Central Park, Garrett Mountain, bird migration. In this video, we use the Nikon Z6 II and the 300mm PF lens to capture birds. Like, take pictures...not imprison them.

Hey Omar, an focus tip that worked well for me with the Z6 when birds are in busy backgrounds is to use single-point, but also set the lens to "M/A" and use manual focus override. I find this is more consistent when the camera is having troubles focusing. Focus peaking works really well! I've also found DX mode is pretty helpful when you're just going to crop the image anyway. It's easier to see your focus peaking, and Single-Point AF works a little better. Good luck out there! It's a great time for birding!

The Osprey are very active here this time of year as the river temperature rises and the fish come in. Quite a challenge capturing them in flight and catching fish with my older camera (Nikon D7200) but we're having fun! When I was a kid (62 now) my best friend's uncle was a scout for the Baltimore Orioles. He used to bring us cracked bats from the Orioles practices. We played with them until we broke them the rest of the way. Good memories!

Gosh I appreciate your sense of humor. It's nice to learn while also having fun. 😊 I have a z6ii also but need to get a long lens for it. Still using my DSLR for that

As has been pointed out in busy backgrounds and small birds go with single point but set the lens to M/A and back button focus so if it still struggles you can manually adjust very quickly. For Birds in flight on my Z6ii I’ve found large area auto mode for works really well. Having upgraded firmware, again giving auto area 3 D another go and slightly better than before but still no better than 3 D tracking on my D500. Loved the video and great shots.

Using my Z6ii with the 200-500 f/5.6. I found it is good enough. Just lower my RAW to 12 bits high continuous I go with bird in flight!

Omar, I don’t know if you like old movies or not, but you should watch “Mr. Hobbs Takes A Vacation.” There’s a bird watching scene in it that I think you might enjoy (about 3/4 off the way through).

As a very novice bird watcher, you are damn good with your bird IDs, even recognizing their sounds! Hopefully soon, there will be a crop Nikon ML that is equivalent to the D500. The only ML adequate enough to capture Birds in flight is the Z9 (way beyond my budget), which is sad but true.

@@ogonzilla BTW, there was a Swedish birdphotographer who shot a lot with the Z6ii (until he got a Z9), so you can actually use the Z6ii for really advanced wildlife if you have the right skills: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jWi0Xoi3JhI.html

A cheap way of stablizing a long lens would maybe use an adjustable height monopod perhaps, may give you some advantage.

Create your own habitat in your backyard and let the birds come to you, although Omar comes off with it being a little whimsical it's a deeply passionate way to enjoy photography and a money pit for buying gear.

Nice video, but I suspect when people talk about the z6/z7 ability to do birding... they meant mostly BIF as to test the tracking and blackout of the EVF of the Z6/7 I and II. So yours is a nice relax complement to that more stressful way to try to capture BIFs.
@ogonzilla

I briefly spoke about birds in flight but it didn’t make the cut. I’m no expert BUT it seems the camera needs a clear sky or background to even have a chance. It’s easily distracted. Like me. 🤔

@@ogonzilla thanks for the reply. in my amateur attempts I have used a d850 and a z7. with the d850 3d tracking I get many half in focus... with the z7 is even worse but I blame my lack of ability to follow the bird when the screen is on and off blackout.

For shooting video with the Z6II and 300mm PF, did you turn on electronic image stabilization? It crops in a little bit (no bad thing with a telephoto lens) and I find it does help somewhat if I’m trying to just keep a steady frame. Not so good for panning. Also not totally sure about the final image quality vs. warp stabilizing in post. Fun video! I love your bird photography, the pigeon shot was beautiful with all the color and the setting, and I always feel like I learn a lot about the birds and birdwatching.

From the third party lenses I have, it's bad high contrast AF. Fails a ton! However it's good for controlled situation, portraits and landscape. I would assume using native Z lenses it's absolutely fine, but third party struggles.

I used to shoot birds with a 5D MKII! In principle, I am sure you can shoot birds with even a Fuji or a Lumix. That said, if it's the only thing you like shooting and you find yourself most often in difficult conditions, this is where you need a more capable and reliable autofocus system like what you see in the 2nd generation Canon mirrorless bodies, the current gen Sony bodies, or a Z9. Otherwise, you'll get super frustrated and hate your life!
