Used Linen White to paint a vintage sewing cabinet I bought at Goodwill. Turned out great. I sanded first and used about three coats sanding in-between. Looks wonderful. Glad I did it! I had some bleed thru yellowing so I sprayed some clear satin shellac and put another coat of paint on and it sealed it nice.
Thank you for this honest review! Your dresser looks like perfection! I, too, have a strange fascination with Rust-oleum paints, and I'm glad to hear the things you said about this particular chalk paint. :)
Thanks Traci, your dresser looks great! I'm so happy to see someone else likes Rustoleum Chalked paint. I love it too. I just finished 2 lamps using the Rustoleum Chalked spray paint. My lamps were as dark as your dresser and I changed them to white. I'd like to share that it took an entire can for the 2- 18" lamp bases even though I primed them first. But the results were worth it. I followed up with some Antique Gold Rub n Buff and I made some mistakes with the gold. I'd like everyone to know that I was able to remove my mistakes on the gold ( Rub n Buff) using acetone. -Surprise!!! the acetone didn't damage the Rustoleum Chalked paint at all. It held up great while I rubbed the gold off. I re-applied the gold without a problem. Kudos Rustoleum!
Thank you for the review on the chalked matte clear... I just ordered the spray version to go over a chalk paint on a dresser I just redid. I'll let you know if it worked as well as it did for you!!!
Been wanting to paint my dresser white and have been looking for a topcoat to cover my Hemnes dresser and your review has me sold on the clear!! I only wish I would have known that hemnes had a matching mirror!!!!! I’ve been searching high and low for one large enough to match the dresser. Just got the one I ordered from target delivered to me yesterday
Does the matte clear topcoat leave a yellow cast on the white? I'm getting ready to paint my upper kitchen cabinets a "whiteish" color and I am afraid it will look yellow. Thank you for this review by the way!
I like how your project turned out. Nice job. I have used Waverly chalk paint and top coat also. I had small projects that didn't require very much paint. I liked Waverly matte top coat. You just have top apply it in an area and move on to another area. It dries fast so going back into the same area will get sticky. I had to keep moving on to a new area and it worked out better. I think it works great for small projects. If I had a larger project I would use a quart size the same as you. Try it on a small project. I think you will like it better.
The Waverly is the only chalk paint I've ever used. It's thick, has great coverage and after sealing with a polyacrylic top coat I have absolutely no problem with chipping. I'm here because I was considering the Rustoleum chalk paint...just to try something different. Your review convinced me to stick with Waverly. HA! Great video/review. :-)
How was the top coat? Was it thin and is it water based? How does it look does it look really flat or a slight sheen? I'm asking bc I just bought the Rustoleum chalked clear coat but afraid to use it. Thanks for the help. I've used the Waverly paint it has great coverage. Yes the Waverly wax or top coat is aweful. It's runny and gives a yellow tint.
How did you apply the topcoat? I tried to put it on but it started to solve the chalk paint. I let the chalk paint dry overnight. Is that long enough? Please help.
I don't recommend chalked paint for kitchen stuff, I used the coat and I saw yellowing in some parts where the product accumulated. I painted some furniture in my bedroom linen white. Up close the color looks a bit yellowish, but from a distance it looks phenomenal white. ✋🏻
I used the Waverly White on the dresser and it came out really well until the Waverly Clear Wax turned my dresser yellow and I had to repainted 3 more coats. I haven't seal it yet. Researching which is the best.
J G Check out Home Depot’s Behr Chalk paint and their waxes. They’re fabulous. They have a paint chart for their chalk colors, but you can also choose from their vast color wall whatever color you want for your project. #tiredofanniesloancolors
Idk if you fixed your problem but I had the same thing happen to me after I bought my first vintage vanity w/seat and a stool. I restored it with Wavery Plaster which is an Antique white. I then tried the Wavery wax on the stool to see how it applied bc I've heard that it's different than regular wax. It's runny and not firm like a normal wax. So thank God I tried it on the stool first bc the next day I saw it had a yellowness to it. I did a thin coat and just painted over it again. I saved myself alot of heart ache that it sounds like you went threw by doing a small piece first. I since have done tons of reasearch and watched 100s of tutorials and learned that Dixie Belle, Jolie, Annie Sloan, wise Owl all have awesome waxs and wonderful water based top coats for chalk paint. Also they all have the best chalk paints in beatutiful colors. Wavery is nice too it has great coverage for the cost and is good to use for beginners or small pieces. I'm still working on my vintage vanity wanting to make it a masterpiece. I've since bought several vintage pieces of furniture I'm working on and found out alot more about using chalk paint, wax and top coats. I hope this helps best of luck.😊
Kimberly Alonso chalk paint adheres to anything so no need for sanding, the guy at Home Depot probably heard that and thinks it’s right, I never trust those people. You’re good you can chalk paint over anything as long as you seal the paint afterwards.
I recommend you get Painter’s Pyramid. They’re fabulous and incredibly strong. You can place them under each foot making it easier to paint. You’ll wonder how you ever lived without these things.
Oil-based top coats will yellow with time. When top coating a light painted service, use a water-based topcoat (polyacrylic) It will not yellow as the polyurethane (oil based) topcoats do. :-)
My project has turned into the project from h-ll! I sanded the paint, got it to where it looks nice, but the poly i used leaves streaky brush marks!!! Will never do this again using white paint....it shows EVERYTHING!
Althea Crown I am not a pro by any means but I would suggest applying a thinner coat to prevent this. As for how to fix, I would sand down and redo. Sorry! Best of luck to you!
Annie Sloan chalk paint can be used to paint leather, do you think that this product is essentially the same think as the Annie Sloan product? The price for this chalk paint is much better and I am thinking of using it to paint a retro leather chair and ottoman but wondering if I should just buy Annie Sloan product.. or do you think that Chalk paint is all basically the same and I could use this product to paint the leather?
This isn’t real chalk paint. It’s a cheap knock off. The whole thing with chalk paint is that it doesn’t require primer and you can paint with one coat and you seal the paint with the wax. You get what you pay for. Splurge and buy Annie Sloan chalk paint. It’s the only brand that truly does what it says ire I’ll do. Waverly chalk paint is just craft paint I’m convinced. Total junk. Tons of visible brush strokes.
Yes, Annie is the best, but it still requires two coats. Guys you can create a work of art with cheap paint, believe me. Lol...Be inspired and have fun with your projects.
