Supplies available at sponsor Jerry's Artarama! www.jerrysartarama.com/ Use coupon code: frugal20FS49 for 20% off $49 + Free Shipping (Excludes: Sale, Super Sale, Egift Cards, Buy It Try It’s and Vendor restricted items. Look for the green coupon eligible icon on the product listing.
Supplies:
QoR Watercolors (colors can be bought individually or in the 24 color set with many other useful colors I recommend) Neutral Tint, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Phthalo Blue (Green Shade), Nickel Azo Yellow www.jerrysartarama.com/qor-watercolor-sets
Brushes: You want soft brushes for the color glazing such as the mimic squirrel brushes in a variety of sizes: www.jerrysartarama.com/mimik-watercolor-brushes-synthetic-squirrel-high-performance
For the grisaille layer using neutral tin you can use whatever brushes you prefer. If you are not using QoR neutral tin be sure to test your "black" on the paper you plan to use for lifting as you want a standing color that is hard to lift. If you do not have a non lifting black watercolor use a non shellac waterproof black ink.
Important! You will also want a soft blunt round or filbert (aka mop brush) that will be used dry for blending and mottling color. Do not rinse this brush while we paint, it is to remain dry for the duration of the painting and then you can clean it. A mimik filbert will be good for this or any small soft mop you have.
Paper: I recommend the Aquabee #140 6"x9" cotton watercolor paper I usually use for tests or try the Fabriano Artistico 7"x10" test pack for $2.25 at jerry's www.jerrysartarama.com/fabriano-artistico-watercolor-small-sheet-packs because these paper will not lift as much as other more heavily sized paper. Plus it's a good deal!

Never heard of this technique, but the result is amazing. Personally, as a beginner, I always watch first and paint along later. Pausing where I don't go as fast as you. Also, I've read in several watercolor books, that monochrome painting is a good way to learn value. Also a way to practice value. I like your long vids.

The second half of the video is very much like photo tinting, which I did quite a lot of some years ago. Only with photo tinting, you don't have all the hard work of making the greyscale photo portion. Fantastic tutorial, Lindsay! Thanks!

I was sorry to miss the Live tutorial but enjoyed watching the replay last night. This is a new technique and something I would love to try when I get a bit more advanced. The end result is stunning, Lindsay, and one of your best IMHO. It really demonstrates your skill in capturing reflections, textures and realizism in your paintings. When we watch your quick and easy painting for us in the confines of a RU-vid video, it’s so easy to forget the full extent of your professional expertise! Wow!🤩

Hi Lindsay, you'll be pleased to know that the deep-aubergine-coloured things in your pic aren't past-their-prime grapes, they're Kalamata olives (& neither black nor green). They're a really popular variety here in Australia as they have a pleasant, milder flavour & they don't have that tough, rubbery texture either, like some other varieties of olive. :)
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 6 лет назад
those are my favorite olives for pizza too!
@gorschtown

Speaking of Australian produce, I think the green ones could be either limes or POSSIBLY Australian nashi pears. Nashi are usually brown like a brown pear & pear shaped like a pear shaped pear. But some Aussie nashi look just like that. Do you know who painted the original?

It’s interesting that I watched another similar technique today from RU-vidr watercolorist Rick Surowitz , showing how to get transparency (with a sheer curtain in a window and other local shadows) and he used a neutral background that he created with several colors. I’m still a beginner with watercolors & probably won’t be getting into this technique anytime soon, but thanks for demonstrating it. You always make everything look easy. 😊

I just got here in 2021 because I'm a watercolorist and I havenct worked dark to light since the mid eighties, using successively diluted india inks. Thanks for the. Real-time videos showing the actual decisions along the way instead of fast forwarding and skipping the explainations. I want to teach my students. You helped so much by explaining the tricky bits at the same moments I was struggling with the unfamiliar technique. It gave me some courage to try it. Plus, covid has me teaching online, and it is a new experience. Thanks again! (Greetings from Unity, Maine!)

Long videos, short videos, I watch them all. And I learn something new with every one. We studied a 17th century painter in school, (now I've forgotten his name, geesh!) and I wonder if he used this technique in his paintings. Most were very dark, or had dark backgrounds. I looked him up, Spanish painter, Diego Velazquez! Interesting portrait painter to the King of Spain, and other royalty.

Hi Lindsay, beautifully done! I use and love neutral tint by Daniel Smith. It was created to be a good low staining transparent and neutral tint that can be added to any pigment, even yellows, without changing the color of that pigment but only darkening the value. It is awesome. And the one person who commented about using with red to create a deep purple was likely using a pigment that contains blue because neutral tint is completely neutral, and contains no bluing like a Paynes gray would do.

What an interesting technique. I'm definitely going to try this one. I'm eyeing a perfume bottle in my window that has some interesting facets so the lights and darks are pronounced. Stunning, gorgeous painting, Lindsay! Greens in front of the pint size olive oil jar are called "colossal Spanish olives." (you can't see the red pimento at the ends of them in this photo). My Italian husband states that these are ALL olives: dark red, black & green. Whole Foods has a lovely olive bar. Thank you for such a happy and learned hour and a half! :) Fanna Turano Denver, CO 😂

I have just gotten serious enough about watercolor to buy a pro set. I just got a set of 24 Yarka pans. I haven't even had time to swatch then yet. I was talking this morning about replacing the neutral tint in there with a Payne's gray because I had no idea what neutral tint is used for.. Now I can see developing my watercolor style around it. I've never seen a black paint so perfectly black before. How did RU-vid know😉?

Looks beautiful as it is, if you didn’t show the one you spent hours on I wouldn’t of noticed this one didn’t have as much depth etc. I noticed the neutral did lift in one bit on the bottle but I think you went back in before it was dry. I have ordered neutral tint, think it’s being delivered tomorrow 😃 so I can give this one a try 👍
