly because the image which appears on my 4K display is a very low quality and blurry. It upsets me so much that I do not watch the video. I am not wondering about the bitrate of your upload, but the bitrate of the actual video we are allowed to watch on RU-vid, which has quality that is too low for my display. It is only 9.5 mbps VP9 and that is very bad. I do not want to watch 1080p anymore and it makes me feel depressed like we are stuck in the year 2012 or something. If you are putting in all that effort to upload a file that is 30 mbps, it does not make any sense why you would upload 1080p. 1080p is mainly for people who do not know what they are doing and just upload some random file without checking anything.

That is very strange. We watch RU-vid video on 4K TVs all the time and it upscales HD great. Looks really good. A lot like Blu-ray looks good on 4K TVs, too. Lots of people today including us shoot in 4K but then master and upload in HD. We occasionally will upload a 4K video, but we have found that the overwhelming majority of people don’t watch it in 4K. Editing and rendering and exporting in 4K is still a big challenge even on fast computers. Almost 70% of all RU-vid videos are consumed on smartphones or tablets, too. So while we definitely like 4K and work with, we don’t think it’s necessary at this stage to consistently upload it. Sorry you’re having issues with the video quality though…. We appreciate you trying to watch. :)

4K is no problem if you use DaVinci Resolve. You can set the preview resolution to 1080p and it will be fast while you are editing. The slow computer argument makes little sense. It only takes extra time during the render. It has never been a problem. Are you saying that you cannot even rise to the challenge of getting the most basic level of budget computer capable of editing 4K? I watch channels that are made by professionals like iPhoneDo, Jason Vong, Max Yuryev, Philip Bloom, Think Media, Peter Gregg, Matt Granger, Jared Polin, or Tony & Chelsea Northrup. Or even the 10th Parallel. Or even Peter McKinnon. And many, many others. Not a single one of them would actually be stupid enough to make 1080p videos in the year 2018 or attempt to run a channel in 1080p. Come on man, what is your problem? Are you just being lazy? Sorry, but I can't take you seriously because you don't even take your own channel seriously. It is not fun to watch 1080p and it does not feel happy or exciting. You are also telling me that you don't care about *individuals* actually watching the channel, you only care about lumping us into some 70% statistic or whatever -- Really insulting, I'm just some crappy number.

I fail to see any advantage of ND Filters and 'motion blur' for the extra $400 for a rig and lens, it seems utterly pointless!
