Control Slugs and Snails Using Oats
There are so many theories that proclaim they are the best way to deal with slugs and snails in the garden, but all seem to have drawbacks, for example DE needs to be dry so can't work on damp soils.
Slug and snails do like, and will eat oats or bran. In fact, this video shows just how much they will eat - they do not stop till full.
Once inside their system, the oats begin to absorb the slug or snail's moisture, expanding as it does so, until eventually the slugs body can not contain the swelling any longer and simply dies.
A simple but effective way to control these critters in our growing spaces.

I had never heard of using oats, thanks for sharing your knowledge. I will definitely add this to go along with my beer traps. I've been lucky this year with not having too much of a problem. Hope your growing season goes well.

Hedgehogs are the guardsmens' nightmare: they huff, puff and ruffle from 2-3 meters, just like a man from 10-15 meters :) That said, they should be a welcome co-inhabitant to any larger garden.

In the UK they are becoming rare to see. Gardens are enclosed so they can't move and habitat is not available. Here it is not the case. Most UK wildlife is less than it was 30 years ago

So interesting. We have quite a few hedgehogs around so I might encourage them into the garden with some hedgehog food and maybe a little hedgehog house too. New Sub Here!

that's a great idea. They do travel quite a distance so I make sure they can get in and out of our space and by providing him with a couple of sites to rest and plenty of access to water Spike seems quite happy. Great to have you join us, and do keep a look out for the community page to join in as and when you would like!

Just to point out that oats attract birds as well. Don't lay oats near seedlings or birds will step your seedlings to the ground.

Hi. It is a valid point but for me so far that hasn't been a problem so far as I do have that space and don't use large amounts. Birds do run around the seedlings and some of course land on seedlings. Having increased our biodiversity we now have a lot of different insects, which bring in birds. Another thing us Growers have to consider I guess. Once again thanks for your comments. Overall did you find the video useful?
